First Communion and baptism receptions are family celebrations for several dozen people, so their budgets are calculated much like a wedding budget, only on a smaller scale: food, priced per person, is the largest expense, while the rest consists of several fixed items such as the cake, photography and decorations. A note in the interests of transparency: the index does not include separate price lists for a “First Communion menu” or “baptism reception”. The closest data we have is the price of a set menu for a special occasion reception at a venue: a median of 280 PLN/person, typically 200 ‑ 350 PLN/person. This rate comes from wedding price lists covering several courses, a cold buffet and drinks throughout the night. A First Communion lunch or baptism reception usually lasts a few hours in the afternoon and includes soup, a main course, dessert, coffee and cake. Restaurants often offer shorter menus for these occasions, so the actual price per person may be closer to the lower end of the range than to the median.

The lower end covers a cold buffet and snacks collected in person, while the upper end covers hot meals with waiting staff. When arranging catering, remember the items included in the price at a restaurant: crockery, tablecloths, food warmers and cleaning.

If there is not enough room at home, you can hire a function room. function room hire usually costs 170 PLN/h, so a five-hour reception costs about PLN 850. Full-day hire costs about PLN 675, and venues also usually charge a refundable deposit.

The table shows prices in different units: per person, per hour, as a total or per item. They cannot simply be added together, so the best way to calculate the budget is to multiply the number of guests by the rate per person, then add each fixed item you actually need separately.

How much do a baptism and baptism reception cost?

The cost of the baptism ceremony itself is a voluntary donation to the parish. There is no official price list, and customs vary between parishes and regions, so we do not give an amount here. The simplest approach is to ask at the parish office. If the baptism is taking place outside your parish of residence, also ask whether you need permission from your parish priest.

A baptism reception is usually smaller and shorter than a First Communion reception, attended by close family and godparents and consisting of lunch and cake. The per-person rates are the same as above, so a reception for 20 guests at a venue costs about PLN 5,600, or about PLN 1,600 with catering. Baptism receptions are held at home more often than First Communion receptions because it is easier for a baby to nap and rest there. In that case, catering or simply a cake from a bakery is enough.

How much does a cake for a First Communion or baptism cost?

We do not have a separate price for First Communion cakes, but bakeries charge for cakes by the portion or kilogram, making it easy to calculate the cost for any occasion. A portion of cake usually costs about PLN 19, and a kilogram about 180 PLN/kg. For 30 guests, simply calculate the price of 30 portions instead of paying for a wedding cake for 100 people, which costs PLN 2,650. Figurines, sugar-paste lettering and tiered designs increase the price, usually more than the choice of flavour.

How much do a photographer and First Communion photo shoot cost?

During a First Communion ceremony at a church, photographs are often taken by a photographer appointed by the parish, with parents ordering the pictures through the parents’ committee. We do not collect these prices. However, we do have prices for photo shoots, which many families arrange separately outdoors or in a studio: a family or portrait photo shoot usually costs PLN 600, typically PLN 550 ‑ 750. The package normally includes a specified number of retouched photographs, with each additional photograph charged separately.

If you want a photographic report of the ceremony and reception, the closest benchmark is a short wedding report covering only the civil ceremony: about PLN 2,000. A full wedding report at PLN 4,500 is on a completely different scale because it covers the entire day.

How much do decorations and entertainment for a First Communion reception cost?

A popular balloon backdrop usually consists of several dozen balloons. Filling one latex balloon with helium costs about PLN 9.50, so 30 balloons cost about PLN 290. A large foil number or letter costs about PLN 64 per item. Latex balloons without sealing gel stay afloat for only several hours, so order them for the day of the reception.

How can you avoid overpaying for a First Communion or baptism reception?

• Ask for a special occasion menu, not a wedding menu. Restaurants offer shorter lunch menus for First Communion and baptism receptions, usually at a lower price than a wedding set menu.
• Ask about children’s prices. Children’s portions may be cheaper, and venues sometimes do not charge anything for the youngest children.
• Book early. On Saturdays and Sundays in May, venues near churches are often fully booked well in advance.
• Compare like for like. For catering, check whether crockery, delivery, service and cleaning are included in the price. At a venue, check whether there are corkage charges for bringing your own alcohol or fees for bringing your own cake.
