How much does a divorce cost in 2026? Court fee, lawyer and prices by city
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
An uncontested divorce handled by a lawyer most often costs around PLN 4,700 in Poland, typically several thousand PLN within the range PLN 2,350 ‑ 5,500. A contested divorce involving a finding of fault costs around PLN 6,500.

The cost of a divorce is not a single amount, but the sum of three elements: the court fee, the lawyer’s fees and additional expenses such as expert opinions or mediation. The most important factor is whether the spouses agree. Below, we compare the costs stated in law firm price lists and legal guides collected in our price index.
How much does an uncontested divorce cost?
This is the cheapest and quickest route. The median figure from price lists and guides that include both fees and the lawyer’s remuneration is PLN 4,700. Half of the sources fall within the range PLN 2,350 ‑ 5,500, while the cheapest offer we found starts at PLN 1,500. The most expensive source quotes PLN 10,000, but this applies to cases involving children and longer proceedings.
The court fee for filing for divorce is fixed by law: PLN 600. If the court grants a divorce without assigning fault following a joint request, part of the fee is refunded. The remaining cost covers the lawyer’s work: preparing the petition, consultations and attending the hearing.
| Divorce (court and solicitor's fees): option | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic service | PLN 4,700 | PLN 2,350 ‑ 5,500 | 13 |
| Court fee for filing a claim only (without a lawyer) | PLN 600 | PLN 600 | 2 |
| Fault-based divorce | PLN 6,500 | PLN 6,000 ‑ 7,650 | 4 |

How much does a divorce involving a finding of fault cost?
A fault-based case is considerably more expensive because it takes longer, with more hearings, witnesses and court submissions, and sometimes expert witnesses. Law firms most often price it at around PLN 6,500. In practice, the amount increases with each subsequent hearing, which is why many firms charge a separate fee for every court appearance.
Before seeking a finding of fault, it is worth considering what you will actually gain. Sometimes the difference in cost and time outweighs the benefit of the judgment.
How much does a lawyer charge for a divorce case?
Lawyers’ fees vary considerably, depending on the city, the firm’s experience and the scope of work. For one-off representation in court proceedings, law firms quote a median of PLN 625, while an initial consultation usually costs around PLN 325. A lawyer most often charges around PLN 4,000 to handle an entire uncontested divorce case and around PLN 6,000 for a case involving a finding of fault.
Ask the law firm whether the price is a fixed fee for the entire case or whether each hearing is charged separately. In a fault-based case, this distinction can double the bill.

Divorce (court and solicitor's fees): cities from cheapest to most expensive. Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
The differences mainly reflect what the price includes: some law firms quote a fixed fee for the entire case, while others cover only the petition and the first hearing. When comparing offers, always ask the same question: how much will the entire case cost through to the final judgment?
Who pays for the divorce?
The person filing the petition pays the filing fee. Each party pays their own lawyer unless the court decides otherwise when assigning fault. In that case, the party found at fault may be ordered to pay the other party’s legal costs. In a divorce without a finding of fault, the court usually orders each party to bear their own costs.
If you cannot afford the fee or a lawyer, you can apply for an exemption from court costs and for a court-appointed lawyer. The court assesses the application based on a declaration of your family circumstances, assets and income.
How long does a case take and why does this affect the price?
An uncontested divorce without children can be concluded at the first hearing. A fault-based case involving children and a property dispute may take more than a year. The number of hearings is the main factor affecting the cost: a law firm that charges for each court appearance will issue several invoices in a lengthy case. When choosing a lawyer, therefore, ask what will happen to the price if the case takes longer than expected.
What increases the cost of a divorce?
- Children under 18. The court must decide on parental responsibility, contact and child maintenance. If there is no agreement, an expert opinion will also be required.
- Division of property. This is a separate case with a separate court fee, often involving an expert valuer.
- Number of hearings. Every additional hearing takes up the lawyer’s time.
- Expert opinions. They are paid for by the party requesting the opinion, or split equally between both parties.
How can you reduce the cost of a divorce?
An uncontested divorce is the cheapest option: the spouses agree on matters concerning their children and do not dispute fault. Mediation can help and costs around PLN 225 per session. It often leads to an agreement that the court only needs to approve. It is also worth asking two or three law firms for a written quote covering the entire case.
