At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- Trouser shortening by a tailor usually costs PLN 23 ‑ 43, while the median from tailoring workshop price lists is PLN 38.
- The cheapest machine trouser shortening starts at PLN 10, while careful shortening of suit trousers costs up to PLN 60.
- A basic alteration, such as taking in trousers, costs around PLN 50.
- Altering a blazer or jacket costs around PLN 105, several times more than shortening trousers.
- Replacing a jacket zip at a tailor's costs around PLN 61, excluding the price of the zip itself.

Trouser shortening is the most common service at a tailoring workshop and one of the cheapest. Even so, prices in price lists vary severalfold: at one workshop, you will pay the price of a coffee to have jeans shortened, while another may charge several times more. The difference depends on the type of trousers, the finishing method and the city. We collected medians from tailors’ price lists and compared shortening with other alterations.
How much does a tailor charge to shorten trousers?
A tailor most often charges PLN 38 per pair to shorten trousers, and half of the price lists fall within the PLN 23 ‑ 43 range, based on 5 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. The price covers shortening and hemming both legs. It does not include an express-service surcharge or pressing the entire pair of trousers.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shortening trousers | PLN 38 | PLN 23 ‑ 43 | 5 |
| Clothing alterations | PLN 50 | PLN 50 ‑ 53 | 5 |
| Jacket zip replacement | PLN 61 | PLN 55 ‑ 63 | 3 |
| Shoe repair (cobbler) | PLN 45 | PLN 35 ‑ 52 | 4 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
The lowest rates, starting at PLN 10, are for simple machine shortening at small workshops. The highest, up to PLN 60, apply to fabric trousers shortened carefully with hand hemming at workshops in large cities.
How much does it cost to shorten jeans?
Shortening jeans usually costs about the median for all trousers, around PLN 38, if the tailor makes a standard hem with new stitching. Shortening them while retaining the original hem costs more. The tailor cuts the leg above the factory hem and sews it back on, so the jeans look new, with their distressed edge and original thread. This requires more work, so the price approaches the upper end of the PLN 23 ‑ 43 range.
With jeans, it is worth telling the tailor exactly which method you want. A standard hem can be identified by the different thread and stiffer edge.
How much does it cost to shorten suit trousers?
Shortening suit trousers usually costs more than shortening jeans or tracksuit bottoms, towards the upper end of the PLN 23 ‑ 43 range, while the most expensive price lists charge up to PLN 60. Suit trousers are often hemmed by hand with a blind stitch so that the seam is not visible from the outside. The crease also needs to be pressed properly. If the trousers have turn-ups, retaining them when shortening costs extra.
Before a wedding, school-leaving ball or First Communion, take the trousers in with the shoes you will wear. The leg length depends on the heel height. We cover other celebration expenses in the article how much does a wedding cost.
How much does it cost to shorten tracksuit bottoms and fabric trousers?
Shortening tracksuit bottoms usually costs less than the median of PLN 38, as knitted fabric is quick to sew and the hem does not need such careful finishing. It costs more if the bottoms have cuffs at the ankles: the tailor must unpick them, shorten the legs and sew the cuffs back on.
Fabric trousers, meaning smart, unlined woven trousers, are the reference point for our median. Shortening them usually costs PLN 23 ‑ 43.
| Type of trousers | Position within the range | What increases the price |
|---|---|---|
| Tracksuit bottoms without cuffs | below the median of PLN 38 | very little |
| Tracksuit bottoms with cuffs | around the median of PLN 38 | reattaching the cuffs |
| Fabric trousers | PLN 23 ‑ 43 | hand hemming |
| Jeans, standard hem | around the median of PLN 38 | thick fabric |
| Jeans with the original hem | upper end of the range | reattaching the factory hem |
| Suit trousers with turn-ups | up to PLN 60 | turn-ups, crease, hand stitching |
How long does it take to shorten trousers?
Shortening trousers usually takes a tailor from several minutes to an hour of work, but collection from the workshop most often takes one to several days, depending on the queue. Waiting times increase before holidays, First Communions and during the wedding season. An express service, for example within 24 hours, costs more than the standard PLN 38.
Is it worth shortening trousers yourself?
Shortening trousers yourself is worthwhile only for simple tracksuit bottoms or work trousers, as a tailor usually charges PLN 23 ‑ 43 for this service, which is little compared with the price of new trousers. To shorten them at home, you need a sewing machine capable of handling thick fabric and thread matching the fabric colour. Iron-on hemming tape is a short-term solution and usually comes loose after several washes.
For jeans, suit trousers and expensive trousers made from good-quality fabric, it is better to take them to a workshop. A single uneven seam or a leg cut too short is an irreversible loss, while correcting an amateur shortening job can cost more than the shortening itself.
Is tailoring cost-effective for the customer?
An alteration by a tailor is worthwhile when the trousers fit well at the waist and hips and only the legs are too long. Shortening for around PLN 38 can make trousers bought from a chain store look made to measure. For comparison, the median for a made-to-measure suit is PLN 6,000, so adjusting a ready-made garment is many times cheaper.
What determines the price of trouser shortening?
The price of trouser shortening depends primarily on the fabric and finishing method. The price lists indicate five factors:
- Type of trousers and fabric. Jeans, fabric trousers and tracksuit bottoms are listed separately in price lists.
- Finishing method. Retaining the original hem or turn-ups costs more than a standard hem.
- Sewing method. Machine shortening is cheaper than hand hemming.
- City. Prices can be higher in larger cities, while workshops in city centres charge more than those in residential neighbourhoods.
- Turnaround time. Express service increases the price.
How much do other alterations cost?
A basic alteration, such as taking in trousers at the side seams, costs around PLN 50 (typically PLN 50 ‑ 53). Trouser shortening is therefore one of the cheapest services on a price list. Alterations to outerwear cost considerably more because these garments have linings and more layers of fabric.
| Clothing alterations: option | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic service | PLN 50 | PLN 50 ‑ 53 | 5 |
| alteration of a blazer or jacket | PLN 105 | PLN 105 | 1 |
| alteration of a coat or jacket | PLN 125 | PLN 125 | 1 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
Replacing a jacket zip costs around PLN 61, excluding the price of the zip itself, or around PLN 180 for a long, lined winter jacket. You can find details on the clothing alterations and jacket zip replacement pages.
How can you avoid overpaying at a tailor’s?
- Take in several items at once. Some workshops offer a discount for a larger order, and you save on travel.
- Mark the length at the workshop. Try on the trousers there with the shoes you will wear with them. A correction after an incorrect measurement means another bill.
- Ask about the method. For jeans and suit trousers, ask whether the price covers a standard hem or finishing that retains the original hem or turn-ups.
- Do not pay for express service unnecessarily. If you need the trousers in a week, the standard turnaround time will be sufficient.
- Check the price list before placing an order. Most workshops display one on the door or online, and there are substantial differences between workshops in the same city.
If you also want to have your shoes repaired, a basic repair by a cobbler costs around PLN 45. You can find more prices for craft services in the crafts and furniture category. We do not yet have local medians for trouser shortening in individual cities, so we provide the national median.
