Replacing a zip in a long, lined winter jacket costs around PLN 180 according to price lists, excluding the cost of the zip itself. This is several times more than for a lightweight jacket, for which the median is PLN 61. The difference reflects the work involved: the lining of a winter jacket must be unpicked, the insulation handled carefully and several layers of fabric sewn through.

How much does replacing a jacket zip cost?

Having a zip replaced in an ordinary jacket most often costs PLN 61 at a tailor’s, while half of the price lists fall within PLN 55 ‑ 63, according to 3 workshops collected by indekscen.pl. The amount covers removing the old zip and sewing in the new one. The cheapest offers start at PLN 50, while the most expensive reach PLN 65.

Jackets almost always use an open-ended zip, which separates into two parts. Longer jackets and parkas often have a two-way zip that can also be opened from the bottom. This type of zip is more expensive and harder to match, so it is worth bringing the jacket in and choosing the zip at the workshop.

How much does replacing a zip in a down jacket cost?

Replacing a zip in a down jacket usually costs more than the median for lightweight jackets (PLN 61), and is closer to the price for winter jackets, around PLN 180. Down can escape through every needle hole, and the quilting must be stitched so that the chambers do not come apart. Some workshops do not accept down jackets at all or only provide a quote after inspecting them.

How much does replacing a zip in a leather jacket cost?

Replacing a zip in a leather jacket is usually more expensive than in a fabric jacket because leather leaves no room for error: every needle hole is permanent. The tailor must follow the existing stitch holes and use a special needle, and often a leather sewing machine as well. We do not have a separate median for leather jackets, so we use the price for a winter jacket as a reference, around PLN 180.

Not every tailoring workshop works with leather. It is better to take a leather jacket to a workshop that lists this service in its price list, rather than to the nearest alterations tailor.

Is it worth replacing a jacket zip?

Replacing a jacket zip is almost always worthwhile when the jacket is in good condition: labour at PLN 61 is usually a fraction of the price of a new jacket. The calculation is different for cheap, worn jackets, especially a winter version costing around PLN 180 to repair.

Before deciding, check what has actually broken:

1. The zip comes apart, but the teeth are intact. A new slider is usually enough and costs less than replacing the entire zip.
2. Broken teeth or torn zip tape. The entire zip needs to be replaced.
3. Broken slider pull. It can often be replaced without changing the zip.
4. The zip has come away from the fabric. Reseaming may be enough, without fitting a new zip.

How do you choose a new zip for a jacket?

A new jacket zip is selected by its length, tooth size and type, and its price is added to the labour cost, which is usually PLN 55 ‑ 63. Consider the following:

• Length. Measure the zip from the top to the bottom edge of the toothed tape. A tailor can shorten a zip that is too long, but cannot lengthen one that is too short.
• Tooth size. Winter jackets usually have heavier zips, either coil zips or plastic zips with large teeth, than lightweight windbreakers. A fine zip in a heavy jacket will quickly come apart.
• Open-ended or two-way. The zip must be the same type as the original, otherwise the jacket will not fasten properly.
• Colour. For light-coloured jackets, matching the colour of the tape matters; for dark jackets, black is usually sufficient.

The simplest option is to let the workshop choose the zip: the tailor will know the available sizes and immediately check whether the zip suits the jacket.

Is replacing a jacket zip more expensive in a large city?

Replacing a jacket zip in large cities such as Kraków, Wrocław or Katowice can be more expensive than in smaller localities, but the differences are not large for such a straightforward service. We do not yet have separate city medians for this service, so we give the nationwide range, PLN 55 ‑ 63. In a large city, however, it is easier to find a workshop that works with leather or accepts down jackets.

How much does a locksmith charge to replace a lock?

A locksmith replaces locks in doors, not zips in clothing, and usually charges PLN 150 ‑ 255, excluding the price of the lock cylinder. This is a completely different service from replacing a jacket zip, which is done by a tailor.
