Excavator operator qualifications are among the most popular vocational qualifications for people who want to work in construction, road building or a company carrying out excavation and utility connection work. Most training centres publish their course prices, but the offers are difficult to compare: some quote a price including the exam, others without it, and some cover Class III while others cover Class I. We have collected training centre price lists and broken down the total cost of obtaining the qualification.

How much does an excavator course cost?

According to 6 training centre price lists collected by indekscen.pl, a hydraulic excavator course most often costs PLN 2,200, with half of the offers falling within the PLN 2,000 ‑ 2,500 range. The cheapest courses start at PLN 1,600, while the most expensive cost up to PLN 2,700. All sources and quotations are available on the excavator operator course page.

The course price usually includes theoretical instruction, practical training on a machine and training materials. It usually does not include the medical examination, and the exam fee may be charged separately: in one price list, this adds several hundred PLN to the course price.

How much do Class 3 and Class 1 excavator courses cost?

A Class III excavator course usually costs an amount in the lower or middle part of the PLN 2,000 ‑ 2,500 range, while a Class I course is more expensive and costs up to PLN 2,700 in our sources. Some training centres charge the same price for both classes because the main difference in the programme is the number of practical training hours on larger machines.

Prices also vary by region: a course may be more expensive in large cities and at centres with their own training ground, and cheaper in smaller localities. A cheaper course is not necessarily worse, but check how many hours you will spend in the cab, as this affects both your practical exam result and your confidence in your first job.

What is the difference between excavator Class 1 and 3?

Class III qualifies you to operate smaller hydraulic excavators, including mini excavators and standard wheeled excavators, while Class I covers all hydraulic excavators without size restrictions. Class I is therefore required for large tracked excavators used in road construction, aggregate mines and large-scale earthworks. It is worth checking the precise scope of each class with the training centre, as it depends on the machine’s weight and type.

If you intend to work mainly on utility connections, gardens and detached house construction, Class III is usually sufficient. Anyone aiming to work for large infrastructure companies will benefit from obtaining the higher class straight away.

Excavator or backhoe loader course?

A backhoe loader course is a separate specialisation because the machine combines an excavator bucket at the rear with a loader at the front, and a hydraulic excavator qualification does not cover it. Many centres offer both courses together or one after the other, with a discount for the package. Use the price of an excavator-only course, usually PLN 2,000 ‑ 2,500, as a reference: a package covering two specialisations costs more, but less than two separate courses.

Backhoe loaders are used on small construction sites, municipal roads and by municipal service companies, so operators can be even more sought after in the local labour market than operators of large tracked excavators.

What are the requirements for an excavator course?

Excavator operator courses usually accept adults who have completed at least primary education and have no medical contraindications to operating machinery. A medical certificate is issued by an occupational health doctor, and the examination usually costs PLN 125 ‑ 250. A driving licence is not required for the course itself, but it is useful at work when the machine needs to be moved along a public road.

How long does an excavator course take?

An excavator course usually lasts from around two weeks to several weeks, depending on the class and study format. A weekend course for working people takes longer in calendar terms than a weekday course, while a Class I course includes more practical training hours than a Class III course. You must also allow for the wait until the exam date, as training centres usually arrange exams every few weeks.

What does the excavator exam involve?

The excavator operator exam consists of theoretical and practical sections and is taken before an examination board. Qualifications for construction machinery, including excavators, are issued by the Institute of Mechanised Construction and Rock Mining (IMBiGS). After passing the exam, the operator receives a qualification certificate and an operator’s logbook.

The exam process step by step:

  1. Registration by the training centre after completing the course and obtaining a valid medical examination.
  2. Theoretical section: machine construction, daily maintenance, occupational health and safety regulations, and rules for working around excavations and utility networks.
  3. Practical section: preparing the excavator for work, digging a trench or completing a task with the bucket, and safely finishing work.
  4. Issue of documents: a qualification certificate and an operator’s logbook in which employers record hours worked.

How much does an excavator course cost with the medical examination and exam?

The total cost of obtaining the qualification consists of the course price, usually PLN 2,000 ‑ 2,500, plus the medical examination and possibly the exam fee if it is not included. An occupational health examination usually costs PLN 125 ‑ 250, with a median of PLN 195. Below is a comparison of an excavator course with other vocational courses in our index:

forklift course is several times cheaper, with a median price of PLN 625, but it qualifies you to work in a warehouse rather than on a construction site. Is an excavator course difficult?

An excavator course is not difficult for someone with basic manual dexterity and spatial awareness, and the theory covers material that can be learnt over a few evenings. The most challenging part is smoothly operating several levers at once, coordinating the movements of the boom, arm and bucket. This can only be learnt through practice, so when choosing a training centre, ask how many hours you will spend on the machine, not just about the price.

How much can you earn as an excavator operator?

We do not collect operator salary data because our index covers service prices, not wages. The rate companies charge customers provides a useful point of reference: an hour of excavator work with an operator usually costs 155 ‑ 220 PLN/h, while an operator’s labour without the machine costs around 115 PLN/h in one price list. The company must also cover the machine, fuel and transport from this amount, so the operator’s pay is lower than the rate charged to the customer.

How to choose a training centre and avoid overpaying

  • Ask about the total price: the course, exam, issue of documents and medical examination.
  • Check the number of practical training hours and which machine is used for the lessons.
  • Compare qualification classes: sometimes the surcharge for Class I is small.
  • Ask about exam dates so you do not have to wait weeks for your qualification.
  • Check for funding from the labour office or your employer before paying out of your own pocket.

You can find prices for other courses and training in the education and courses category, and driving licence costs in our article on how much a driving licence costs.
