Is hiring an excavator worthwhile?
Hiring an excavator with an operator is almost always worthwhile when earthworks take from a few hours to a few days. An experienced operator can excavate as much in an hour as several people with spades can in a day, without damaging utility lines. Buying your own mini excavator only makes sense for construction companies and people who excavate regularly.
Which option to choose:
- A few hours of work, such as a trench for a utility connection or an excavation for a septic tank: a mini excavator with an operator.
- Several days of work on your own plot and you have the required licence: daily hire without an operator.
- A large excavation for a house or basement: an excavator or backhoe loader with an operator, as a smaller machine would take too long.
- A narrow access route, garden or work beside a house: a mini excavator, as it fits where a large machine cannot enter and will not damage the lawn.
How much does an excavator with an operator cost per hour?
An excavator or backhoe loader with an operator most commonly costs 205 PLN/h per hour, according to 7 price lists, while the typical range is 155 ‑ 220 PLN/h. This is only slightly more than a mini excavator, while a larger machine excavates faster and can load soil onto a tipper truck.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini excavator hire with operator | 175 PLN/h | 150 ‑ 195 PLN/h | 3 |
| Excavator or backhoe loader hire with operator | 205 PLN/h | 155 ‑ 220 PLN/h | 7 |
| Compactor plate hire | 130 PLN/day | 100 ‑ 175 PLN/day | 7 |
| Land levelling | 12 PLN/m² | 8.50 ‑ 15 PLN/m² | 4 |

The difference in the hourly rate between a mini excavator and excavator or backhoe loader hire with operator is small, so the number of hours is what matters most for large excavations. A larger machine will complete the same work faster, but costs more to transport and needs room to manoeuvre.
How much can an excavator dig per hour?
A mini excavator usually excavates between a few and a dozen or so cubic metres of soil per hour, depending on the size of the machine and bucket, and the type of ground. Work progresses quickly in sand, but much more slowly in clay, stony ground and soil containing roots. Excavating near existing pipes and cables is also slower because the operator must take extra care.
This is why companies rarely quote a price per metre of excavation. Instead, ask the operator how many hours a specific job will take and multiply this by the rate. For example, four hours with a mini excavator and operator costs about PLN 700, while eight hours costs about PLN 1,400.
What is a mini excavator most commonly hired for and how much does it cost?

What determines the cost of hiring a mini excavator?
The cost of hiring a mini excavator depends primarily on the region and whether you hire the machine with an operator. Prices are highest in Warsaw and other large cities, and lowest in rural areas. Other factors found in price lists include:
- Hire period. The hourly or daily rate is lower for longer hire periods.
- Machine transport. Delivering a mini excavator on a trailer is charged separately, depending on the distance.
- Machine size and attachments. A hydraulic breaker or specialist buckets cost extra.
- Minimum working time. Companies charge for at least several hours on short jobs.
- Net or gross price. Some companies quote prices excluding VAT.
We do not yet publish mini excavator hire prices for individual cities because we have too few local price lists.
How should you prepare your plot before the mini excavator arrives?
A well-prepared plot can reduce the mini excavator’s working time by several hours, producing real savings when you pay an hourly rate. The operator charges from the time of arrival, so every break spent looking for pipes or moving cars costs money.
- Mark out the excavation area with stakes or spray paint, preferably using the design or planning map.
- Check the location of utility lines: water, electricity, gas, sewerage and telecommunications cables. A base map or surveyor can help.
- Provide access for the trailer and space to unload the machine, removing cars, trailers and materials from the route.
- Decide where the soil will go: into a pile on the plot, back into the excavation or directly for removal.
- Agree access with your neighbours if you need to enter via a shared road.
How can you avoid overpaying for a mini excavator?
- Describe the job precisely: the excavation dimensions, type of ground and access. The operator can estimate the number of hours.
- Ask about transport and minimum hours, as these determine the bill for a small job.
- Combine jobs. If the machine is already on the plot, complete the trench for the utility connection, drainage and levelling in one visit.
- Mark the route of utility lines. Repairing a damaged pipe or cable is a cost usually borne by the customer.
- Compare net prices with net prices, and gross prices with gross prices.
