At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- Grinding one stump up to approximately 50 cm in diameter usually costs PLN 115 ‑ 175, while the median from company price lists is PLN 140.
- Companies that charge for stump grinding by machine operating time ask approximately 400 PLN/h.
- According to the median, grinding five medium-sized stumps costs approximately PLN 700, and usually less with a discount for a larger job.
- Felling a medium-sized tree usually costs PLN 500 ‑ 855 and most price lists do not include stump grinding.
- Removing a stump with a mini excavator and operator costs approximately 175 PLN/h per machine hour.

A stump left after a tree has been felled gets in the way when mowing, takes up space intended for a lawn or patio and can continue producing shoots for years. Grinding is the quickest way to remove it without digging up the garden. Below, we compare stump grinding prices from public price lists published by gardening companies, provide an example for several stumps and compare grinding with other methods.
How much does stump grinding cost per stump?
Stump grinding most often costs PLN 140 per stump, according to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. This applies to a stump up to approximately 40 to 50 cm in diameter, such as a typical fruit tree or medium-sized birch. Half of the price lists fall within the range of PLN 115 ‑ 175, the cheapest offers start at PLN 100, while the most expensive, for large stumps made of hard wood, reach PLN 300. Details and quotations from the price lists are available at stump grinding.
The price covers grinding the stump to several or more centimetres below ground level. It usually excludes the removal of wood chips and lateral roots extending away from the stump.
How do stump grinding prices vary by diameter?
For most companies, stump grinding prices depend on the diameter measured at ground level. Some companies use size bands (for example, up to 30 cm, from 30 to 39 cm and from 40 to 50 cm), others charge a fixed amount for every centimetre of diameter, while some charge by the machine hour.
| Pricing method | When it is used | Price according to price lists |
|---|---|---|
| Per stump, up to approximately 50 cm | individual stumps in a garden | PLN 115 ‑ 175 |
| Per large stump made of hard wood | oaks, old fruit trees, wide stump bases | at the upper end of the price list, up to PLN 300 |
| Per grinder operating hour | multiple stumps or unusual conditions | approximately 400 PLN/h |
One price list states that grinding a stump measuring 31 to 50 cm in diameter takes 30 to 50 minutes. With an hourly rate of 400 PLN/h, it is therefore usually more cost-effective to have several stumps ground at once, as the travel and machine set-up costs are spread across multiple stumps.
How much does grinding several stumps cost? An example
According to the median, grinding five medium-sized stumps costs approximately PLN 700, typically PLN 580 ‑ 880. For three stumps, the cost is approximately PLN 420. Companies often offer a discount when several stumps are included in one job, so the actual price may be lower than the simple total.
An example of clearing a plot after tree felling:
- Tree felling: tree felling for a medium-sized tree has a median price of PLN 605 per tree.
- Stump grinding: approximately PLN 140 per stump.
- Removal of wood chips and branches: usually charged separately, ask for it to be included in the quote.
- Ground levelling: land levelling usually costs 8.50 ‑ 15 PLN/m².
- New lawn where the stumps were: laying a lawn from seed costs approximately 21 PLN/m².

What affects the price of stump grinding?
The price of stump grinding primarily depends on its diameter, followed by the hardness of the wood and access to the work area. The quote is affected by:
- Stump diameter. The wider the stump, the longer the grinder has to work.
- Type of wood. Oak, hornbeam and acacia take longer to grind than spruce or poplar.
- Grinding depth. A few centimetres below ground level is sufficient for a lawn, but the grinder must go deeper for a patio foundation or to plant a tree.
- Access. A stump behind a narrow gate, on a slope or right next to a wall requires a smaller machine or more manual work.
- Number of stumps. Including several stumps in one job reduces the price per stump.
How can you remove tree stumps quickly?
Grinding is the quickest way to remove a stump: a medium-sized stump can be removed in less than an hour and the cost is usually PLN 115 ‑ 175. Another quick method is grubbing, which involves pulling out the stump and its roots with an excavator. This work is usually charged by the hour: mini excavator hire with operator costs approximately 175 PLN/h, but grubbing leaves a large hole and disturbed ground that must then be filled and levelled. We cover mini excavator rates in the article mini excavator hourly rate: price.

Grinding is chosen when the area is to be used for a lawn, flower bed or paving. Grubbing is suitable when the main roots must also be removed, for example for a foundation, or when the ground is already being excavated for construction work.
How can you remove a root without digging it up?
A root can be removed without digging by grinding, which reduces the stump and the main roots nearby to small chips, down to several or more centimetres below ground level. Lateral roots extending further away are usually left in the ground and decompose naturally over time. If they produce shoots, these must be pruned regularly or additional grinding must be arranged in those areas.
Chemical methods, using products that accelerate wood decomposition, work slowly, taking between one and several years. Use them according to the manufacturer’s instructions and away from vegetable gardens, wells and ponds.
Stump grinding: what is it and how is it done?
Stump grinding is the mechanical reduction of a stump into small chips using a specialised machine with a cutting wheel fitted with hard teeth. The operator positions the grinder beside the stump and moves the rotating wheel from side to side, gradually cutting deeper until the stump is several or more centimetres below ground level. Small grinders fit through a standard garden gate, while large tracked machines can handle stumps with a large diameter.
After grinding, a shallow depression filled with wood chips mixed with soil remains where the stump stood. If grass is to be grown there, the chips must be removed because they draw nitrogen from the soil as they decompose, causing poor grass growth. The hole is filled with soil and compacted, then grass is sown or turf is laid. When several stumps are being removed, it is worth arranging for the entire section of the garden to be levelled at the same time. We cover turf prices in the article turf: price per m².
When is the best time to grind stumps?
Stumps can be ground throughout the year, provided the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged, as heavy machinery can damage the lawn in such conditions. It is best to do it immediately after felling, before the stump produces shoots and before anything new is planted in the area.

How can you avoid overpaying for stump grinding?
- Measure the stump diameters before requesting a quote and send the company photographs so that you receive a fixed price per stump rather than a price ‘from’.
- Include all stumps in one job, including your neighbours’ stumps, as travel and machine set-up are charged only once.
- Ask what the price includes: grinding depth, clearing the chips, removal and filling the hole with soil.
- Arrange stump grinding together with tree felling. Companies that provide both services often offer a lower combined price.
Many online price lists only show a price ‘from’. We provide the median from several company price lists, the typical range, the lowest and highest prices and the hourly rate, with a dated source for every figure. You can find more prices for gardening work in the garden category.
