A hedge is the cheapest “fence”, but not the cheapest to maintain: it grows every year and usually needs trimming twice a year. Gardening companies most often charge for this service per linear metre, less commonly by the hour or a flat rate for the entire job. We collected rates from price lists and calculated the cost of trimming a typical garden hedge, including neglected and tall hedges.
How much does hedge trimming cost per linear metre?
According to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, trimming a hedge up to around 150 cm tall most often costs 15 PLN/linear metre. Half of the rates fall within 15 ‑ 17 PLN/linear metre, with the cheapest companies charging from 11.50 PLN/linear metre and the most expensive up to 30 PLN/linear metre. The rate covers trimming both sides and the top of the hedge, but does not always include raking up and removing the branches.
A linear metre is the length of the hedge measured along one side. If the hedge grows along the plot boundary and your neighbour does not trim their side, ask whether the company charges for trimming both sides or only the side facing your garden. Rate details are available at hedge trimming.
Hedge trimming price list: tall and old hedges, thuja and shaping
According to price lists, trimming a hedge taller than 150 cm and up to around 2 m costs about 19 PLN/linear metre, while old, neglected hedges and thuja cost around 30 PLN/linear metre. The higher rate reflects the need for a ladder or scaffolding, thicker shoots and a much larger volume of branches to clear away.

The final row is an example from one price list for a tall hedge that required a ladder and extensive clearing up. It shows that the per-metre rate becomes irrelevant for difficult jobs: the company prices the working time and waste removal instead.
How much does it cost to trim a garden hedge? Examples
Trimming 20 metres of hedge up to 150 cm tall costs around PLN 300 for one cut, while 50 metres costs around PLN 750, based on the median from the price lists. At typical rates, 50 metres costs PLN 750 ‑ 850.
| Hedge length (up to 150 cm) | One cut | Two cuts per season |
|---|---|---|
| 20 linear metres | around PLN 300 | around PLN 600 |
| 30 linear metres | around PLN 450 | around PLN 900 |
| 50 linear metres | around PLN 750 | around PLN 1,500 |
| 100 linear metres | around PLN 1,500 | around PLN 3,000 |
For short hedges of less than a dozen metres, many companies have a minimum job charge or add a travel fee, so the price per metre is higher than shown in the table. It is most economical to arrange hedge trimming together with other work, such as lawn mowing, which usually costs 0.50 ‑ 1 PLN/m². Our article lawn mowing: price list covers the full range of mowing prices.
How much does it cost to trim old thuja?
According to price lists, trimming old, neglected thuja costs around 30 PLN/linear metre, considerably more than standard hedge trimming (15 PLN/linear metre). Overgrown thuja have thick shoots that must be cut with a saw or secateurs, often from a ladder, and produce several times more branches for removal.
It is worth knowing that thuja do not tolerate cutting back into old wood well: areas without green needles usually do not produce new shoots. It is possible to reduce the height of an overgrown thuja hedge, but the sides cannot be cut back hard without leaving bare patches. If the thuja are several metres tall and sparse, removing and replacing them may sometimes be cheaper. Removing larger plants then costs the same as tree felling, while the stumps are removed by stump grinding, usually at PLN 115 ‑ 175 per stump.
In which months should a hedge be trimmed?
A formal hedge is usually trimmed twice a year: first around the end of May or beginning of June, after the spring growth, and again in August, no later than the beginning of September. Trimming later stimulates young shoots that will not have time to become woody before winter and may be damaged by frost.
Trimming calendar by hedge type:
- Fast-growing deciduous hedges (privet, hornbeam, barberry): from spring to August, even three times per season. Hard rejuvenation pruning is best done in late winter, before growth begins.
- Conifers (thuja, false cypress, yew): from April to August, without cutting back into old wood.
- Flowering hedges (forsythia, spiraea): immediately after flowering to avoid removing next year’s buds.
Before trimming during the bird breeding season, in spring and summer, check that there are no active nests in the hedge. Destroying the nests of protected species is prohibited.
How much does a gardening company charge per hour for hedge work?
A gardening company usually charges around 140 PLN/h per hour for hedge trimming when the hedge is tall, irregular or difficult to access and cannot be fairly measured by the metre. The hourly rate usually covers one person with equipment. For large jobs, the company sends two people and charges twice the rate.
When paying an hourly rate, ask for a time estimate before the work begins. An experienced gardener using petrol hedge trimmers can trim an even hedge up to 150 cm tall quite quickly, so for a standard hedge, a per-metre rate (15 ‑ 17 PLN/linear metre) is usually more predictable than an hourly rate.
Can branches be cut without permission?
Trimming hedges and shrubs on your own property does not require a permit or notification. Different rules apply to trees: routine maintenance is allowed, but excessive crown topping may be considered damage to the tree, for which the municipality (gmina) may impose a fine. Removing an entire tree often requires notification to the municipal office, as explained in our article tree removal: price list.
Under the Civil Code, you may cut branches from a neighbour’s hedge that extend onto your property after giving the neighbour a deadline to remove them. In boundary disputes, it is better to speak to your neighbour and, if in doubt, ask the municipal office or a lawyer.
How can you avoid overpaying for hedge trimming?
- Measure the length of the hedge before requesting a quote and give the company its length, height and a photo. This will ensure a fair quote per linear metre.
- Ask whether clearing up and branch removal are included in the price. This is the most common difference between a cheap and an expensive quote.
- Trim regularly. A hedge trimmed every season costs 15 ‑ 17 PLN/linear metre, while a neglected one costs around 30 PLN/linear metre.
- Combine gardening work into one job to avoid paying multiple travel charges.
- Arrange regular maintenance for the season if you have a long hedge. Companies are more likely to offer a lower rate for two or three cuts a year.
