Tree removal prices in listings can vary severalfold because companies quote for different trees and scopes of work: sometimes just straightforward felling from the ground, and sometimes sectional dismantling by an arborist near a roof, including branch removal. Below, we break down the cost based on public company price lists, provide an example for a plot of land and explain the formalities that determine whether you are allowed to remove the tree at all.

How is tree removal priced?

Tree removal is priced according to five factors: the size of the tree, access, its surroundings, the extent of the clean-up and the number of trees in one job. A reputable company will therefore conduct a site visit or ask for photographs from several angles and the trunk circumference.

  1. Tree size. The height and trunk circumference or diameter are taken into account. A small tree with a diameter of up to approximately 20 to 25 cm costs about PLN 550, while large trees cost more than the median of PLN 605.
  2. Removal method. Felling from the ground is the cheapest option. When there is nowhere for the tree to fall, an arborist dismantles it in sections from the top, using ropes or a lift, which takes several times longer.
  3. Surroundings. A building, fence, power line, greenhouse or cemetery headstones increase the price because each section must be lowered on a rope.
  4. Clean-up. Chipping branches, cutting the trunk into logs for a fireplace and removing the timber are listed separately in some price lists.
  5. Number of trees. Companies offer discounts when several trees are included in one job because they only charge once for travel and setting up the equipment.

How much does it cost to remove trees from a plot of land? An example

According to the median from price lists, removing three medium-sized trees from a plot of land costs about PLN 1,800, with a typical range of PLN 1,500 ‑ 2,600. If you want to lay a lawn or build a terrace there, you will also need stump grinding: approximately PLN 420 for three stumps. Here is the cost breakdown:

Item Price according to price lists Notes
Removal of one medium-sized tree PLN 500 ‑ 855 felling and site safety measures
Removal of a small tree approximately PLN 550 trunk up to approximately 20 to 25 cm in diameter
Removal of three medium-sized trees approximately PLN 1,800 discount for multiple trees may be available
Grinding one stump PLN 115 ‑ 175 stump up to approximately 40 to 50 cm in diameter
Grinding three stumps approximately PLN 420 excluding removal of wood chips
Stump grinder or wood chipper per hour approximately 400 PLN/h when the company charges by operating time

The stump does not need to be ground if the area where the tree stood will remain planted with shrubs or used as a meadow. It will slowly decay on its own, but for several years it will obstruct the mower and may produce new shoots.

Can trees be removed without permission?

On your own plot of land, for purposes unrelated to business activity, most small trees can be removed without notification. You must notify the municipal authority if the trunk circumference measured at a height of 5 cm exceeds 80 cm for poplars, willows, box elders and silver maples, 65 cm for horse chestnuts, black locusts and London planes, or 50 cm for other species. Notification itself is free of charge.

After notification, an official has 21 days to inspect the tree, followed by 14 days to raise an objection. If there is no objection, the tree must be removed within 6 months of the inspection. Different rules apply to trees on business premises, land entered in the register of historic monuments and forests, and additional local regulations may also apply. Before removing a tree, ask your municipal authority which rules apply to you.

What is the fine for removing a tree without permission?

The penalty for removing a tree without the required notification or permit is an administrative fine calculated according to the trunk circumference and tree species. For a large tree, it can be many times higher than the cost of the removal service itself, so cutting corners on the formalities is not worthwhile. The authority determines the amount of the fine, and it is worth consulting a lawyer in the event of a dispute. Notification is free, and a good company will remind you about it before providing a quote.

Removing a tree that poses a safety risk: what should you do?

Removing a tree that poses a safety risk, for example one broken in a gale or leaning over a roof, requires a prompt response but is still subject to regulations. The regulations provide exemptions for trees broken or uprooted by the wind, but a tree that is merely leaning or diseased will usually still require notification, so call the municipal authority before removing it. Take photographs of the tree before removal as evidence that it posed a danger.

Emergency tree removal usually costs more than scheduled work because the company must attend quickly, often after a storm when it has many jobs, and the tree must be dismantled in sections. Expect a price closer to the upper end of the price lists, namely PLN 1,500. If the tree grows within a road boundary or near a power line, report it to the road authority or electricity provider.

How do you remove a tree close to a house?

A tree close to a house is dismantled in sections from the top: an arborist climbs it in a harness or works from a lift, lowering each section on ropes. This is the only safe method when a roof, gutters, fence or cables are nearby. Attempting to fell such a tree yourself poses a risk to both health and the building, and any damage will usually not be covered by insurance.

What to ask the company before commissioning the work:

  • Does it have public liability insurance covering damage caused during tree removal? This is the most important question when the tree is over a roof.
  • Does the price include branches and timber? Chipping, cutting into pieces and removal can significantly affect how quotes compare.
  • Does the price include stump grinding, or only cutting the tree at ground level?
  • When can the work be done? The best time for tree removal is from mid-October to the end of February, outside the bird breeding season. In summer, the tree must be checked for nests.

Removal or pruning: when is tree care enough?

Pruning branches is a cheaper alternative to tree removal when the tree is healthy and only the limbs above a roof, driveway or neighbouring plot are causing a problem. Maintenance pruning does not require notification, provided it does not remove too much of the crown or damage the tree. For extensive pruning, ask the municipal authority what the limit is. A gardener usually charges about 90 PLN/h, while hedge trimming typically costs 15 ‑ 17 PLN/linear metre.
