Grass cutting is priced in several ways: per square metre, per are, per hectare, per hour or at a fixed rate per visit. This makes it difficult to compare two price lists directly. Below, we have collected all these rates in one place, calculated them for example plots and shown how much a full cutting season costs. The figures are medians from 5 public price lists published by gardening companies and municipal service providers, collected by indekscen.pl.

How much does grass cutting cost per m²?

Cutting grass with a petrol lawnmower most commonly costs 0.50 PLN/m² per square metre, while half of the price lists fall within the range of 0.50 ‑ 1 PLN/m². The lowest rate in our sources is 0.35 PLN/m², and the highest is 2 PLN/m². This is the price for an ordinary, regularly cut lawn on level ground, including basic edge trimming.

Three factors increase the rate per square metre: tall or wet grass, uneven ground and a small area. A small lawn with flower beds, trees and paths takes longer to cut than a rectangular lawn of the same size, so the company will either increase the rate per square metre or charge a fixed rate per visit. Large, level areas cost less per square metre.

How is grass cutting calculated? Examples for plots

The simplest way to calculate the cost of grass cutting is to multiply the lawn area (excluding the house, driveway and flower beds) by the rate per square metre. At the median of 0.50 PLN/m², one cut costs:

Lawn area Cost at the median Typical range
300 m² (small domestic garden) PLN 150 PLN 150 ‑ 300
500 m² PLN 250 PLN 250 ‑ 500
1000 m² (10 ares) PLN 500 PLN 500 ‑ 1,000
2000 m² (20 ares) PLN 1,000 PLN 1,000 ‑ 2,000

For small lawns, calculating the price per square metre produces a figure lower than the company will actually charge, because travel and equipment preparation must also be covered. According to price lists, a one-off cut of a small domestic lawn therefore costs around PLN 140 per service, regardless of whether the lawn measures one hundred or two hundred square metres.

The opposite applies to large areas. A hectare is 10 000 m², and the rate per hectare is around 1,000 PLN/ha, which is much less per square metre than for a lawn. Meadows and wasteland are cut with a tractor or flail mower, without precise edge finishing.

How much does 1 hour of grass cutting cost?

An hour of cutting grass with a petrol lawnmower costs around 95 PLN/h in price lists. Companies use hourly rates where the area is difficult to measure: on overgrown plots, slopes and gardens with numerous flower beds and obstacles.

For comparison, the median gardener’s rate for general garden work is 90 PLN/h, so hourly grass cutting costs roughly the same as other maintenance work. Charging by the hour is good value when the lawn is straightforward and the team works efficiently. On difficult ground, it is safer to agree on a price for the entire service so that you do not pay for every time the equipment has to be repositioned.

How much does cutting with a petrol brushcutter cost?

Cutting with a petrol brushcutter costs around 1.50 PLN/m², which is noticeably more than using a lawnmower (0.50 PLN/m²). A brushcutter (strimmer) is used where a lawnmower cannot go: on slopes, in ditches, along fences, on uneven ground and where the grass is more than several dozen centimetres tall.

Working with a brushcutter is slower and more demanding, so companies charge for it separately. If a plot has not been used for a season, the first cut is usually done with a brushcutter and subsequent cuts with a lawnmower. It is worth agreeing this when obtaining a quote: the first visit costs more, while subsequent visits are charged at the standard rate.

How much does an hour with a mowing tractor cost?

According to price lists, an hour of work with a mowing tractor or agricultural tractor costs around 125 PLN/h, which is more than an hour with a petrol lawnmower (95 PLN/h). However, a tractor can cut many times more land in an hour, so for meadows, orchards and areas larger than a dozen or so ares, it is usually the cheapest option per square metre.

When hiring a tractor, ask whether transporting the equipment is included in the price, as this may be charged separately for a remote plot, and whether the cut grass will be left in place or collected.

How much does lawn cutting cost for a full season?

The grass-cutting season in Poland usually runs from April to October, and domestic lawns are cut every 7 to 14 days. For 20 cuts of a 500 m² lawn (a total cut area of 10 000 m² over the season), the cost at the median is around PLN 5,000, typically PLN 5,000 ‑ 10,000.

For a 300 m² lawn cut every two weeks (around 14 times per season, totalling 4200 m²), the cost is around PLN 2,100. Many companies offer a seasonal subscription: a fixed monthly or per-visit fee that is lower than for individual jobs because the team can plan its route in advance.

Seasonal maintenance usually includes two additional jobs: lawn scarification in spring (median 2.50 PLN/m²) and hedge trimming, if there is a hedge on the plot (hedge trimming, median 15 PLN/linear metre). These services are compared below:

When should grass be cut to avoid paying more?

The cheapest approach is to cut grass regularly and when it is dry: the company can then use a lawnmower at the standard rate (0.50 PLN/m²), with no surcharges. Wet grass takes longer to cut, clogs the mower and leaves clumps of cuttings on the lawn, so some companies postpone the work or charge extra for clearing up.

  • First cut after winter usually takes place in April, once the grass has grown noticeably and the ground has dried. Do not cut it too short straight away: the first cut should be higher than subsequent ones.
  • First cut after sowing should only be done when the young grass is several centimetres tall and well rooted. For a new lawn (laying a lawn has a median of 21 PLN/m²), this is more important than the cutting rate itself.
  • Final cut usually takes place in October, before the first frosts. Grass left too tall over winter is more susceptible to disease.
  • Cutting height during the season should be several centimetres. Cutting too short in hot weather scorches the lawn, which then requires paid overseeding.

How much can you earn from grass cutting?

According to price lists, a company earns around 95 PLN/h per hour of work with a lawnmower and around 125 PLN/h per hour with a tractor. These are gross amounts charged to the customer: the contractor must use them to cover fuel, travel, equipment servicing, removal of cut grass and taxes. Regular jobs covering the entire season and several plots in one area are the most profitable because they reduce travel time.

How can you avoid overpaying for grass cutting?

  1. Measure the lawn without the house, driveway and flower beds. Companies often estimate the area by eye, usually rounding up.
  2. Ask what is included in the price: edge trimming, raking and removal of cut grass. Grass removal often costs extra.
  3. Do not let the grass become overgrown. Regularly cut grass can be handled with a lawnmower at the standard rate, while overgrown grass requires a brushcutter at around 1.50 PLN/m².
  4. Book the full season in advance. A subscription is cheaper than individual jobs and guarantees a date in May, when teams are busiest.
  5. For a large plot, ask for a quote per hectare or per hour with a tractor, rather than per square metre.
