A new house, a bare plot and a question: hire a landscape architect or plant by instinct? A garden design costs a fraction of the landscaping itself and helps prevent the most expensive mistakes: moving trees, digging up the lawn to install irrigation and choosing plants that will not survive their first winter. We have collected price lists from design studios and landscaping companies to show how much a design costs and how much the entire garden costs.

How much does a landscape architect charge for a garden design?

A landscape architect most often charges PLN 2,000 for designing a garden of up to around 500 to 800 m², and half of the price lists fall within the range of PLN 1,670 ‑ 3,000. This is the median from 5 public price lists published by studios and industry articles collected by indekscen.pl. The cheapest concepts for small gardens start at PLN 1,000, while premium studios charge up to PLN 4,000 or more.

The price depends on four factors:

  1. Garden area. Studios charge a fixed rate for a size bracket, for example up to 300 m², up to 500 m² or from 500 to 800 m².
  2. Scope of the design. A concept alone is the cheapest option, full documentation with a planting plan and technical drawings costs more, and 3D visualisations carry an additional charge.
  3. Studio segment. The difference between a local designer and a renowned studio can be severalfold.
  4. Region. Rates are higher in large cities.

What does a garden design include?

A concept garden design usually includes a site survey, a landscaping concept, often presented as a mood board with visual inspiration, and plant selection. A more comprehensive design also includes a detailed planting plan showing the number and placement of plants, technical drawings and a schedule of materials.

What a garden design does not usually include:

  • Landscaping. Planting, lawns and paths are quoted separately by the landscaping company.
  • Supervision of the work. Visits by the architect while the garden is being landscaped cost extra.
  • Irrigation design. This is a separate item in most price lists.

When comparing quotes, ask each studio for a list of the elements included in the price. An offer for PLN 1,000 and one for PLN 4,000 may cover entirely different scopes of work.

Garden design price per m2: how do studios calculate it?

Garden design is rarely priced per m². Studios more often charge a fixed rate for an area bracket, such as one price for a garden from 500 to 800 m². As a result, the price per metre decreases as the garden becomes larger: designs for a 300 m² and a 700 m² garden may cost a similar amount because they fall within the same bracket.

If a studio quotes a price per m², calculate the cost for the entire garden and compare it with the median of PLN 2,000. Large gardens of more than 1000 m² and designs with full construction documentation cost considerably more. According to the price lists of full-service companies, the design alone for such a garden costs around PLN 11,300.

How much does creating a garden cost in 2026?

According to gardening company price lists, creating a garden from scratch costs a median of 275 PLN/m², typically 240 ‑ 275 PLN/m². This rate covers basic gardening work: soil cultivation, plants, a lawn and irrigation. Construction work such as walls, fences, driveways and drainage increases the price per metre, while swimming pools, pergolas and outdoor kitchens are separate items.

Examples for gardens of different sizes, based on the median and typical range in contractors’ price lists:

Garden area Landscaping at the median Typical landscaping range
200 m² PLN 55,000 PLN 48,000 ‑ 55,000
500 m² PLN 138,000 PLN 120,000 ‑ 138,000
800 m² PLN 220,000 PLN 192,000 ‑ 220,000

The design is an additional expense, typically PLN 1,670 ‑ 3,000. It is clear that the design accounts for only a small part of the total budget, and a good design can reduce landscaping costs by specifying the quantities of plants and materials in advance.

How much do a lawn and irrigation cost in a new garden?

According to price lists, laying a seeded lawn costs a median of 21 PLN/m², typically 19 ‑ 33 PLN/m², including ground preparation and materials. Supplied and laid turf costs around 50 PLN/m². A 200 m² seeded lawn costs around PLN 4,200.

It is worth including automatic irrigation in the garden design before the lawn is laid. Pipes and sprinklers are installed in the ground before sowing seed or laying turf. Adding irrigation to an established lawn means digging it up and laying it again. We do not yet have a separate median price for irrigation design, but it appears as an additional item in studio price lists.

Is a free or online garden design worthwhile?

A free online garden design from an app or AI generator is useful for inspiration and for sketching the layout of paths and flower beds. It cannot replace a site survey, which assesses sunlight, soil, gradients and existing trees, all of which determine whether the plants will survive.

Cheaper alternatives to a full design:

  • A concept alone instead of full documentation. You pay closer to PLN 1,000 and select the plants with help from a nursery.
  • A garden consultation. Some studios offer a one-off visit to discuss the layout instead of preparing a complete design.
  • A design for only part of the garden, such as the area in front of the house or a flower bed beside the patio.
  • A free design from a nursery or contractor, if you buy plants from them or commission the landscaping. Ask whether you will own the design.

How can you create a garden cheaply?

The cheapest way to create a garden is in stages: begin with the design and groundwork, then add the lawn and irrigation, followed by planting and decorative elements in subsequent seasons. This spreads out the cost, which at the median of 275 PLN/m² reaches around PLN 138,000 for a 500 m² garden.

Practical tips to avoid overpaying:

  • Smaller plants instead of large specimens. Young shrubs and perennials cost a fraction of the price of large ones, and after two or three seasons the difference disappears.
  • A seeded lawn instead of turf, if you can wait a few weeks. The difference is 21 PLN/m² compared with around 50 PLN/m².
  • Combine groundwork and paths with house construction, while machinery is still on the plot.
  • Ask for a total price, rather than an hourly rate for a gardener.

What should you ask an architect before commissioning a design?

Before commissioning a garden design, ask the architect five questions, as the answers will determine whether a price within the PLN 1,670 ‑ 3,000 range is good value for you:

  1. How many site visits are included in the price and whether the site survey includes land measurements.
  2. How many concept versions you will receive and how much each additional revision costs.
  3. What format the design will be supplied in: PDF drawings, a plant list with quantities or visualisations.
  4. Whether the design accounts for the landscaping budget, meaning whether the architect will select plants and materials to match the amount you want to spend.
  5. Whether you can commission any company to carry out the work, or whether the design is tied to the studio’s contractor.

What is missing from other garden design price lists?

Online price lists usually present the offer of a single studio in one city. We compare prices from several studios and landscaping companies, provide the median, typical range and lowest and highest prices, and include a source and date for each one. This makes it easier to assess whether the quote you have received reflects market prices. We do not yet have local medians for cities for this service.
