Professional cleaning restores its colour in a day, and the price depends mainly on the surface area and whether stubborn dirt needs to be removed. How much does block paving cleaning cost per m²?

Professional block paving cleaning usually costs 9.50 ‑ 17 PLN/m², while the median from 6 price lists collected by indekscen.pl is 13 PLN/m². The cheapest offers start at 7 PLN/m², while the most expensive standard cleaning costs 20 PLN/m².

The standard rate covers pressure washing to remove sand, dust and light dirt. Removing stubborn stains (oil, rust, moss and mould), sealing and refilling the joints with sand cost extra. Three factors affect the price per metre:

1. Surface area. The larger the driveway, the lower the rate per m², as travel and equipment setup costs are spread over more square metres.
2. Level of dirt. Sand and dust come off quickly, while moss in the joints, lichen and grease stains require chemicals and more time.
3. Scope of service. A package combining cleaning with sealing or joint filling costs more, but usually less than ordering the same services separately.

How much does it cost to clean 100 m of block paving?

Cleaning 100 m² of block paving costs around PLN 1,300 at the median rate, with a typical range of PLN 950 ‑ 1,700. This covers standard pressure washing. If part of the driveway needs mould treatment or stain removal, that section will be charged at a higher rate.

Companies usually include cleaning the surface before applying the sealant in the sealing price, so a package may cost less than the sum of both rates. A sealant forms a layer on the paving that limits the absorption of water, oil and dirt, while colour-enhancing products also refresh faded colour. Can block paving be cleaned with a Karcher pressure washer?

Yes, block paving can be cleaned with a Karcher-type pressure washer, and this is how companies do it. However, care is needed with the pressure and the distance of the nozzle: an overly powerful jet used at close range washes sand out of the joints and may damage the surface layer of the paving, especially if it is older or coloured.

Companies often use surface cleaner attachments, which clean evenly without spraying sand around. After cleaning, a good contractor refills the joints with sand, as otherwise the paving may start to move and moss will grow back more quickly in the gaps.

How can you clean block paving yourself?

Cleaning block paving yourself makes sense for a small driveway with light dirt. Follow these steps:

1. Sweep and remove weeds from the joints with a brush or joint scraper.
2. Wet the surface and apply a suitable paving cleaner to any stains (different products are used for oil and for moss or algae), following the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Use the pressure washer at an angle, keeping the nozzle several dozen centimetres away from the surface, preferably with a surface cleaner attachment.
4. Rinse away the remaining dirt and cleaning product towards a drain, not onto the lawn.
5. Refill the joints with dry sand once the paving has dried.
6. Consider sealing a few days later, once the paving is thoroughly dry.

Doing the work yourself saves the service cost, but cleaning a medium-sized driveway usually takes a full day, and stubborn stains may still require a company with specialist chemicals.

Is block paving cleaning worthwhile?

Block paving cleaning is worthwhile because it costs a fraction of the price of the surface itself: laying concrete paving with materials has a median price of 260 PLN/m², compared with 13 PLN/m² for cleaning. Regular cleaning and sealing every few years slow the growth in the joints and the loss of jointing sand, which can eventually cause the paving to move and require costly repairs. Cleaning is less worthwhile for very old, damaged paving with sunken sections. Cleaning alone will not help in this case, and the money is better spent on repairing the sub-base.

How often should block paving be cleaned and sealed?

Block paving on a residential driveway usually only needs professional cleaning once every year or two and sealing every few years. The frequency depends on the location: paving shaded by trees and next to a lawn becomes overgrown with moss and algae more quickly, while a driveway used for parking accumulates oil stains faster. Between professional cleans, sweeping and removing weeds from the joints is usually sufficient.

The best time for cleaning is spring, after winter and exposure to road salt, or early autumn, before the leaves fall. Sealant is applied to dry paving in above-freezing temperatures when no rain is forecast, so companies usually schedule this work from late spring to September. It is easier to find an available appointment outside the peak season, and discounts are sometimes available.

If you are planning to have the paving sealed, order it together with cleaning. The contractor will need to clean and dry the surface thoroughly before applying the product anyway, so you pay for one visit rather than two. When ordering a package, also ask how long you must wait after sealing before driving onto the driveway.
