Before flying away for a week, you need to decide whether to leave your car by the terminal, at a private car park a few kilometres away, or take a taxi. The difference in price can be twofold or even threefold, although the flight is the same. We collected official and private car park price lists from several airports and compared them with the cost of taking a taxi.

Official or private parking: which offers better value?

A private car park with a shuttle bus offers better value for trips lasting several days or more, as the weekly price is usually lower than at an official airport car park. Official parking is more convenient: you can walk to the terminal, do not have to wait for a shuttle bus, and do not need to allow extra time for the transfer.

A comparison of car park types based on the price lists in our index:

Type of car park Price per week Access to the terminal
Private, secure car park with shuttle typically 150 ‑ 235 PLN/week shuttle bus, usually a few minutes’ drive
Official P4 long-stay car park, Chopin Airport around 300 PLN/week on foot or by airport bus
Official P1 and P2 multi-storey car parks, Chopin Airport around 490 PLN/week on foot, a few minutes
Cheapest price lists in the index from 130 PLN/week depends on the car park

At a private car park, ask how frequently the shuttle bus runs and whether it operates at night. For a six o’clock morning flight, the savings are not worthwhile if the first transfer departs too late.

How much does parking at Chopin Airport cost for 7 days?

A week in the official P4 long-stay car park at Chopin Airport costs around 300 PLN/week, while the P1 and P2 multi-storey car parks by the terminal cost around 490 PLN/week. The cheapest parking near Chopin Airport can be found at private, secure car parks in Okęcie and Włochy, where weekly prices are usually within the 150 ‑ 235 PLN/week range.

Warsaw and Kraków have more expensive official car parks than smaller airports such as Łódź or Gdańsk. The difference between parking by the terminal and using a private car park can therefore be greatest at Chopin Airport. If you are flying from Modlin, also check car parks close to the airport itself, as the taxi journey from Warsaw is long.

How much does airport parking cost in Wrocław, Katowice and other cities?

A week of airport parking in Wrocław, Katowice, Kraków, Gdańsk or Poznań usually falls within the national range of 150 ‑ 235 PLN/week. We do not yet have separate medians for each airport because we have collected only one or two price lists per airport. Below are quotations from airport price lists in Łódź, Gdańsk, Poznań and Kraków, each with a date on the service page.

Several private car parks with shuttle services operate near Wrocław Airport and Katowice Airport in Pyrzowice. Look for the cheapest parking near Wrocław Airport in the same way as in Warsaw: compare the price for the entire stay, not just the first 24 hours, and check the transfer times.

Why are the first 24 hours the most expensive?

The first 24 hours at an airport car park cost around 100 PLN/day, which is considerably more than one seventh of the weekly price. Car parks include service costs in the first 24 hours: receiving the car, the transfer to the terminal and the return transfer. For longer stays, these costs are spread over more days, so each additional 24-hour period is several times cheaper.

In practice, this means that airport parking is relatively expensive for a two or three-day trip. In that case, it is worth calculating the cost of a taxi or asking someone for a lift.

Airport parking or a taxi: which is cheaper?

Under the daytime tariff, a taxi to the airport costs around 3 PLN/km per kilometre, plus an initial charge of around PLN 7. For a 20 km journey each way, two trips, to and from the airport, cost around PLN 120 for the distance alone, excluding initial charges and the night tariff. The median cost of a week’s parking is 160 PLN/week.

How to compare the costs for your journey:

  1. Calculate the distance from your home to the terminal and multiply it by two for the return journey.
  2. Multiply it by the rate per kilometre in your city and add two initial charges. If you are flying at night, use the night tariff.
  3. Check the parking price for the entire stay, not per 24 hours, and add the fuel cost for driving your own car.
  4. Consider the number of people and the amount of luggage. For four people with suitcases, parking is often the most convenient option. For one person taking a short trip, a taxi is more likely to be cheaper.

For a short trip of two or three days and an airport close to home, a taxi often costs about the same or less. For a week or longer, private parking usually offers better value. Read more about taxi rates in the article taxi price per km.

When is the best time to book airport parking?

It is best to book airport parking online as soon as you buy your ticket, or no later than a few days before departure. Booking online can be cheaper than paying on arrival, and private car parks may fill every space during the summer holidays, school holidays and long weekends.

What to check when booking:

  • The price for the entire stay, not per 24 hours. Compare a week with a week, as price lists calculate parking periods differently, either by calendar day or in 24-hour periods from arrival.
  • Extension charges. Ask how much an additional 24 hours will cost if your return flight is delayed.
  • Transfer. Check whether the shuttle bus is included in the price for all passengers or whether there is an additional charge per person.
  • Insurance. Check whether the car park offers additional insurance for the duration of your stay and how much it costs.
  • Keys. Some car parks require you to leave your keys so that staff can move the car. If you are not comfortable with this, choose a car park without this requirement.

If you are travelling with the whole family, you could consider hiring a minibus with a driver instead of taking two cars and paying for parking. We cover prices in the article 9-seater minibus hire.

What will you not find in other comparisons?

Car park comparisons usually show the price list for just one car park or airport. We provide the median and range from several airports and private car parks, with separate figures for the first 24 hours and a full week, as well as the source and date for each price. This makes it easy to assess whether an offer is genuinely cheap or merely appears to be.
