Car hire companies advertise rates ‘from’ a certain amount per day, but the final price depends on the hire period, car class, mileage allowance and surcharges mentioned at the counter. Hiring a city car for a month costs around 1,900 PLN/month according to car hire price lists. This is considerably less than thirty days at the daily rate, which would amount to around PLN 2,500 at the median price of 84 PLN/day. The discount for a long hire period is therefore substantial and worth negotiating, even if it is not shown in the price list.

Monthly hire makes sense for an extended trip, while your own car is being repaired, when working in another city or while waiting for a new car. It usually includes third-party liability insurance and basic comprehensive cover, but the mileage allowance may be restrictive, with every kilometre over the limit charged separately.

How much does it cost to hire a car for a day?

Hiring a city or compact car for a day most commonly costs 84 PLN/day, with half of the price lists falling within the 74 ‑ 85 PLN/day range, based on 7 offers collected by indekscen.pl. The highest rates for this class, up to 99 PLN/day, usually apply to short hire periods with unlimited mileage. Passenger car, minibus or campervan hire: price comparison

Hiring a passenger car is the cheapest form of vehicle hire, while a minibus, premium car or campervan costs several times more per day. A 9-seater minibus hire usually costs 220 ‑ 230 PLN/day, a luxury or sports car hire costs 340 ‑ 565 PLN/day, and a campervan hire costs 525 ‑ 645 PLN/day.

How much does it cost to hire a van?

Hiring a van costs more than hiring a passenger car: according to price lists, a large box van suitable for moving house costs around 695 PLN/day, while a delivery van with a driver, charged per working day, costs around 800 PLN/day. The option with a driver is more expensive, but you do not have to drive a large vehicle in the city or worry about damage while manoeuvring.

When moving house, it is worth comparing three options: hiring a van to drive yourself, hiring a trailer for your own car and using a removals company. car trailer hire usually costs 53 ‑ 70 PLN/day, so it may be the cheapest option for a few boxes and small pieces of furniture. With a category B driving licence, you can drive vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of up to 3.5 tonnes, which includes most vans available from hire companies. If using a trailer, check whether the total weight of the vehicle and trailer is permitted by your licence category.

How much is the deposit for hiring a car?

The deposit for hiring a car is usually around PLN 1,000, although it may be lower for cheaper class A cars. The car hire company blocks the amount on a credit card or collects it in cash or by bank transfer, then returns it after the car is brought back undamaged. This may take between several and a dozen or so working days.

More companies now offer car hire without a deposit. This is not usually a free benefit: the daily rate is higher or you have to buy an additional protection package. What should you look out for when hiring a car?

When hiring a car, the biggest costs often come not from the basic rate, but from surcharges and damage you did not notice when collecting it. Before signing the agreement, check:

1. The mileage allowance and the price of each kilometre over the limit. Unlimited-mileage offers cost more, but may be cheaper for a long journey.
2. The insurance excess. Basic comprehensive insurance often has a high excess, which a protection package can reduce.
3. The fuel policy. ‘Full to full’ is the safest option, as refuelling by the car hire company is more expensive.
4. Out-of-hours surcharges. Collecting or returning the car outside office hours or on a non-working day may incur a separate charge.
5. Travel abroad. This requires the car hire company’s permission and often incurs a surcharge.
6. The car’s condition on collection. Take dated photographs of every scratch and dent together with a car hire company employee.

How can you hire a car as cheaply as possible?

• Hire for longer. For hire periods longer than a week, the daily rate can fall to as little as 38 PLN/day.
• Book in advance, especially for holidays and long weekends, when prices rise.
• Choose a smaller class. A city car is sufficient for most trips, and the difference in the daily rate is substantial.
• Collect the car during office hours and do not request delivery to your address if you can get there yourself.
• Compare the total price: the daily rate multiplied by the number of days, protection package, mileage allowance, surcharges and deposit.
