How much is the deposit for car hire?
The deposit for car hire is usually around PLN 1,000 in rental company price lists and increases with the class of car. The rental company usually places a hold on this amount on a credit card and releases it after the car is returned undamaged. With a debit card, some companies take the deposit as a payment and refund it by bank transfer, which may take several days.
The deposit is not part of the rental cost, but you must have sufficient available funds to cover it. The hold is higher when travelling abroad or hiring a higher-class car.
Can you hire a car without a deposit?
Yes, you can hire a car without a deposit from many rental companies, but this usually requires paying extra for a protection package, which increases the daily rate. This option makes sense if you do not have a credit card or do not want a large sum blocked for the duration of your holiday. What should you watch out for when hiring a car?
Most misunderstandings about car hire concern additional charges and the condition of the car when it is returned, rather than the daily rate. Before signing the agreement, check:
- Mileage limit. An offer with a limit is cheaper, but every kilometre above the limit costs extra. One of the price lists shows a clear difference between the rate with a limit and the unlimited rate.
- Collection and return times. Collecting or returning the car outside office hours, at night or on a public holiday often involves a separate charge.

- Rental period. The longer the rental, the lower the daily rate; the lowest rates in our data apply to rentals of more than a week.
- Car class and model. Each higher segment means a higher rate.
- Mileage limit. Unlimited offers are more expensive, but they may be worthwhile for a long journey.
- Dates. Summer holidays, winter holidays and long weekends push up prices and reduce the availability of cheap cars.
- No-deposit option. Convenient, but it increases the cost of each day.
If your dates are flexible, check the price for several different periods. The difference between midweek and the weekend, or between July and September, can be greater than the difference between two rental companies.
Car hire abroad: are prices similar?
