How much does it cost to replace a roller shutter belt and winder?

Replacing the belt in an external roller shutter is the most common repair and usually costs the same as a standard service call, namely PLN 135 ‑ 175. One of the price lists used to calculate the median quotes a belt replacement price equal to our median, PLN 165.

Replacing the winder, the mechanism that tensions and retracts the belt, costs a similar amount because it involves the same work on the casing and guide rails, but the price of the new winder is added to the labour charge. Winders and belts are inexpensive parts, so the technician will usually replace them together if one is worn. It is worth asking about this when booking the repair to avoid paying for another call-out a few months later.

What should you do if your roller shutter stops working?

If your roller shutter stops working, check a few simple things before calling a technician, as some faults do not require a repair costing PLN 165:

1. Winter and ice. A frozen roller shutter will not move. Do not pull the belt or repeatedly press the button, just wait for it to thaw.
2. Electric roller shutter power supply. Check the fuse in the consumer unit and the battery in the remote control. After a power cut, some radio-controlled drives need to be paired again.
3. Obstruction in the guide rail. Leaves, a twig or a plant pot that has shifted on the windowsill can block the curtain.
4. Limit switches. If the motor runs but the roller shutter stops too early or too late, the limit switches usually need adjusting. This is a quick adjustment, not a motor replacement.
5. Broken belt or cord. This requires professional service. Do not try to roll up the curtain by hand, as the slats bend easily and would add the cost of parts to the repair.

Repairing an electric roller shutter costs more than repairing a belt-operated model and is close to the upper end of the price range, at up to PLN 320. The technician must diagnose the motor, controller or switch and, if the drive needs replacing, add its cost. Control faults are cheaper: reprogramming the remote control or adjusting the limit switches usually falls within the typical range of PLN 135 ‑ 175.

For older motorised roller shutters, it is worth asking whether just the motor can be replaced with a modern equivalent designed for a tube of the same diameter. Replacing the entire roller shutter would then cost considerably more than replacing the drive alone.

Repairing or replacing a roller shutter: which is more cost-effective?

How much does it cost to repair internal and pleated blinds?

Repairing an internal roller blind or pleated blind is usually cheaper than repairing an external roller shutter because the mechanism is simpler and there is no need to work outside the building. However, replacing the entire fabric blind is often cheaper than repairing it: installation of an internal roller blind costs PLN 110 ‑ 135, while installation of pleated blinds costs around PLN 150 each.

The chain, spring or mounting bracket are the parts that most commonly fail in internal roller blinds. Pleated blinds usually need their cords replaced after they become worn through over several years. How can you avoid overpaying for roller shutter servicing?
