A fly screen may seem like a minor purchase, but prices vary greatly, from an inexpensive frame for a standard window to a pleated screen covering an entire patio door, which can cost as much as several window screens. We collected prices from manufacturers’ and installers’ price lists to compare the different types and show how much it costs to equip an entire flat.

How much does a made-to-measure fly screen cost?

A made-to-measure fly screen most often costs PLN 100 each, according to 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, with a typical range of PLN 85 ‑ 100. This is for a basic fixed-frame fly screen for a standard window, made to order from measurements. The cheapest offers start at PLN 69, usually when ordered online and installed yourself.

On the made-to-measure mosquito screens page, we show the sources used to calculate this median. Bear in mind that some price lists quote the price of a complete fly screen, while others give only the cost of installation without the product. Before comparing two offers, ask exactly what the price includes: measuring, manufacture, delivery and fitting.

Which fly screen is best for a window?

A fixed-frame fly screen is best for a standard tilt-and-turn window: it is the cheapest option, requires no drilling and is easy to remove for cleaning. A roller fly screen costs more, but retracts into a cassette when not needed. A pleated screen is practical for large glazed areas and doors because it folds like an accordion and takes up little space.

The price lists give the following prices for each type:

There is currently only one source for each option other than the basic fixed-frame screen, so treat these prices as a guide rather than a market median.

Type of fly screen Price Best suited to
Fixed-frame window screen PLN 85 ‑ 100 standard windows in flats and houses
Roller window screen around PLN 89 windows where the screen needs to retract out of sight
Roof-window screen around PLN 150 lofts, roof windows
Large-window screen around PLN 500 wide windows, shopfronts
Magnetic door screen around PLN 200 balcony doors, budget option
Hinged door screen around PLN 250 balcony and patio doors, frequent use
Pleated patio-door screen around PLN 500 large glazed areas, sliding doors

How much do fly screens for balcony doors cost?

A fly screen for a balcony door costs from around PLN 200 for a magnetic curtain to around PLN 500 for a pleated patio-door screen. A hinged door screen falls between the two at around PLN 250. This is a rigid frame with mesh that opens like a normal door and closes automatically.

The best choice depends on how often you use the balcony. A magnetic curtain is inexpensive, but wears out faster with heavy use and is less secure in windy conditions. A hinged door screen is more durable, while a pleated screen leaves the threshold clear and does not obstruct sliding doors. One price list quotes around PLN 600 for installing a balcony-door fly screen as a separate service, but this is a single quote from one company, so always request an estimate based on your measurements before placing an order.

How much does a roof-window fly screen cost?

Price lists quote around PLN 150 each for a roof-window fly screen. This is usually a roller fly screen fitted within the window recess because a fixed-frame screen does not stay securely on a sloping sash. For roof windows, ask whether the fly screen might interfere with a blind or shutter that is often already installed in the same place.

If the roof windows have not yet been installed, it is easier to order the fly screens with them. We discuss window installation costs in the article replacing windows in a flat.

How much do fly screens for an entire flat cost?

Six fixed-frame fly screens for a typical flat cost around PLN 600 (typically PLN 510 ‑ 600). For a house with ten windows, the cost is around PLN 1,000. You also need to add a fly screen for a balcony or patio door, from PLN 200 to PLN 500, depending on the type.

Example for a flat in a block:

  1. Five windows with fixed-frame fly screens: around PLN 500.
  2. Balcony door with a hinged fly screen: around PLN 250.
  3. Roof window in a loft, if applicable: around PLN 150.

We do not add these items together because the prices come from different price lists. When ordering several screens at once, ask about a discount and free measuring, as the company only needs to make one visit.

Is a fly screen cheaper than a blind?

A fixed-frame fly screen is cheaper than a blind: the median price of a fly screen is PLN 100, while blind installation for an internal blind alone has a median price of PLN 120, excluding the cost of the blind. External shutters with installation cost around PLN 950 per window. Fly screens and blinds serve different purposes, so in practice this is not a choice between the two, but two separate purchases.

When ordering fly screens, it is also worth checking the windows themselves. If a sash has dropped or does not close tightly, a fixed-frame fly screen will not fit properly either. window adjustment usually costs PLN 58 ‑ 125 per sash, while seal replacement in uPVC windows costs around PLN 110 per window. Read more about adjustment in the article adjusting uPVC windows.

What determines the price of a fly screen?

The price of a fly screen depends primarily on its type: fixed-frame screens are the cheapest, while roller, door and pleated screens cost more. The most important factors are:

  • Type of fly screen. A roller cassette or pleated mechanism costs more than a simple frame with mesh.
  • Size. Companies charge by the square metre for large areas, around 180 PLN/m².
  • Scope of service. A fly screen that you fit yourself is cheaper than an order that includes measuring and installation.
  • Installation method. Non-invasive installation, using hooks on the frame, is quicker. Invasive installation, using screws in the window frame, is more expensive but more durable.
  • Profiles and mesh. Aluminium profiles are more rigid than plastic ones, while anti-allergy or pet-resistant mesh costs more than standard fibreglass mesh.

Fly-screen profiles: is it worth making one yourself?

You can assemble a fixed-frame fly screen yourself using profiles, corner pieces and mesh sold by the metre, but the saving is small when a complete made-to-measure screen starts at PLN 69. DIY assembly makes sense for an unusually shaped window or if you only need to replace worn mesh in an old frame. For new windows, it is better to order a screen made from measurements because a poorly cut frame will sit away from the sash and let insects through.

How can you avoid overpaying for fly screens?

  • Order in spring, before the season begins. Lead times become longer in June and July.
  • Measure according to the manufacturer’s instructions or arrange professional measuring. A one-centimetre error with a fixed-frame screen can prevent it from staying on the window.
  • Compare like-for-like offers, either with or without installation and with or without delivery.
  • Do not overpay for a pleated screen where a simple frame will do. A fixed-frame screen costing PLN 100 is usually sufficient for a bedroom window.
  • Ask about the warranty for the mesh and mechanism on roller and pleated screens, as these are the parts most likely to fail.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fit a fly screen to a window?

How much does a fly screen for a large window cost?

Do fly screens need to be removed for winter?

Can a fly screen be fitted without drilling?

How much does a hinged door fly screen cost?
