In most cases, there is no need to replace the entire window: a new insulated glass unit can simply be fitted into the existing frame. How much does it cost to replace the glass in a double-glazed window?
According to 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, replacing the glass in a double-glazed window costs between PLN 200 and PLN 850, with a median of PLN 400. The lower end applies to small, standard panes made from ordinary glass. The upper end covers large sashes and glazing units with better thermal transmittance. The following factors have the greatest impact on the price:
- Size. The glass in a balcony window has several times the surface area of the glass in a small bathroom window.
- Type of glass. Toughened, laminated (burglar-resistant), acoustic and low-emissivity glass costs more than ordinary float glass.
- Number of panes in the unit. A triple-glazed unit is heavier and more expensive than a double-glazed one.
- Travel and measurement. Insulated glass units are made to measure, so two visits are usually required: one to take measurements and another for installation.
- Hardware adjustment, if the sash no longer closes as it did before the replacement.

When new glass is enough: the frame is straight, the hardware works, the window is no more than a few decades old and has good performance, and the only problem is a crack or condensation between the panes.
Condensation inside the glazing unit is also a reason to replace just the glass unit rather than the window. Moisture between the panes means that the unit has lost its seal and the insulating gas has escaped. It cannot be dried out or resealed in place. Replacement then costs the same as for cracked glass, usually PLN 300 ‑ 525. Condensation on the room side, however, is usually caused by humidity and ventilation rather than damaged glass.
When it is better to replace the window: the frame is warped or cracked, the hardware is worn (replacing the hardware costs about PLN 325 per sash), the window has an old profile with poor thermal performance, or you plan to replace several windows at once. Can just the glass be replaced in a PVC window?
The glass unit in a PVC window can be replaced without removing the frame because it rests on glazing blocks inside the sash and is held in place by glazing beads. A tradesperson removes the beads, takes out the old unit, inserts a new made-to-measure unit and refits the beads. According to price lists, replacing the glass in a PVC window usually costs PLN 300 ‑ 525.
It is important for the new unit to have the same overall thickness as the old one. A triple-glazed unit can usually only be fitted where the profile was designed from the outset to accommodate thicker glazing. Replacing double glazing with triple glazing may therefore be impossible without replacing the sash, and it is often only cost-effective when buying a new window: according to the sources, a triple-glazed window alone costs about 1,000 PLN/m² of surface area, excluding installation.
How much does it cost to replace the glass in a balcony or wooden window?
Replacing the glass in a balcony window usually costs towards the upper end of the PLN 300 ‑ 525 range because the unit is large and heavy. We do not have a separate median for balcony doors, but price lists explicitly link the price to the size of the glass. For comparison, according to one source, new balcony doors with installation cost about PLN 4,200, so replacing just the glass is clearly cheaper if the sash is in good condition.
In a wooden window, the insulated glass unit is fitted in a similar way to one in a PVC window, but the glazing beads are often nailed or glued in place and are harder to remove without damage. In old box-type windows with single glazing, usually only the individual pane is replaced. This is a different and cheaper glazing service than replacing an insulated glass unit.
How long does it take to replace window glass?
Replacing an insulated glass unit on site usually takes several dozen minutes per sash, but the period between requesting the service and installation is generally several days to two weeks. Insulated glass units are made to measure, so the process begins with measurement, followed by an order from the manufacturer and finally installation. Until installation, it is best to secure the cracked sash with tape on the inside and avoid opening it unnecessarily.
After fitting the new unit, it is worth asking the tradesperson to check the closing pressure. If the sash rubs or does not close properly, window adjustment costs about PLN 88 per sash according to price lists. How can you avoid overpaying for window glass replacement?
- Check the markings on the spacer bar between the panes: these show the manufacturer, date and sometimes the composition of the glazing unit. A photo of these markings will help you get a more accurate quote by phone.
- Ask what the price includes: measurement, travel, disposal of the old glass and hardware adjustment. Price lists often exclude travel outside the town or city and disposal.
- Do not overpay for special glass if you do not need it. Burglar-resistant glass makes sense on the ground floor, while acoustic glass is useful beside a busy road.
- Replace several units at once if more than one has condensation inside. A single journey and measurement visit will reduce the cost per unit.
- Compare the cost with a new window if the frame is old or warped, or the hardware is worn.
- Check your home insurance if the glass cracked because of an impact from outside, a storm or a break-in.

If the entire window needs replacing, roof window installation (labour only) costs about PLN 1,000 according to price lists.
