Above-knee and below-knee prosthetic legs: 2026 prices, NFZ and bionic options

indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index

A mechanical below-knee prosthetic leg usually costs PLN 4,800 at prosthetic clinics (typically PLN 4,400 ‑ 7,650). The median price of an above-knee prosthetic leg with a knee mechanism is PLN 27,800, while an advanced myoelectric prosthesis, also called a bionic prosthesis, costs around PLN 80,000. Part of the cost may be covered by NFZ reimbursement and funding from PCPR or MOPS.

At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)

  • A mechanical below-knee prosthetic leg usually costs PLN 4,400 ‑ 7,650 at prosthetic clinics, with a median of PLN 4,800.
  • According to price lists, an above-knee prosthetic leg with a knee mechanism costs around PLN 27,800.
  • An advanced myoelectric (bionic) prosthesis costs around PLN 80,000.
  • The cheapest below-knee prostheses in the collected price lists start at PLN 3,500, while the most expensive temporary prostheses cost up to PLN 15,000.
  • A private physiotherapy appointment, needed when learning to walk with a prosthesis, usually costs PLN 160 ‑ 200.

The question of how much a prosthetic leg costs usually arises at a difficult time, and the answer ‘it depends’ is not very helpful. Below, we break down the cost by specific type of prosthesis: below-knee, above-knee and myoelectric, and explain how NFZ and PCPR funding can reduce the patient’s contribution. The figures come from public price lists published by prosthetic clinics, not estimates.

How much does a below-knee prosthetic leg cost?

A mechanical below-knee prosthetic leg most commonly costs PLN 4,800, according to 3 clinic price lists collected by indekscen.pl. The typical range is PLN 4,400 ‑ 7,650, while the cheapest options start at PLN 3,500. The upper end, up to PLN 15,000, applies to temporary prostheses and versions with more expensive components.

The basic price of a below-knee prosthesis usually includes a socket fitted to the residual limb, steel, aluminium or titanium connectors, a prosthetic foot and, optionally, a cosmetic cover. Electronic features are not included and are priced separately. Details, quotations from price lists and the date checked are available on the leg prosthesis page.

How much does an above-knee prosthetic leg cost?

According to price lists, an above-knee prosthetic leg with a knee mechanism costs around PLN 27,800, several times more than a below-knee prosthesis at PLN 4,800. The difference comes down to one component: the knee joint. An above-knee prosthesis must replace a joint that bends when walking, locks under load and absorbs the impact of each step.

The simplest mechanical knees have either a manual lock or a weight-activated brake. More expensive models use hydraulic or pneumatic systems that adjust resistance to walking speed. Microprocessor-controlled knees are the most expensive: sensors measure the position of the leg dozens of times per second and reduce the risk of falling on stairs or uneven ground.

Types of prosthetic legs and their prices: comparison

These are the prices of the main types of lower-limb prostheses in the collected price lists:

Type of prosthesis Price according to price lists Usually suitable for

Below-knee prosthesis, cheapest options from PLN 3,500 basic components, partly within the NFZ limit
Above-knee prosthesis with a knee mechanism around PLN 27,800 above-knee amputation
Myoelectric (bionic) prosthesis around PLN 80,000 active users, selected indications

Myoelectric prosthesis (advanced)PLN 80,000PLN 80,0001

There are fewer sources for these variants than for below-knee prostheses, so the prices of above-knee and myoelectric prostheses should be treated as a guide. The final amount can only be determined by a clinic after measuring the residual limb.

How much do modern prosthetic legs and bionic prostheses cost?

A bionic prosthetic leg, meaning a myoelectric prosthesis with electronics controlling the knee or foot, costs around PLN 80,000, while the most advanced models cost even more. This is more than ten times the price of a basic below-knee prosthesis (PLN 4,800).

For this price, users get joints that respond to movement in real time, greater stability on slopes and stairs, and less fatigue when walking. The disadvantages include a battery that needs charging, more expensive servicing and out-of-warranty repairs. Whether a bionic prosthesis is appropriate in a particular case is assessed by an orthopaedic specialist and prosthetist, taking into account the user’s activity level, the condition of the residual limb and their age.

Does NFZ reimburse the cost of prosthetic legs?

Yes, NFZ reimburses lower-limb prostheses prescribed by a specialist, and revised reimbursement rules have been in force since 1 January 2024. The prescription no longer needs to be confirmed by an NFZ branch, so the patient can take it directly to a clinic that has an agreement with NFZ.

Reimbursement is subject to a financial limit depending on the type of prosthesis and level of amputation. If the selected prosthesis costs more than the limit, the difference is covered by the patient or by funding from other sources. Some clinics advertise prostheses ‘with no patient contribution’: this usually means that they prepare applications to NFZ and PCPR or MOPS for the patient at the same time. You can check the current limits with an NFZ branch or a prosthetic clinic, while a doctor will determine the medical indications.

How can you reduce your contribution towards a prosthetic leg?

The main way to reduce your contribution towards a prosthetic leg is to combine several sources of funding. The usual process is as follows:

  1. Obtain a prescription from a specialist (an orthopaedic specialist or surgeon) for a prosthesis.
  2. Choose a clinic that has an agreement with NFZ and obtain a quote for the specific components: the socket, connectors, foot and knee.
  3. Apply for PFRON funding through PCPR (or MOPS in cities with county status) to cover part of the amount above the NFZ limit.
  4. Seek additional programmes: charities, fundraising campaigns and vocational activation programmes, particularly for myoelectric prostheses.
  5. Compare at least two quotes. The difference between clinics for the same configuration can be considerable, as shown by the full range from PLN 3,500 to PLN 15,000.

Questions to ask the clinic: whether the price includes both a temporary and a definitive socket, how many fittings are included, what warranty covers the components, and how much a replacement socket will cost if the residual limb changes in volume.

Prosthesis after a leg amputation: what else affects the cost?

Getting a prosthesis after a leg amputation usually involves two stages: first a temporary prosthesis, then a definitive one. The residual limb changes shape during the first few months, so the first socket often needs to be replaced, which entails an additional cost. The price is affected by:

  • level of amputation: a below-knee prosthesis is cheaper than an above-knee one because it does not require a knee mechanism,
  • materials: titanium and carbon fibre are lighter but more expensive than steel,
  • type of prosthetic foot: rigid, dynamic or electronic,
  • cosmetic cover: optional and charged separately,
  • servicing: adjustments and replacement of liners and sockets in subsequent years.

How often does a prosthetic leg need to be replaced?

A prosthetic leg is not a one-off expense: the socket is usually replaced more often than the entire prosthesis, while components such as the foot or knee wear out over several years. Reimbursement regulations specify a minimum period of use before another prescription can be issued, although earlier replacement may be possible if the patient’s medical condition changes. When planning a budget, it is therefore worth considering not only the purchase price but also servicing and socket replacement in subsequent years. You can confirm the current periods of use with a prosthetic clinic or NFZ.

How much does rehabilitation with a prosthesis cost?

A private physiotherapy appointment usually costs PLN 160 ‑ 200, with a median of PLN 180 according to 98 price lists. Learning to walk with a new prosthesis usually takes many weeks, so a course of 10 appointments costs around PLN 1,800. Rates vary between cities (details are available on the physiotherapist appointment page). For example, the median is PLN 180 in Warsaw and PLN 190 in Wrocław.
