Self storage price lists can be difficult to compare, however, as some quote prices per metre and others per unit, while some show net prices and others gross prices. Which unit should you choose: how much fits into 2, 5 and 10 m²?
A 1 to 2 m² unit will usually hold a dozen or so boxes, a bicycle, or tyres and seasonal equipment. A 3 to 5 m² unit can hold the contents of one room, while an 8 to 15 m² unit can accommodate the contents of a studio or two-room flat. Here is an approximate comparison:

When choosing a unit, its height matters as well as its floor area. Stacking furniture and placing boxes up to the ceiling can allow you to rent a smaller unit. The easiest approach is to make a list of your belongings and ask the facility to recommend a size: most have a calculator or sample sets on their website.
Self storage or a garage: which is cheaper?
A small self storage unit is cheaper than renting an entire garage: the median for a unit is 250 PLN/month, compared with 565 PLN/month for a garage, according to listings collected by indekscen.pl. With a large quantity of belongings, the calculation is reversed: an 8 to 15 m² unit costs around 810 PLN/month, so a nearby garage may offer better value.
Differences besides the price:
- Agreement. Self storage is usually rented by the month with a short notice period, while a garage is often rented for longer and requires a deposit.
- Access. Self storage facilities are often open around the clock and provide trolleys and a loading ramp. A garage in a block of flats may be closer, but it may not have a trolley or lift.
- Conditions. Units inside buildings can be dry and heated, while a metal garage freezes in winter and heats up in summer, which can damage furniture and electronics.

How does self storage differ from a container and warehouse space?
Self storage consists of units inside a heated or at least enclosed building, a container is a steel box on a yard, and warehouse space is intended for businesses and charged by the metre. A storage container on the outskirts of a city costs around 80 PLN/month per month, making it cheaper than a unit, but it is unheated and usually accessible only during the yard’s opening hours. Warehouse space for businesses costs 20 ‑ 32 PLN/m²/month in rent, plus a service charge and utilities, and usually requires a longer agreement.
A unit inside a building is better for belongings sensitive to moisture and frost, such as wooden furniture, electronics, documents and instruments. A container is sufficient for tyres, tools and garden furniture.
Is self storage worth it?
Self storage is worthwhile when you need to keep belongings for several months, for example during a renovation or between two homes, and when the alternative is a larger flat. Six months in a small unit costs around PLN 1,500, while a full year costs around PLN 3,000. By comparison, a square metre of a flat in Warsaw costs PLN 15,646/m², so keeping rarely used belongings in your flat also comes at a price.
It is not cost-effective to store low-value belongings for years. After two or three years, the rent for the unit often exceeds the value of its contents. In that case, it is better to sell or give away some of the items.
How much does it cost to store belongings during a move or renovation?
Storing the contents of a studio during a three-month renovation involves the unit rental fee plus two transport journeys. The bill includes the following items:

How should you prepare belongings for storage in a unit?
Belongings for a self storage unit are best packed in matching, sturdy boxes labelled on the side, allowing them to be stacked high. A few rules will help save space and avoid frustration:
- Dismantle any furniture that can be taken apart, such as beds, tables and shelving units. Put the screws in a bag and tape it to the relevant part.
- Dry the fridge and washing machine and leave their doors ajar to prevent a musty smell.
- Wrap mattresses and upholstered furniture in plastic, but not airtight: temperature changes can cause moisture to collect beneath it.
- Place the items you will need most often near the entrance, and put those you will not need until the end of the rental period against the back wall.
- Take photographs and make an inventory. This will be useful in the event of damage or an insurance claim.
How can you avoid overpaying for self storage?
- Check whether the price is net or gross. Some price lists show net prices, which affects the total cost for private customers.
- Ask about a discount for a longer rental period or advance payment. Facilities often offer discounts for rentals lasting several months.
- Do not pay for more space than you need. Use matching boxes and stack them high so everything fits into a smaller unit.
- Check your insurance. Home insurance sometimes covers belongings kept outside the home, in which case additional cover is unnecessary.
- Compare locations. Facilities on the outskirts of cities are usually cheaper than those in the centre, and travel time matters little if you visit infrequently.
