A piano may look like a piece of furniture, but it has to be transported very differently. An acoustic upright piano usually weighs between 180 and 300 kg, has a high centre of gravity towards the back and contains a delicate mechanism, while a grand piano is even heavier and needs to be partially dismantled. Transporting a piano within the same city most often costs PLN 550, according to 6 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within the PLN 390 ‑ 750 range. The cheapest offers, from PLN 300, usually cover digital pianos or ground-floor to ground-floor transport. The most expensive, up to PLN 1,500, are for heavy instruments carried to upper floors without a lift.

The price usually includes a team, most often three or four people, protection for the instrument using blankets and film, a trolley and straps, transport and carrying it into the property. Upright or grand piano transport: how much does each option cost?

According to price lists, transporting a grand piano costs around PLN 1,000, clearly more than an upright piano, for which the median is PLN 550. A grand piano usually weighs between 300 and 550 kg. Before transport, its legs, pedal lyre and lid must be removed, the body placed on its side on a special skid, and the instrument reassembled at its destination.

How much does an old piano weigh, and why does this increase the price?

An old acoustic upright piano usually weighs between 180 and 300 kg, and older instruments with a cast-iron frame and solid casing can be near the upper end of this range. Its weight determines the number of people required and whether the instrument can be carried safely down the stairs using straps. In a stairwell with a tight turn, the company may have to carry the piano upright, which takes longer and pushes the price towards PLN 1,500.

This is why companies ask about the following before preparing a quote:

1. Type and dimensions of the instrument: whether it is an upright piano, digital piano or grand piano, and the length of a grand piano.
2. Floor and lift access at both locations. A passenger lift usually cannot support the piano and the team, so the stairwell is what matters most.
3. Width of doors and turns in the stairwell, as well as any steps outside the entrance.
4. Distance between the addresses and whether the transport will go outside the city.
5. Date: Saturdays and urgent bookings may be more expensive.

How much does piano transport outside the city cost per kilometre?

Transporting a piano outside the city is usually charged at the local transport rate, which is PLN 390 ‑ 750, plus a surcharge for every kilometre travelled. In Warsaw and the surrounding area, companies add a mileage charge once the vehicle crosses the city boundary. For a move to another voivodeship, the price therefore increases mainly because of the journey rather than the work of carrying the piano.

For a long journey, ask whether the company charges for mileage one way or both ways, as the empty return journey may be included in the rate. In the price lists cited, piano transport in Warsaw is among the least expensive in our comparison: Warsaw companies publish starting prices for local transport that are close to the lower end of the PLN 390 ‑ 750 range. In Kraków, trade articles give prices closer to the upper half of this range, while prices in Łódź are around the middle. A standard removals company can transport a piano only if it has the right equipment and experience, and many companies explicitly exclude instruments from their services. One hour with a van and a two-person team usually costs 150 ‑ 260 PLN/h, but two people are not enough to carry a piano safely down the stairs. When moving the contents of an entire flat, it is generally most cost-effective to book a removals service by the hour and hire a specialist company to move the piano separately on the same day.

Transporting it yourself in a hired van, with daily hire usually costing 220 ‑ 230 PLN/day, may be practical for a digital piano. With an acoustic piano, the risk of damaging the instrument, the stairs or your back is too high, and repairing the mechanism often costs more than professional transport.

After including transport, an inexpensive piano advertised on the fourth floor of a building without a lift may cost as much as a more expensive instrument on the ground floor.

Practical advice before booking transport:

• Ask about insurance for the instrument in transit and who is responsible for any damage to the stairwell.
