Piano tuning: cost in 2026, how often to tune and how long it takes

indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index

Piano tuning in Poland most often costs PLN 350 per tuner visit (typically PLN 250 ‑ 400, with price lists ranging from PLN 100 to PLN 420). A piano is usually tuned once or twice a year, so the annual cost is around PLN 350 to PLN 700. It costs more for a neglected instrument and travel outside the city.

At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)

  • A single piano tuning usually costs PLN 250 ‑ 400, while the median in tuners' price lists is PLN 350.
  • With two tunings a year, keeping a piano in tune costs around PLN 700 per year based on the median.
  • Tuning with a pitch raise, required for a piano that has not been used for a long time, takes around 4 hours and costs up to PLN 420.
  • Transporting a piano within a city usually costs PLN 390 ‑ 750, and the instrument must be retuned after a move.

A piano goes out of tune on its own, even when no one plays it: the wood and strings react to changes in humidity and temperature in the home. Tuning is therefore an ongoing instrument maintenance cost, not a one-off repair. Below, we compare prices from tuners’ price lists, calculate the annual cost and explain why tuning an old piano costs more. Finally, we suggest what to ask the tuner before booking a visit.

How much does piano tuning cost?

Piano tuning most often costs PLN 350 per visit, according to 5 tuners’ price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the price lists fall within the PLN 250 ‑ 400 range, the cheapest offers start at PLN 100, while the most expensive, involving a pitch raise, reach PLN 420. Details and quotations from price lists are available on the piano tuning page.

The price covers tuning at the customer’s premises only. It does not include inspecting and regulating the key mechanism, replacing broken strings or repairing hammers, as these are separate, more expensive services. Tuners usually charge separately for travel outside the city.

How much does piano tuning cost per year?

Keeping a piano in tune costs around PLN 700 per year with two tunings, typically PLN 500 ‑ 800. With one tuning a year, the median is PLN 350. Here is how the costs compare depending on how intensively the instrument is played:

How you use the piano Tunings per year Annual cost based on the median
Occasional playing at home 1 PLN 350
Regular practice, child attending music school 2 PLN 700
Intensive use, lessons, performances 3 to 4 from PLN 1,100 to PLN 1,400

Some tuners offer preferential prices to regular customers, so it is worth asking about a discount or a recurring appointment, for example in spring and autumn.

How often should a piano be tuned?

A piano is usually tuned once or twice a year, preferably after a change in the heating season, as this is when air humidity changes the most. A new piano needs to be tuned more often during its first year because the strings are still stretching. An instrument used for frequent practice, for example for music school exams, should be tuned more often.

Signs that a piano needs tuning:

  1. Octaves and chords sound “sour”, even though you are playing correctly.
  2. Individual notes waver, because the two or three strings producing the same note are no longer in tune with one another.
  3. The piano is out of tune with other instruments or with a recording you are playing along to.
  4. A year has passed since the tuner’s last visit, even if you cannot hear anything wrong.

How much does it cost to tune an old piano?

Tuning an old piano or one that has not been used for a long time usually costs more than a standard tuning, at the upper end of the range or above, up to PLN 420. This is because a pitch raise is required: a piano that has not been tuned for years sounds much lower than it should, so the tuner must gradually increase the tension of all the strings. One price list states that tuning with a pitch raise of up to a quarter tone takes from 4 to 4.5 hours.

For a severely neglected instrument, the tuner may suggest two visits several weeks apart, as the tuning quickly becomes unstable after a significant increase in string tension. An inspection may sometimes reveal that strings must be replaced or the mechanism repaired first. Before buying an old piano from an advert, ask a tuner to assess its condition: this is a small expense compared with restoring the instrument.

How long does piano tuning take?

A standard tuning of a regularly serviced piano usually takes from an hour and a half to two hours. Tuning with a pitch raise on a neglected instrument takes around 4 hours. The room should be quiet during this time, so it is worth arranging the visit when no one will be vacuuming or watching television nearby.

Can you tune a piano yourself?

Tuning a piano yourself is possible only in theory and is not cost-effective for amateurs. You need a tuning lever, string-muting wedges and a good ear or specialist app, but the greatest challenge is developing a feel for the tuning pins. A string under the wrong tension can break, and replacing it costs more than tuning at PLN 350. Digital pianos do not have this problem because they do not go out of tune.

Acoustic or digital piano: which is cheaper to maintain?

A digital piano does not require tuning, saving an annual cost of around PLN 700 for two tuner visits. It is also lighter, so moving it costs less. An acoustic piano, however, has a natural sound and a full keyboard mechanism, which music schools expect students to use at more advanced stages of their education.

In practice, the choice is as follows: if a child is just starting and it is unclear whether they will continue playing, a digital instrument keeps ongoing costs down. If the student attends music school or there is already a good acoustic piano at home, regular tuning is a sensible expense, as an out-of-tune instrument harms the musical ear and discourages practice.

What work other than tuning might a tuner recommend?

In addition to tuning, a tuner may recommend regulating the mechanism, voicing the hammers, replacing a broken string or cleaning the inside of the instrument. Each of these jobs is a separate item in the price list and costs more than tuning alone at PLN 350. They do not need to be done at every visit: mechanism regulation is usually commissioned every few years or when the keys begin to respond unevenly, stick or knock. Ask the tuner to quote a price before carrying out any additional work.

Moving and tuning: how much does it cost to transport a piano?

Transporting a piano within a city most often costs PLN 550 (typically PLN 390 ‑ 750), while transporting a grand piano costs around PLN 1,000. A piano must be tuned after every move, but not immediately: the instrument should be left in its new location for two to three weeks to acclimatise to the conditions in the room. When moving, therefore, budget for piano transport plus one tuning.

How can you avoid overpaying for piano tuning?

  • Ask whether the price is net (excl. VAT) or gross (incl. VAT) and whether it includes travel. Some price lists give a net price plus a separate travel charge.
  • Arrange recurring appointments. Tuners offer regular customers better prices, and a regularly tuned piano does not require an expensive pitch raise.
  • Control the humidity. A piano kept away from radiators and windows stays in tune longer, so you pay for visits less often.
  • Separate tuning from mechanism regulation. Ask whether the tuner is recommending regulation, as this is a separate, more expensive service.
