An intrauterine device (IUD), commonly called a coil, is one of the most effective methods of contraception and one of the least expensive when calculated per year, as it remains in place for several years. Two questions arise when choosing one: hormonal or copper, and how much will it cost including the appointment? We compare prices from clinics’ price lists and examine both types of IUD. You should decide which method is right for you together with your gynaecologist.
How much does private IUD fitting cost?
Private IUD fitting most often costs PLN 1,000 for the procedure alone, according to 3 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the offers fall within the PLN 850 ‑ 1,300 range. This is the price when the patient brings an IUD purchased from a pharmacy.
When the clinic sells the IUD as part of a fitting package, the total usually comes to PLN 1,200 ‑ 1,700, with a median of PLN 1,450. The most expensive offers, at up to PLN 1,800, cover the fitting of a hormonal IUD and include the device. The price depends on the city, facility and whether the patient has a healthcare plan under which fitting may be cheaper.

Hormonal or copper IUD: what is the difference?
A hormonal IUD releases a small dose of levonorgestrel in the uterus, while a copper IUD works without hormones through the action of copper ions. Both are among the most effective methods of contraception, but they differ in their effect on periods, how long they last and their price.
| Feature | Hormonal IUD | Copper IUD |
|---|---|---|
| Example models | Mirena, Kyleena, Jaydess, Levosert | many models, including those with gold or silver |
| How it works | levonorgestrel thickens cervical mucus and changes the lining of the uterus | copper ions have a spermicidal effect |
| Periods | usually lighter and less painful, and may sometimes stop | may be heavier and more painful |
| How long it lasts | 3 to 8 years, depending on the model | usually 5 to 10 years, depending on the model |
| Price of the IUD | higher | lower |
| Fitting with the IUD included | closer to PLN 1,800 | closer to PLN 850 |
The patient information leaflet states exactly how long a particular IUD lasts. Once this period has passed, the IUD must be removed or replaced with a new one.
How much does a hormonal IUD such as Mirena cost?
A hormonal IUD is more expensive than a copper one, and having Mirena fitted with the device included is among the most expensive offers in the price lists collected, at up to PLN 1,800. Kyleena and Jaydess are smaller hormonal IUDs, also intended for women who have not given birth. They last for less time than Mirena, so they may cost more per year despite having a similar purchase price. You can check the current price of the IUD itself with a pharmacy or clinic when booking, as we do not collect prices for medicines and pharmacy products.
How much does a copper IUD cost?
A copper IUD is the least expensive type, and fitting with the device included usually falls within the lower part of the PLN 1,200 ‑ 1,700 range. The procedure itself costs the same as for a hormonal IUD, typically PLN 850 ‑ 1,300. Copper IUDs are chosen by women who do not want or cannot use hormones, as well as those looking for a long-term method. The most common drawback is heavier periods during the first few months.
How many years does an IUD last?
An IUD lasts from 3 to 10 years, depending on its type and model. Small hormonal IUDs have the shortest lifespan, while some copper IUDs last the longest. When comparing costs, it is therefore worth dividing the price by the number of years the device lasts: a more expensive IUD that lasts twice as long is often cheaper overall than a less expensive one with a shorter lifespan.
Is IUD fitting available through the NFZ?
The fitting and removal of an IUD are free when performed by a gynaecologist with an NFZ contract. The patient then pays only for the prescription IUD purchased from a pharmacy. IUDs are not reimbursed, so their price is the same as for a private appointment. Waiting times and the fact that not every NFZ clinic fits IUDs can be barriers, so it is worth asking when booking.
What are the drawbacks of an IUD?
The most common drawbacks of an IUD are discomfort during fitting, irregular spotting during the first few months and, with a copper IUD, heavier periods. Spontaneous expulsion of the IUD is less common, so the doctor explains how to feel for the threads and recommends check-ups. Perforation of the uterine wall during fitting is a very rare complication. An IUD does not protect against sexually transmitted infections.
An IUD is also not suitable for every woman. Contraindications may include active infections, certain uterine abnormalities and unexplained bleeding. A pre-fitting assessment is therefore required, with the decision made by a gynaecologist.
IUD or the pill: which costs less?
An IUD requires a one-off payment for the device and its fitting, after which there are no further costs for several years apart from check-ups. Contraceptive pills are purchased every month, and the prescription must be renewed at an appointment from time to time. Over the longer term, an IUD usually costs about the same or less, and there is no need to remember a daily dose. The choice of method should, however, be based primarily on health and personal preferences rather than price, so discuss it with your doctor.
What additional costs should be included in the price of IUD fitting?
In addition to the procedure and the IUD itself, the patient usually pays for several other items. When receiving private treatment, these are worth considering in advance:
- Pre-fitting assessment. A private private gynaecologist appointment usually costs PLN 250 ‑ 350. The doctor takes a medical history and checks for contraindications.
- A recent cervical screening test and other tests, if required by the doctor before fitting.
- Transvaginal ultrasound. transvaginal ultrasound (gynaecological) usually costs PLN 145 ‑ 170 and may be performed before fitting or during a check-up to confirm the position of the IUD.
- Local anaesthetic, if offered by the clinic, which usually costs extra.
- A follow-up appointment a few weeks after fitting, followed by regular gynaecological check-ups.
Some clinics sell a package covering the consultation, fitting, ultrasound and follow-up for a single price. When comparing offers, ask exactly what is included.

How to choose a clinic and avoid overpaying
- Ask whether the price includes the IUD. This is the most common reason for differences between offers.
- Check your healthcare plan, if you receive one through work. Fitting under a subscription plan may be less expensive.
- Compare the annual cost, not just the purchase price of the IUD.
- Ask about the follow-up appointment: whether it is included and when it takes place.
- Discuss all health concerns with your doctor. The choice between a hormonal and copper IUD depends on your health, periods and family plans.

Frequently asked questions
How much does private IUD fitting cost?
Sama procedura założenia kosztuje prywatnie zwykle PLN 850 ‑ 1,300, a najtańsze gabinety biorą od PLN 700. Wkładkę trzeba doliczyć osobno, chyba że gabinet sprzedaje ją w pakiecie.
Can an IUD be fitted through the NFZ?
How much does a five-year IUD cost?
Does having an IUD fitted hurt?
Założenie wkładki trwa kilka minut i u wielu kobiet przypomina silny skurcz miesiączkowy.
Can a partner feel an IUD?
Is an IUD 100% effective?
