A campervan offers the promise of freedom: you can go wherever you like, with your accommodation travelling with you. However, the bill for this kind of holiday depends on three things that price lists mention in the small print: the season, the rental period and charges not included in the daily rate. We break down the cost using price lists from rental companies in different parts of Poland and compare a campervan with a caravan and a minibus.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan per day?

Campervan hire most often costs 535 PLN/day per day, according to 5 rental company price lists collected by indekscen.pl, with half of the offers falling within the range of 525 ‑ 645 PLN/day. The cheapest offers start at 320 PLN/day per day, while the most expensive reach 789 PLN/day. Details and sources are available at campervan hire.

The variation is mainly due to the season and class of vehicle. A small van-based campervan is cheaper than an overcab motorhome with a bed above the cab for a family with children, while a semi-integrated motorhome with a large bathroom costs the most. Some rental companies quote net prices, so when comparing offers, make sure the rate includes VAT.

How much does a campervan cost per day during and outside the peak season?

At the height of the summer holidays, in July and August, a campervan day rate is usually near the upper end of the range, closer to 789 PLN/day. In autumn, winter and early spring, the same vehicles are considerably cheaper, with rates falling to around 320 PLN/day. At a single rental company, the difference between low and high season can reach several dozen per cent.

Rental companies usually divide the year into three periods:

  1. High season (from mid-June to the end of August): the highest rate and often a minimum rental period of 7 days.
  2. Mid-season (May, early June and September): an intermediate rate and a shorter minimum rental period.
  3. Low season (from October to April): the lowest daily rates, sometimes with rentals available for as little as 2 or 3 days.

September is a good compromise: the weather can still feel like summer, campsites are quiet, and a campervan costs less per day than in August.

How much does it cost to hire a campervan for a week or longer?

A week in a hired campervan costs around PLN 3,700 for the vehicle alone, typically PLN 3,700 ‑ 4,500. Two weeks cost around PLN 7,500. For longer rentals, the daily rate usually falls, and for a rental of 30 days or more, one price list quotes around 165 PLN/day per day.

Rental period Cost of the campervan alone Notes
1 day 525 ‑ 645 PLN/day rarely available during the peak season
3 days (long weekend) around PLN 1,600 availability is better outside the peak season
7 days PLN 3,700 ‑ 4,500 typical minimum during the summer holidays
14 days around PLN 7,500 some companies offer a discount
30 days or more around 165 PLN/day per day long-term rental

The calculations are the median multiplied by the number of days, without discounts or surcharges. In practice, it is worth negotiating for a two-week rental because the rental company saves on cleaning and preparing the vehicle between customers.

What is not included in the daily rate?

In addition to the daily rate, you usually pay a refundable deposit, fuel and additional charges. The deposit for a campervan is usually several thousand PLN, held on a card or paid by bank transfer, and is returned after the vehicle is brought back without damage. The service charge and the fee for returning a dirty campervan are usually several hundred PLN each.

Charges and conditions worth asking about before booking include:

  • Refundable deposit: the amount, how it is paid and how many days it takes to be returned.
  • Service charge: a one-off fee for preparing the vehicle, cooking gas and toilet chemicals.
  • Bedding, towels, barbecue, bicycles and chairs: included by some companies and charged separately by others.
  • Mileage limit: whether there is a daily limit and how much excess mileage costs.
  • Travel abroad: whether it is permitted and whether there is a surcharge.
  • Returning the vehicle with empty toilet and grey-water tanks: companies often charge a fee for emptying them.

There are also travel expenses: fuel, road tolls and campsite fees, which are not included in our index.

How much fuel does a campervan use per 100 km?

A van-based campervan with a diesel engine usually uses between 10 and 14 litres of diesel per 100 km. Larger and heavier models, driving fully loaded, into a headwind or quickly on a motorway all increase fuel consumption. For a 2000 km trip, you should therefore allow for 200 to 280 litres of fuel and calculate the cost using the current price at the filling station.

Is hiring a campervan worth it?

Campervan hire offers the best value for a family or group of several people who would otherwise need both a car and accommodation. For two people travelling within a single region, a car and local accommodation can be cheaper. Here is a comparison of daily rates with other vehicles in our index:

How much does it cost to hire a campervan in Warsaw, Kraków and Poznań?

We do not yet have local median campervan hire prices for individual cities because few rental companies publish their price lists. Our sources come from rental companies in Trójmiasto, Kraków, Poznań and Wisła, and rates in large cities fall within the same range of 525 ‑ 645 PLN/day. Differences between cities are smaller than differences between seasons, so if you are looking for a cheaper offer, changing the dates is more effective than changing the collection city.

Can you sleep in a campervan or caravan in a car park?

Sleeping in a campervan or caravan in a regular car park in Poland is not prohibited in itself, provided the vehicle is parked correctly and local rules or the car park regulations do not exclude it. Camping, however, may be prohibited, including extending an awning or placing tables and chairs outside the vehicle when not on a campsite. Additional restrictions apply in national parks and many tourist destinations, so check the signs.

For an overnight stop during a journey, campsites and dedicated campervan sites with access to water and waste-disposal facilities are the best options. Rules vary abroad, and wild camping can result in heavy fines in some countries.

How can you avoid overpaying for campervan hire?

  • Book your summer holiday in advance, ideally in winter: the cheapest campervans for July and August are booked first.
  • Consider September or June, when the daily rate is lower but the weather is still good.
  • Compare the total price, not just the daily rate: include the service charge, bedding and mileage limit.
  • Check your liability for damage and whether the protection package reduces the deposit.
  • Take photographs of the vehicle when collecting it, including the interior, so you do not pay for scratches caused by someone else.
  • Match the size of the campervan to the number of people: a larger vehicle means a higher daily rate and greater fuel consumption.
