The price depends on the tank’s capacity, travel distance, whether the service is provided by a municipal utility or a private company, and whether the fee for discharging sewage at a treatment plant is included. When comparing quotes, ask explicitly whether the stated amount includes the discharge fee.

Septic tank emptying: price per m3 or per collection?

Most companies charge for septic tank emptying per collection, while some charge a fixed call-out fee plus a rate for each cubic metre pumped out. In both models, it makes sense to arrange a collection only when the tank is nearly full: with a price per collection, you pay the same for half a tank as for a full one, while with a price per m³, the fixed call-out fee is spread over a larger volume of sewage. A rate per m³ is better for small tanks and holiday homes, while a fixed price per collection is better for a full 10 m³ septic tank.

How often should a 10m3 septic tank be emptied?

A 10 m³ septic tank used by a family of four needs to be emptied approximately every 3 to 5 weeks. One person typically uses between 2.5 and 3.5 m³ of water at home each month, and nearly all of it enters the septic tank. Four people therefore produce between 10 and 14 m³ of sewage a month, roughly the full capacity of the tank.

For two people, the typical annual collection cost is PLN 1,500 ‑ 2,200, and for four people it is PLN 3,000 ‑ 4,400. A septic tank larger than 10 m³ does not reduce the annual bill as much as you might expect: fewer collections are needed, but each one costs more. The table assumes normal water use. Water used from the tap to water the garden does not enter the septic tank, but washing machines, dishwashers and frequent baths significantly increase the amount of sewage.

How many times a year should a septic tank be emptied?

A septic tank must be emptied often enough to ensure that it never overflows, and the municipality may specify a minimum collection frequency in its regulations. Inspectors compare the number of receipts with water use recorded by the meter: if a family uses several dozen cubic metres of water a year but has only a few cubic metres collected, the municipality may ask where the rest went.

The owner of a house with a septic tank must have a contract with a company holding a municipal permit and retain proof of payment for collections. Failure to have a contract or receipts may result in a fine, while the amount and inspection procedure depend on the municipality. If in doubt, ask the municipal office which documents you need to present.

Can you empty a septic tank yourself?

You cannot empty a septic tank yourself: liquid waste may be collected only by a company holding a municipal permit to empty non-drainage tanks and transport sewage, which must deliver it to a sewage reception facility. Discharging sewage onto a field, into a ditch or into a forest is an offence and pollutes groundwater used by neighbours with wells.

Private septic tank collection is permitted, provided that the private company holds the required permit. In many municipalities, a municipal utility and several private companies operate alongside one another, and a list of authorised operators is available from the municipal office or in its Public Information Bulletin.

How long does it take to empty a 10m3 septic tank?

Pumping out a 10 m³ septic tank usually takes between 15 and 30 minutes, or around an hour including travel and setting up the hose. The vacuum tanker must be able to park within a few to several metres of the access hatch, so if you have a long driveway, ask the company about the length of its hose. Difficult access or the need to break up a hardened surface layer makes the process longer and may increase the cost.

Septic tank or domestic sewage treatment plant: which is cheaper?

Sludge is removed from the treatment plant once or twice a year, at around PLN 200 per collection, instead of requiring a dozen or more visits by a vacuum tanker.

How can you pay less for septic tank emptying?

1. Check whether a municipal utility operates in your municipality. It may be the cheapest option, charging from PLN 160 per collection.
2. Empty the tank when it is full. When the price is per collection, every collection of a partly filled tank is a waste of money.
3. Save water. Tap aerators, dual-flush toilets and repairing leaking taps reduce the number of collections each year.
4. Keep rainwater separate. Gutters connected to the septic tank can mean several extra collections after every downpour.
5. Check that the tank is watertight. A septic tank that takes in groundwater fills up faster, while a leaking one may result in a fine for contaminating the ground.
6. Look after the pipes. A blocked drain between the house and the septic tank requires a plumber: drain unblocking has a median cost of PLN 250.
