A thyroid nodule detected on an ultrasound is a common source of stress and often prompts people to seek the earliest available appointment. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is a standard test used to assess the cells that make up the lesion. We collected prices from facility price lists to show not only the cost of the procedure itself, but the entire process: from an ultrasound and an endocrinologist consultation to the result. This is not a substitute for medical advice: a doctor decides whether a biopsy is necessary.

How much does a private fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid cost?

A private fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid most often costs PLN 300, according to 3 facility price lists collected by indekscen.pl, with half of the prices falling within the PLN 280 ‑ 380 range. The cheapest offer found is PLN 260, while the most expensive is PLN 460. The differences are mainly due to the facility and city: public clinics with commercial price lists can be cheaper than private clinics. Sources with quotations are available on the thyroid biopsy (fine-needle aspiration biopsy) page.

The price includes an ultrasound-guided biopsy. Before paying, ask whether the price includes cytological assessment of the sample and whether it covers one nodule. Some facilities charge an additional fee for each further lesion sampled.

How much does the complete diagnostic process for a thyroid nodule cost?

The complete private diagnostic process for a thyroid nodule usually consists of several separately charged items, and the biopsy is only one of them. These are the typical prices for each stage:

Stage Price according to price lists Purpose
TSH test PLN 37 ‑ 41 assessment of thyroid function before the consultation
Neck and thyroid ultrasound PLN 260 ‑ 415 description of the nodule and assessment for biopsy
Endocrinologist consultation PLN 255 ‑ 315 referral and discussion of the result
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy PLN 280 ‑ 380 collection of cells from the nodule

Not everyone goes through every stage. Some endocrinologists perform an ultrasound during the consultation and immediately assess whether a biopsy is needed, while some facilities perform a biopsy based on a previous ultrasound report. A follow-up consultation to discuss the result may be cheaper than the initial appointment.

Is a thyroid biopsy worthwhile?

A thyroid biopsy is worthwhile when a doctor recommends it based on the ultrasound report: the size and appearance of the nodule and the features described by the radiologist. Not every nodule needs to be sampled. Small lesions with a benign appearance are often simply monitored with further ultrasound scans, which costs less over a year than a biopsy: one follow-up neck ultrasound typically costs PLN 260 ‑ 415. However, if a doctor believes that a nodule requires further investigation, postponing a biopsy because of its price, around PLN 300, rarely makes sense.

If you are unsure whether a biopsy is necessary, you can seek a second opinion from another endocrinologist. This costs the same as a standard consultation, PLN 255 ‑ 315, and can provide reassurance when making the decision.

Private biopsy or hospital biopsy: which should you choose?

A private fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid and one provided under the NFZ are the same test. The main differences are the waiting time and convenience. Privately, you usually pay PLN 280 ‑ 380 and can often get an appointment within a few days. Under the NFZ, the test is free, but you need a referral and the waiting time may be longer. When choosing a facility, consider the doctor’s experience with ultrasound-guided biopsies and whether there is an on-site cytology laboratory, as this can mean a faster result.

Is a thyroid biopsy free under the NFZ?

A thyroid biopsy is free under the NFZ if you have a referral, usually from an endocrinologist at an NFZ-contracted clinic. Waiting times depend on the region and facility, and we do not have our own data on waiting lists. You can check current appointment availability at clinics and laboratories using the NFZ search tool: https://terminyleczenia.nfz.gov.pl/.

A common approach is to combine both routes: have the consultation and tests privately to obtain the ultrasound result sooner, then continue treatment under the NFZ. Before paying for a private biopsy, check whether the doctor treating you under the NFZ will accept a result from another facility. They usually will if you have the complete cytology report.

How long does a thyroid biopsy take?

The needle sampling itself usually takes a few minutes, while the entire appointment, including preparation and the ultrasound, takes around 15 to 30 minutes. It takes longer when there are several nodules because the doctor collects a separate sample from each lesion. The wait for the cytology result is usually several days to two weeks, depending on the laboratory.

Does a thyroid biopsy hurt?

For most people, a thyroid biopsy hurts about as much as having blood taken from a vein: you feel a needle prick and brief pressure. The needle is very thin, so an anaesthetic is not usually given. A dressing is placed on the neck after the test, and there may be slight tenderness or bruising for a day or two. If you are anxious, tell the doctor before the procedure.

How should you prepare for a thyroid biopsy to avoid paying twice?

Repeating a biopsy because too little material was collected means a second bill of around PLN 300. A few simple steps can reduce this risk and make the appointment easier:

  1. Bring your ultrasound results, including the report and images of the nodules, as well as a recent TSH result.
  2. Tell the doctor about any medication that affects blood clotting. Only a doctor should decide whether you need to stop taking it.
  3. Ask what the price includes: one or several lesions, cytological assessment and a written report.
  4. Arrange an appointment to discuss the result. A cytology report alone means little without a discussion with a doctor.
  5. Compare two or three facilities. The price range from PLN 260 to PLN 460 for the same test is considerable.

How should you read a thyroid biopsy result?

Thyroid biopsy results are reported using the Bethesda system, which has six categories: from a non-diagnostic sample through benign lesions to suspicious and malignant lesions. Most thyroid nodules prove to be benign, but the meaning of a particular result and the next steps should always be discussed with a doctor. For intermediate categories, such as category 3, monitoring or a repeat biopsy is often recommended. Do not interpret the result yourself based on online forums.

When planning your budget, remember that the result is usually followed by another endocrinologist consultation, costing around PLN 275, and that monitoring a nodule may also require a follow-up ultrasound every few months or once a year.

Where can you get a cheaper thyroid biopsy?

A thyroid biopsy is usually cheaper at clinics that offer commercial services alongside their NFZ contract and in smaller towns and cities. Clinics in the centres of large cities are more likely to charge close to the upper end of the range, PLN 460. We do not yet have separate median prices for individual cities, so check local price lists. We show the general level of service prices in each city on our city pages, such as Warsaw and Kraków.
