How much does shower enclosure installation labour cost?

Labour for installing a shower enclosure usually costs PLN 390 ‑ 700 for an enclosure with a tray and about PLN 500 for panels alone, without a tray. The price depends on several factors:

• Door type. Sliding doors on rollers are the simplest, while pivot and hinged doors require more precise alignment.
• Shower tray. Positioning and levelling a tray, including connecting the trap, involves extra work. A low-profile tray often requires the trap to be recessed into the floor.
• Enclosure shape. A quadrant, pentagonal or freestanding enclosure has more components than a simple corner enclosure.
• Condition of the walls. Crooked walls and uneven tiles require more time to adjust the profiles.
• City. Rates are highest in Warsaw, Gdańsk and Wrocław.

The difference arises when the plumbing system needs to be altered, for example by moving the drain, adding a water supply point or adapting connections for a concealed tap. In that case, plumber (service) charges separately for each task.

An enclosure with a tray is cheaper to install if the bathroom already has a tray of the same size, as the entire job then costs PLN 390 ‑ 700 in labour. A shower without a tray, with a linear drain and walk-in panel, looks modern but requires a sloped floor, waterproofing and new tiles in the shower area.

A shower without a tray also requires:

1. Installation of a linear drain, usually PLN 390 ‑ 440.
2. Creating a slope towards the drain, about PLN 550.
3. Waterproofing at 51 ‑ 66 PLN/m² per square metre of labour.
4. Floor tiles, often with epoxy grout because it is waterproof.

This means that replacing a shower tray with a walk-in shower is a small renovation, not simply an enclosure replacement. What does shower enclosure removal and installation involve, step by step?

Removing and installing a shower enclosure usually takes one working day, and you can use the shower after about 24 hours, once the silicone has cured. The typical sequence of work is as follows:

1. Turning off the water and removing the doors, followed by the panels and profiles screwed to the wall.
2. Cutting away the old silicone and removing the shower tray. A tray on legs comes out quickly, while a tray enclosed with tiles must be chiselled out.
3. Inspecting the drain and wall. The tradesperson checks whether the trap is blocked, whether there is any damp behind the tray and whether the tiles are firmly attached to the wall.
4. Filling holes left by the fixings for the old profiles and adding waterproofing in the corner if necessary.
5. Installing the new tray and enclosure, adjusting the doors and applying silicone.
6. Leak test: spraying water on the doors and joints for a few minutes before the tradesperson leaves.

If mould or a damp wall is found behind the old tray, it is better to stop the installation and deal with the cause first. A new enclosure installed against a damp wall will soon start leaking just like the old one, and repairing it after installation means paying for the same labour twice.

How can you avoid overpaying for a shower enclosure replacement?

• Buy an enclosure and tray in the same size as the old ones. This allows the drain to remain in place, so you do not have to pay a plumber for alterations.
• Ask for a quote that includes removal. A cheap installation quote can become expensive if removal and disposal of the old enclosure are added on site.
• Ask about sanitary silicone with an antifungal additive and who is responsible for leaks during the first few months.
• Check that all parts are included before the tradesperson arrives. A missing seal or end cap means another visit and another charge.
• Combine jobs. Replacing the tap while the enclosure is being installed costs less than arranging a separate visit.
