Bathroom waterproofing: is it worth it? 2026 cost and a 5 m² example

indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index

Bathroom waterproofing is always worthwhile in the shower area and on the floor, as it costs little compared with repairs after a leak. According to price lists, the median labour rate is 58 PLN/m², typically 51 ‑ 66 PLN/m², while a 5 m² bathroom usually requires around 12 m² of waterproofing, which means approximately PLN 700 for professional labour, excluding materials.

At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)

  • According to price lists, labour for bathroom waterproofing usually costs 51 ‑ 66 PLN/m², with a median of 58 PLN/m².
  • Waterproofing a 5 m² bathroom (the floor and shower walls, around 12 m²) costs approximately PLN 700 in labour, excluding materials.
  • According to sources, a complete renovation of a 5 to 7 m² bathroom, including materials, costs around PLN 21,800, so waterproofing accounts for only a small part of the budget.
  • Labour for laying tiles on a waterproofed surface usually costs 105 ‑ 165 PLN/m².
  • Installing a linear shower drain, which requires careful waterproofing, usually costs PLN 390 ‑ 440.

Waterproofing is a layer that cannot be seen after renovation, so it is easy to omit or apply without sufficient care. Below, we explain whether bathroom waterproofing is worthwhile, where it is essential, how much labour costs according to contractors’ price lists, and how the cost for a typical 5 m² bathroom compares with the overall renovation budget. All amounts are medians from public price lists and guides collected by indekscen.pl.

Is bathroom waterproofing worthwhile?

Bathroom waterproofing is worthwhile whenever you renovate and install new tiles, as labour costs only 51 ‑ 66 PLN/m² according to price lists, while repairing a leak means removing and relaying the tiles. Tiles and cement grout are not watertight: over the years, water penetrates the joints and reaches the plaster, screed or ceiling slab, and in a block of flats it can leak into the flat below.

The figures illustrate the risk best. Labour for waterproofing a 5 m² bathroom costs around PLN 700. According to sources, a complete renovation of a 5 to 7 m² bathroom, including materials, costs around PLN 21,800. By omitting waterproofing, you therefore save only a small part of the budget while risking having to repeat most of the renovation.

Waterproofing is also a warranty condition for many manufacturers’ systems, including adhesives, linear shower drains and tileable shower trays. Without it, making a claim is more difficult if anything starts to leak.

How much does waterproofing a 5 m² bathroom cost? An example

At the median labour rate, waterproofing a 5 m² bathroom costs around PLN 700 (typically PLN 610 ‑ 790) if you waterproof the floor and walls in the wet area, covering around 12 m² in total. We calculate the surface area as follows:

  • floor: 5 m²,
  • walls by the shower or bath up to a height of around 2 m: 5 to 6 m²,
  • strip along the walls by the floor in the rest of the bathroom (waterproofing turned up the walls): around 1 m².

Waterproofing the same bathroom in full, with all walls covered up to the ceiling, means an area of around 25 m² and labour costs of approximately PLN 1,500. Materials (liquid waterproofing membrane, tapes, corners, sealing collars and primer) are usually listed separately in the quotation.

Bathroom waterproofing: labour price per m² and reasons for the differences

According to 3 sources collected by indekscen.pl, labour for bathroom waterproofing costs from 30 PLN/m² to 100 PLN/m², with a median of 58 PLN/m². Details and quotations are available on the bathroom waterproofing page.

What causes this variation? The key factors are:

  1. What the price includes. Lower rates usually cover labour only, while higher rates include sealing strips, corners and pipe collars.
  2. Bathroom size. A small bathroom has many corners and pipe penetrations within a limited area, so the work takes longer per square metre.
  3. Material. Two-component liquid waterproofing membrane (a cement and dispersion-based compound) costs more to buy and requires more work than a single-component product.
  4. Region. Contractors charge higher rates in large cities.

Some construction guides quote lower rates for labour alone in a bathroom: in the data for the general waterproofing (water-resistant insulation) service, one option costs around 20 PLN/m². The difference depends on whether the contractor charges only for two coats of membrane or also includes tapes, primer and detail work. We discuss bathroom, balcony and foundation waterproofing prices in more detail in the article waterproofing price per m².

Should the entire bathroom be waterproofed?

Waterproofing does not need to cover the entire bathroom. As a minimum, the floor should be waterproofed with the membrane turned up the walls, along with the walls in the shower and bath areas. This is recommended for every renovation. The entire bathroom up to the ceiling is usually waterproofed when the shower is open (without an enclosure), the bathroom is small and water splashes onto every wall, or the walls are made of plasterboard.

Waterproofing is essential in the following places:

  • the entire bathroom floor, with the membrane turned up the walls by several centimetres,
  • walls by the shower and bath, at least up to the height of the shower head,
  • all corners, movement joints and pipe penetrations (using tapes and collars),
  • the area around a linear shower drain or floor drain.

Where water does not reach, such as the wall behind the washing machine or washbasin, primer under the adhesive is usually sufficient.

Can tiles be laid directly on waterproofing?

Tiles can be laid directly on under-tile waterproofing, as this is precisely its purpose: liquid waterproofing membrane forms a substrate for the adhesive. The condition is that you use an adhesive intended for the system (preferably from the same manufacturer) and wait until the final coat of membrane has dried in accordance with the product data sheet. The waterproofing should not be primed before applying adhesive unless the manufacturer states otherwise.

Labour for laying tiles on a waterproofed surface usually costs 105 ‑ 165 PLN/m² according to price lists. Some tilers include waterproofing in this rate, while others charge for it separately. When comparing quotations, check that both include the same work.

Bathroom waterproofing step by step: what the contractor should do

Proper bathroom waterproofing always involves the same stages, regardless of the material manufacturer:

  1. Preparing the substrate: the walls and floor must be level, dry and free of dust, and the slope towards the drain must already be formed.
  2. Priming with the product recommended by the membrane manufacturer.
  3. Applying tapes and corners where the walls meet the floor and each other, with collars around pipes and the drain.
  4. Applying the first coat of liquid membrane with a brush or roller.
  5. Applying the second coat once the first has dried, usually at right angles to it to avoid any gaps.
  6. Inspection: checking the coating thickness, continuity at the corners and the seal around the drain. For a walk-in shower, it is worth requesting a water test before the tiles are laid.

A walk-in shower also requires linear drain installation (median PLN 425) and forming a slope towards the drain, costing around PLN 550. If you choose an enclosure with a shower tray, see the article removing and installing a shower enclosure.

What should you ask the contractor before waterproofing?

  • Does the price per m² include materials, or labour only? Which system will be used (manufacturer and type of membrane)?
  • Which surfaces will be waterproofed: only the shower area, the floor with the membrane turned up the walls, or the entire bathroom?
  • Are tapes, corners and collars included in the price, or charged separately per item?
  • How many coats will be applied and how thick will they be, and can you inspect the waterproofing before the tiles are laid?
  • Who is responsible for any leaks, and what warranty is provided for all the bathroom work?

If you are still planning the bathroom layout, bathroom design costs around PLN 525 according to price lists and will immediately show which walls are within the wet area. A related option is a tile-free finish, described in the article microcement in the bathroom. You can find more finishing services in the renovation and finishing category.
