Microcement in the bathroom creates a seamless surface without grout lines: the floor, walls and even the basin or shower tray can look like a single cast piece. This effect comes at a price, and not only when buying the material. Below, we check how much microcement costs per square metre, calculate the cost for an example bathroom and compare microcement with tiles and resin. The figures are medians from public contractor price lists and finishing guides.

How much does microcement in the bathroom cost per m²?

Microcement in the bathroom, including materials and labour, has a median cost of 375 PLN/m², and half of the collected prices fall within the range of 330 ‑ 435 PLN/m². According to 4 price lists and guides collected by indekscen.pl, the cheapest quotes start at 250 PLN/m², while the most expensive reach 650 PLN/m².

The price per m² of microcement depends mainly on:

  1. The size of the area. Large areas are noticeably cheaper per m² because the contractor can buy materials at a discount; a bathroom is usually a small area, so the price is closer to the upper end of the range.
  2. The condition of the substrate. A weak or cracked substrate needs to be reinforced, adding another item to the estimate.
  3. The finish. A smooth, uniform surface is cheaper than a marbled or distressed effect.
  4. The scope. A floor is one thing, but shower walls, a bath surround and a vanity top involve a lot of manual work around corners.
  5. Whether the price includes materials. Some contractors quote labour only, so always ask for the price including materials.

How much does a microcement bathroom cost?

A microcement bathroom costs about PLN 7,500 at the median for 20 m² of surface area, typically PLN 6,600 ‑ 8,700. This is the cost for a small bathroom of about 5 m², where microcement covers the floor and the walls in the shower and basin areas. For a 5 m² floor alone, the cost falls to about PLN 1,900.

Item for approx. 20 m² of surface area Cost at the median Typical range
Microcement including materials and labour PLN 7,500 PLN 6,600 ‑ 8,700
Laying tiles, labour only PLN 2,600 PLN 2,100 ‑ 3,300
Waterproofing, labour only (under either finish) PLN 1,200 PLN 1,000 ‑ 1,300

Remember that the tile row covers labour only: you also need to add the cost of tiles, adhesive and grout. Waterproofing is required in both cases, so it does not affect the comparison. A bathroom also requires plumbing and electrical work, sanitary fixtures and taps, which we discuss in the article how much does renovating a flat cost. According to price lists, a complete bathroom renovation including materials costs about 4,900 PLN/m²; see bathroom renovation for details.

Is microcement more expensive than tiles?

Microcement is usually more expensive than tiles: it costs 375 PLN/m² including materials, while labour for laying tiles costs 130 PLN/m², plus the price of the tiles. The difference depends on the tiles selected. Microcement is clearly more expensive than inexpensive porcelain tiles, but the difference is smaller with premium large-format tiles because laying laying tiles large-format tiles also costs more.

One advantage of microcement is that stable old tiles do not need to be removed: after preparation, it can be applied over the existing surface. This saves the cost of removing the tiles, disposing of rubble and some preparation work. Tiles have the advantages of scratch resistance and allowing individual damaged tiles to be replaced.

Which is better: microcement or resin?

Microcement is better for walls and bathrooms, while resin is mainly suitable for floors and is cheaper: resin flooring including materials usually costs 110 ‑ 225 PLN/m², compared with 330 ‑ 435 PLN/m² for microcement. Resin forms a smooth, hard coating resistant to abrasion and chemicals, which is why it is used in garages, workshops and modern living rooms. Microcement has a more matt, mineral appearance, can be applied to walls, furniture and shower trays, and copes better with substrate movement.

Microcement for floors and walls: does the price differ?

Price lists show similar costs for microcement on floors and walls, usually 330 ‑ 435 PLN/m², but walls with numerous corners, recesses and shelves require more work and cost more per m². Floors, meanwhile, need a stronger protective lacquer because they are more exposed to abrasion. Stairs are the most expensive and are priced per step, at about PLN 405.

Microcement works well in a shower if it has waterproofing underneath and a watertight lacquer coating on top. A walk-in shower with a linear drain is one of the most common uses of microcement in the bathroom: the floor flows seamlessly into the shower area, without thresholds or grout lines where limescale can collect. There is one requirement: a suitable fall towards the drain, planned when the screed is laid, because microcement is thin and will not correct defects in the substrate.

What surfaces can microcement be applied to?

Microcement can be applied to stable substrates: cement screed, concrete, plaster, plasterboard and old tiles, provided they are firmly bonded to the substrate. It is not suitable for a substrate that moves or cracks, because cracks will spread through the thin microcement layer. A new screed must first be allowed to cure; we discuss screed costs in the article concrete screed: labour price excluding materials. In bathroom wet zones, waterproofing is installed under the microcement, with labour usually costing 51 ‑ 66 PLN/m² (details: bathroom waterproofing).

What are the disadvantages of microcement?

The main disadvantages of microcement are its high price (375 PLN/m² including materials), sensitivity to installation errors and the need to renew the protective lacquer. In addition:

  • Scratches. Microcement is hard, but sharp objects and grit under shoes can leave marks on the floor.
  • Cracking on a weak substrate. Cutting costs on substrate preparation can cause problems after just a few months.
  • Few experienced contractors. The result depends more on the contractor’s skill than it does with tiles.
  • Difficult local repairs. A repair is rarely invisible, and a larger section often needs to be refinished.
  • Cleaning products. Strong cleaning agents can damage the lacquer; mild products are required.

What should you ask a microcement contractor?

  • Does the price include materials, and from which manufacturer, or is it labour only?
  • How many layers of microcement and lacquer will be applied, and how long must they dry before the bathroom can be used?
  • Who will prepare the substrate, and is reinforcement included in the price?
  • Will they install waterproofing in the shower area, and how will they seal the linear drain?
  • Can they show completed projects from several years ago, rather than only recent photos?
