A colonoscopy is a procedure that many people put off, partly because they are unsure about the cost and waiting time. We have collected prices from private facility price lists, compared procedures without anaesthesia and under general anaesthesia, included gastroscopy and biopsy examination, and explained when a colonoscopy can be performed free of charge. This article covers costs; decisions about indications and preparation are made by a doctor.

How much does a private colonoscopy cost?

A private diagnostic colonoscopy without anaesthesia or biopsy sampling most often costs PLN 625, based on 4 facility price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within PLN 590 ‑ 665, with the cheapest offers starting at PLN 400 and the most expensive reaching PLN 800.

How much does a colonoscopy with anaesthesia cost?

A private colonoscopy under general anaesthesia costs around PLN 1,050, considerably more than a procedure without anaesthesia at PLN 625. The difference covers the anaesthetist’s work, medication and post-procedure observation. Some facilities quote a single price for a procedure under anaesthesia, while others charge for the anaesthesia separately.

How long does a colonoscopy take, and does it hurt?

A colonoscopy usually takes between 15 and 40 minutes, and under general anaesthesia the patient does not feel the procedure. Without anaesthesia, the examination can be uncomfortable, mainly because air is introduced into the bowel. For this reason, many people pay extra for anaesthesia, bringing the total cost of the procedure to around PLN 1,050. You should also allow time for preparation at the facility and recovery afterwards.

Preparing the bowel the day before takes the most time. The facility provides instructions on diet and the bowel-cleansing preparation. The preparation is purchased from a pharmacy and is not included in the procedure price.

Who is eligible for a free colonoscopy?

A free colonoscopy without a referral is available to people who meet the criteria of the NFZ colorectal cancer screening programme. According to the information collected in the index, this includes people aged 50 to 65, as well as those aged 40 to 49 if a close relative has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer. The programme criteria may change, so check the current conditions on the NFZ website or with your GP.

Outside the programme, an NFZ-funded colonoscopy requires a doctor’s referral. The procedure is then free, but there is usually a wait for an appointment. Privately, you will pay around PLN 625, and a referral is usually not required.

Private colonoscopy or NFZ-funded procedure?

An NFZ-funded colonoscopy is free, while a private procedure usually costs PLN 590 ‑ 665, so the main differences are waiting time and convenience. Here is a comparison of both options:

Issue Private NFZ
Procedure cost PLN 590 ‑ 665 free
General anaesthesia around PLN 1,050 in total depends on the facility and clinical indications
Referral usually not required required outside the screening programme
Appointment usually available quickly depends on the facility’s waiting list

If your doctor considers the procedure urgent, ask about an urgent NFZ referral before deciding to pay privately.

What is not included in the colonoscopy price?

In addition to the procedure itself, you need to allow for the cost of a bowel-cleansing preparation from a pharmacy, possible examination of biopsy samples at around PLN 99 per specimen, and a medical consultation if required by the facility. General anaesthesia also usually means taking a day off work and arranging transport, as you must not drive after the procedure.

How often should you have a colonoscopy?

Following a normal result, a colonoscopy under the screening programme is usually repeated after around 10 years, but the interval is determined by a doctor based on the result, any polyps removed and family history. People who have had polyps removed or who have bowel conditions are examined more frequently. If you have regular check-ups, it is worth remembering that each subsequent private procedure will again cost around PLN 590 ‑ 665, while an NFZ-funded follow-up examination is free with a referral.

Gastroscopy and colonoscopy: how much do they cost together?

A private diagnostic gastroscopy costs around PLN 460 (typically PLN 450 ‑ 550), while a colonoscopy costs around PLN 625. When a doctor orders both examinations, many facilities perform them during a single visit under the same anaesthetic and offer a package. It is worth comparing the package with the combined price of separate procedures at the same facility, as the package is not always cheaper. You can find detailed prices on the gastroscopy page.

What affects the price of a colonoscopy?

The price of a colonoscopy depends primarily on the anaesthesia and what the doctor does during the procedure. Factors found in facility price lists include:

  1. Type of anaesthesia. A procedure without anaesthesia is the cheapest, while general anaesthesia increases the price to around PLN 1,050.
  2. Taking biopsy samples. Each sample is sent for histopathological examination, which costs around PLN 99 per specimen if the facility does not include it in the price.
  3. Polyp removal. A polypectomy is a procedure for which facilities charge separately.
  4. City and facility. Large endoscopy centres in major cities usually have higher price lists than clinics in smaller towns.
  5. Consultation. Some facilities require an appointment with a gastroenterologist before the procedure or a follow-up discussion of the results.

How can you avoid overpaying for a colonoscopy?

  • Check whether you qualify for the NFZ programme. If you do, the procedure is free.
  • Ask about the full cost. Request separate prices for the procedure, anaesthesia, biopsy sampling and histopathological examination.
  • Compare packages. A package with gastroscopy is only good value if you need both examinations.
  • Ask about the results. Histopathology results usually take longer than the colonoscopy report itself.

Before the procedure, your doctor may order basic blood tests. Their prices are covered in our article full blood count with differential: price. We do not yet have local colonoscopy medians for individual cities, so we provide the national median.
