How much does 1 hour in a sauna cost?

An hour in a public sauna usually costs PLN 53 ‑ 58, while the median from 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl is PLN 55. A standard ticket usually includes between one and one and a half hours in the sauna area, with a dry sauna, steam room, sometimes an infrared sauna and a relaxation area. How much do different sauna options cost?

The cost of using a sauna depends primarily on whether you choose a shared area or a private VIP sauna. Here is a comparison of the options based on public price lists:

Option Price Suitable for
Admission to the sauna area, approx. 1 to 1.5 hours PLN 53 ‑ 58 single admission, shared area
Private VIP sauna around PLN 300 a couple or group, without other guests
Once a week for a month around PLN 220 regular sauna use
Twice a week for a month around PLN 440 frequent sauna use
Once a week for a year around PLN 2,900 comparison with your own sauna

A VIP sauna makes sense when several people attend: dividing the hire price between the group can bring the cost close to that of several tickets to the shared area, while providing privacy and allowing you to set your own pace.

What determines the sauna admission price?

The sauna admission price mainly depends on the length of the visit, the time of day and the standard of the facility. The most important factors are:

  1. Length of visit. Tickets for one, two or three hours, or for the whole day, have different prices, and extra charges for overstaying may be added every few minutes.
  2. Day of the week and time. Evenings and weekends are more expensive than weekday mornings.
  3. Standard of the facility. Large sauna complexes offering guided sessions and ceremonies cost more than a small poolside sauna.
  4. City and individual facility. Prices are usually higher in large cities.
  5. Extras. Towels, bathrobes, flip-flops and aromatherapy sessions may be charged separately.

How much does a sauna for two cost?

A sauna visit for two in a shared area simply costs the price of two tickets, around PLN 110 for a visit lasting between one and one and a half hours. A private VIP sauna for a couple costs around PLN 300, so it is noticeably more expensive, but the price usually includes more time, a separate room and often a relaxation area reserved for the guests. Spa facilities also sell gift or anniversary vouchers combining a sauna, massage and dinner. Before purchasing one, check exactly what the package includes and when it expires.

Dry, steam or infrared sauna: does the price differ?

At public facilities, the ticket price does not usually depend on the type of sauna, as one ticket covers the whole area: a Finnish sauna (dry sauna), steam room and often an infrared sauna. Price differences result from the length of the visit and the standard of the facility, rather than the particular sauna you use.

The type of sauna matters when building your own: a Finnish sauna with a wood-burning or electric heater, a steam room with a steam generator and an infrared sauna differ in purchase and installation costs, as well as electricity consumption. A Finnish sauna usually operates at between 80 and 100 degrees with low humidity, a steam room at around 40 to 50 degrees with very high humidity, while an infrared sauna heats the body with radiation at an even lower air temperature.

How many times a week should you use a sauna and how much does it cost?

Most people use a sauna once or twice a week, and the cost of tickets rises in direct proportion to the number of visits: once a week costs around PLN 220 per month, while twice a week costs around PLN 440. A single visit usually consists of two or three sessions lasting from a few to around a dozen minutes, with cooling breaks in between, so a ticket for one to one and a half hours is sufficient for a full cycle. Longer tickets are worthwhile only if you want to rest in the relaxation area between sessions.

Is having your own sauna worthwhile?

Having your own sauna only pays off financially if you use it very regularly over many years. A home sauna, meaning sauna construction, usually costs PLN 8,750 ‑ 13,800 (median PLN 10,000), while a ready-made self-assembly cabin without a heater costs around PLN 9,250. You must also add the cost of the heater, electrical installation and electricity used each time.

For comparison, using a public sauna once a week costs around PLN 2,900 per year for one person. For two people in the household making two visits a week, ticket costs are four times higher, allowing a private sauna to pay for itself more quickly. We cover the cost of building a sauna in the garden or at home in more detail in the article building a garden sauna.

Sauna, massage or gym: how much does each cost?

A sauna is one of the less expensive forms of relaxation at spa facilities, as admission to the sauna area costs several times less than a massage. These are the median prices from public price lists:

If you go to the gym, check whether the club includes sauna access in the membership: a monthly membership usually costs 140 ‑ 180 PLN/month, and some clubs include the sauna. Read more about memberships in the article annual gym membership and about massages in how much does an hour-long massage cost.

What are the disadvantages of a sauna?

The main disadvantages of a sauna are the strain that high temperatures place on the cardiovascular system, the risk of dehydration and contraindications affecting some people. Sauna use is not recommended in cases including fever, acute infections, certain heart conditions and blood pressure disorders, or during pregnancy without a doctor’s approval. You should never use a sauna after drinking alcohol.

Ask your doctor whether a sauna is suitable if you have Hashimoto’s disease, a thyroid disorder or sinus problems: they know your test results and the medication you take. Drink water in the sauna, start with shorter sessions and leave if you feel unwell.

How can you pay less for a sauna?

  • Choose weekday admission, especially before noon, when facilities offer lower prices.
  • Buy passes or multi-visit tickets if the facility offers them: the price per visit is usually lower.
  • Bring your own towel, sauna sheet and flip-flops to avoid paying hire charges.
  • Keep track of your visit time. Overstay charges can increase your bill.
  • Check for a gym or swimming pool membership that includes sauna access if you already use these facilities.
