A sauna at home is tempting because, after several dozen visits to a public facility, you start wondering how much your own would cost. However, prices online vary widely: some quote the cost of a ready-made cabin without a heater, while others quote a bespoke garden sauna with a terrace and electrical connection. Below, we separate these options, show what is usually excluded from the price, and calculate when owning a sauna pays for itself compared with buying tickets. The figures are medians from public price lists and building guides collected in the price index.
How much does it cost to build a garden sauna?
According to price lists, building a bespoke garden sauna costs around 5,500 PLN/m² of sauna floor area. A 4 m² sauna therefore costs four times this rate, plus the heater, electricity supply and preparation of the ground beneath the building.
A garden sauna is a separate small building: it needs pad foundations or a foundation slab, insulated walls, a roof with a covering, and an external door. Barrel-shaped saunas are popular because their thick-timber construction is simple and quick to assemble, as are cabin-style saunas with a changing room. The larger the relaxation area outside the sauna room itself, the higher the bill.
Planning a garden sauna should begin with its location: close to the house (for a shorter power cable and easy access in winter), on level ground, away from the plot boundary and trees that shed leaves onto the roof. A well-planned location can reduce the cost of the base and electrical connection more than choosing cheaper timber.

The options use different units: garden and indoor saunas are priced per square metre, while a ready-made cabin is priced as a complete unit. A full comparison with quotations from the sources is available at sauna construction.
How much does it cost to build a sauna at home?
According to price lists, building a bespoke sauna at home costs around 7,000 PLN/m², which is more per square metre than a garden sauna. The higher rate results from the need to adapt the sauna to an existing room, including a vapour barrier, ventilation, suitable flooring, and often alterations to installations in the bathroom or basement.
A cheaper way to have a sauna at home is a ready-made self-assembly cabin: without a heater, it costs around PLN 9,250. The cabin has fixed dimensions, so you need to find a suitable place for it, but there is no need for a bespoke design or on-site joinery. The median across all sources for a basic home sauna is PLN 10,000, typically PLN 8,750 ‑ 13,800; the most expensive projects in the sources reach PLN 25,000.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |

What determines the cost of building a sauna?
The cost of building a sauna depends primarily on its floor area, the material used for the panelling, and the type of heater. The factors, starting with the most important, are:
- Size and layout. Every additional square metre means more panelling, insulation and benches, as well as a larger heater. A sauna for 2 to 3 people costs much less than a family sauna with a changing room.
- Garden or indoor sauna. An indoor sauna costs more per square metre (7,000 PLN/m² compared with 5,500 PLN/m² for a garden sauna), but a garden sauna needs foundations and an electricity supply running across the plot.
- Timber. Canadian cedar costs several times more than Scandinavian spruce. Spruce and aspen are standard choices for home saunas; cedar smells pleasant and greys more slowly, but increases the cost of the panelling.
- Heater. A basic electric heater is the cheapest, one with a control panel costs more, and a wood-burning heater is the most expensive. A steam sauna requires a steam generator instead of a conventional heater.
- Extras. LED lighting, an audio system, chromotherapy and a touchscreen panel are not necessary for the sauna to work, but they can noticeably increase the bill.
- Ready-made cabin or bespoke construction. A cabin is cheaper and quicker, while a bespoke sauna makes better use of the available space.
Is it worth building a sauna yourself?
Building a sauna yourself is most worthwhile with a ready-made cabin, which costs around PLN 9,250 without a heater and is designed for assembly by a non-professional. When building a sauna from scratch, you save on labour, but risk making mistakes with the vapour barrier and ventilation, which can result in damp and mould inside the walls after a few seasons.
There is one thing you should not do yourself: connect the electric heater. A sauna heater needs a separate circuit with cables of the correct size and suitable protection, and it should be connected by a qualified electrician. According to price lists, an electrical point costs around PLN 170, while the hourly rate for a specialist electrician is around 120 PLN/h. We cover the cost of electrical work in more detail in the article electrical installation in a house, with further details available at electrical installation.
Before building a garden sauna, check with the county office whether a detached building of the planned size requires notification. The rules depend on the size and intended use of the building, and for a sauna with an electrical installation, it is better to ask before buying than afterwards.
How much does a sauna cost to run and how much electricity does it use?
The electricity used by an electric sauna is the heater’s power multiplied by its operating time: a heater rated at several kilowatts usually heats the sauna for 30 to 60 minutes, then switches on and off to maintain the temperature. You can calculate the cost of one session by multiplying the kilowatt-hours used by the electricity price under your tariff. Energy prices are not included in our index, so we do not provide a cost per session.
Consumption is affected by the size of the cabin (the heater is selected according to its volume), the insulation of the walls and door, the outdoor temperature (a garden sauna takes longer to heat in winter), and whether you heat it once a week or every day. There are also minor maintenance expenses: heater stones replaced every few years, bench oil, a bucket and ladle, and fragrance oils.
Your own sauna or tickets to a public sauna?
According to price lists, a single visit to a public sauna costs around PLN 55, so one hundred visits cost around PLN 5,500. It is worth comparing this figure with the median cost of building a basic home sauna, PLN 10,000, plus the heater, electricity supply and connection.
If you visit a sauna once a month, your own sauna takes many years to pay for itself and is more of a convenience than a saving. With two or three visits a week for the whole family, the calculation looks very different: tickets for several people can quickly exceed the construction cost. Ticket prices are detailed at sauna admission (single ticket), while a VIP sauna at a public facility costs around PLN 300.
A garden sauna is often planned together with a terrace or summer house. We discuss the costs of these projects in the articles which type of terrace is the cheapest and building a year-round summer house. You can find other services for homes and plots in the house construction category.
What should you ask a sauna contractor?
- Does the price include the heater, and if so, what kind (output, controls, type)?
- Who carries out the electrical connection, and is it included in the price?
- What timber are the panelling and benches made from, and how is the vapour barrier installed?
- How are the supply and extract ventilation arranged?
- Does the price include the foundations, transport and installation of the garden sauna on the plot?
- What warranty is provided for the structure and separately for the heater?
