At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- A panel of several tumour markers costs around PLN 340 at a private laboratory.
- An individual blood tumour marker test usually costs PLN 79 ‑ 92, with the cheapest options starting at PLN 40.
- A private PSA test, which measures a prostate marker, typically costs PLN 43 ‑ 61.
- The median price of an AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) test is PLN 40, based on 5 facility price lists collected by indekscen.pl.
- BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic testing usually costs PLN 565 ‑ 640 and is not a tumour marker test, but a test for inherited risk.

Tumour marker tests are among the most frequently ordered tests people arrange on their own, but laboratory price lists can be misleading: you may see a price for one marker, a panel of five or a panel with a consultation. Below, we compare median prices from public laboratory and facility price lists, separately for individual markers, panels and related tests, making it easy to compare offers.
How much does a tumour marker panel cost?
A panel of several tumour markers costs around PLN 340 at a private laboratory. Such a panel usually includes three to six tests performed on a single blood sample, selected according to sex or organ, for example a women’s panel with CA 125 and CA 15-3 or a men’s panel with PSA. You pay for the blood draw once, so a panel costs less than ordering the same markers individually.
For comparison, an individual tumour marker tests has a median price of PLN 89 per marker, based on 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Five markers purchased separately would cost around PLN 450, considerably more than a panel.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tumour marker tests | PLN 89 | PLN 79 ‑ 92 | 3 |
| PSA test (prostate marker) | PLN 56.05 | PLN 43 ‑ 61 | 3 |
| AFP test (alpha-fetoprotein) | PLN 40 | PLN 39 ‑ 46 | 5 |
| Pancreatic tests | PLN 91 | PLN 61 ‑ 145 | 4 |
| Calcitonin test | PLN 60 | PLN 60 ‑ 84 | 5 |
| BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene test | PLN 590 | PLN 565 ‑ 640 | 3 |

How much do individual blood tumour marker tests cost?
Individual blood tumour marker tests cost from tens of PLN to around PLN 100-200, depending on the marker and laboratory. Here is a comparison of those for which we have separate data:
| Marker or test | Associated with | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Individual marker (e.g. CA 125, CEA, CA 15-3) | ovary, bowel, breast | PLN 79 ‑ 92 |
| Total PSA | prostate | PLN 43 ‑ 61 |
| AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) | liver, testicles, ovaries | PLN 39 ‑ 46 |
| Pancreatic tests, including CA 19-9 | pancreas, gastrointestinal tract | PLN 61 ‑ 145 |
| Calcitonin | thyroid (medullary cancer) | PLN 60 ‑ 84 |
| Panel of several markers | depends on its contents | around PLN 340 |
| BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes | inherited risk of breast and ovarian cancer | PLN 565 ‑ 640 |
The cheapest tests in this comparison are aFP test (alpha-fetoprotein) (median PLN 40) and pSA test (prostate marker) (median PLN 56.05). Markers with broader applications, such as CA 125, cost closer to the median of PLN 89. pancreatic tests has the widest price range: laboratories use this name for various tests, from CA 19-9 alone to antibody tests and panels, so prices range from PLN 43.48 to PLN 220.
How much does a women’s tumour marker panel cost?
A women’s tumour marker panel usually costs about the same as other panels, around PLN 340. It most commonly includes CA 125 (ovary), CA 15-3 (breast), CEA (bowel) and sometimes HE4 or AFP. Some laboratories add the ROMA score, which combines CA 125 and HE4 results.
It is worth remembering that a blood panel does not replace screening: for breasts, the main test is mammography (median private price PLN 150, while it is free for women in specified age groups under the NFZ screening programme). Read more in our article private mammography or through the NFZ.
Can you have tumour marker tests without a referral?
Yes, you can have private tumour marker tests without a referral: simply pay at a blood collection centre, usually PLN 79 ‑ 92 per marker. Under the NFZ, testing is free but requires a doctor’s referral and medical indications, such as follow-up after cancer treatment or concerning symptoms.
A private test without a referral has one drawback: you receive the result without an interpretation. The test price does not include a medical consultation, and a result above the normal range is not a diagnosis. Even if you arrange the test yourself, it is therefore advisable to have a doctor review the result.
Can tumour markers detect cancer?
Tumour markers alone cannot confirm or rule out cancer. An elevated marker may have a non-cancerous cause, such as inflammation, liver disease, pregnancy or an enlarged prostate, while a normal result does not guarantee good health. Doctors mainly use markers to monitor treatment and detect recurrence in people who have undergone therapy, and less commonly for screening healthy people.
If your result is abnormal, ask a doctor what to do next: they will usually order a repeat test or diagnostic imaging. An initial assessment of abnormalities can be provided by abdominal ultrasound (median PLN 200), while PET computed tomography can assess the extent of disease in detail. We discuss its costs in the article private PET CT scan. A definitive diagnosis is provided by histopathological examination of a tissue sample.
How long does it take to receive tumour marker results?
Results for most tumour markers take between one and several working days. Laboratories usually provide results for common tests, such as PSA, within one working day. Tests performed less frequently or sent to a specialist laboratory take longer.
Genetic tests have a completely different turnaround time: BRCA1 and BRCA2 results take several weeks, around 22 working days according to one price list. This is because genetic testing analyses DNA rather than the concentration of a protein in the blood.
How does a tumour marker differ from a BRCA genetic test?
A tumour marker test measures the current concentration of a substance in the blood, while a BRCA1 and BRCA2 test checks whether you have inherited a mutation that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer. bRCA1 and BRCA2 gene test typically costs PLN 565 ‑ 640 and is performed once in a lifetime. A marker test is repeated regularly if recommended by a doctor.
Differences in BRCA prices reflect the scope of testing: the cheapest options cover the mutations most common in the Polish population, while more expensive tests use an extended panel. For people with a family history of cancer, genetic testing may be available free of charge from genetic clinics under the NFZ, so it is worth asking about this first.
What affects the price of tumour marker tests?
The price of tumour marker tests primarily depends on which marker you choose and whether you purchase it as part of a panel. Other factors include:
- Type of marker. Simple tests (AFP, PSA) are cheaper than tests for less commonly measured markers.
- Panel or individual test. A panel using one blood draw costs less than the combined price of markers purchased separately.
- Laboratory and blood collection centre. The same chain may charge different prices at different locations, while hospital price lists differ from those of private facilities.
- Referral. With a referral and medical indications, the test is free under the NFZ.
- Extras. Home blood collection, a consultation about the result and a repeat test are separate costs.
How can you avoid overpaying for tumour marker tests?
- Compare the contents of the panel, not just the price. Two women’s panels offered by different chains may include different markers.
- Do not order everything at once without good reason. A doctor selects a marker based on symptoms or medical history, and unnecessary above-normal results are more likely to cause anxiety than provide answers.
- Check whether you are eligible for testing under the NFZ. During follow-up after cancer treatment, the doctor in charge orders marker tests.
- Combine the blood draw with basic tests. full blood count costs only around PLN 25 extra, and other parameters can help the doctor assess the result. We discuss the extended version in our article full blood count with differential.
