The difference is due to the work on the unit: the plumber must secure it to the wall, level it, cut openings for the trap and connections in the back panel, and only then fit the washbasin and connect the water supply.

How much does it cost to install a wall-mounted, countertop or inset washbasin?

Installing a countertop or inset washbasin is the cheapest option and usually falls in the lower part of the PLN 175 ‑ 245 range. The washbasin sits on an existing worktop or unit, so the plumber does not need to anchor it to the wall. A countertop washbasin does, however, require a taller tap or a wall-mounted tap, which may affect the cost of the fittings.

Installing a wall-mounted, wall-hung or undermount washbasin is more expensive and approaches the upper end of the price range, up to PLN 350. The wall must be checked for adequate load-bearing capacity, while plasterboard walls require reinforcement or a support frame.

How much does it cost to install a washbasin with a wall-mounted vanity unit?

Installing a washbasin with a wall-mounted vanity unit usually costs about PLN 415 in labour, the same as a set with a floor-standing unit, but it requires a sturdy wall. A wall-mounted unit, together with the washbasin and water in the trap, is quite heavy, so it is secured with anchors to a masonry wall or to reinforcement within a partition wall.

Before installation, check the height of the water and waste connections. If the waste pipe is too low, it may obstruct a drawer in the unit, requiring the pipe to be altered or a unit with a cut-out to be selected. What increases the price of washbasin installation?

The price of washbasin installation is increased mainly by work that is not visible in the shop photographs. According to the price lists used to calculate the median, the factors with the greatest impact are:

• Type of washbasin. Countertop and inset washbasins are cheaper to install, while wall-hung and undermount models cost more.
• Vanity unit. A set with a vanity unit costs about PLN 415, compared with PLN 215 for the washbasin alone.
• Alterations to connections. Moving the water supply or waste pipe is a separate job, often involving removing tiles and repairing them afterwards.
• Replacing the trap and tap. If the existing fittings are retained but do not fit the new washbasin, extra parts and labour are required.
• City and travel. Plumbers’ rates are higher in large cities, while companies charge extra for long journeys.

When comparing quotes, therefore, ask for an itemised price covering the washbasin, vanity unit, tap, materials and travel. Only then can you see which quote is genuinely cheaper.

How can you prepare for installation to pay less?

1. Buy everything before the visit. The washbasin, vanity unit, tap, trap, two hoses and angle valves. One missing part means a second visit.
2. Assemble the unit yourself. If the furniture comes flat-packed and the plumber charges by time, assembling the carcass yourself shortens the job.
3. Check the height of the connections. Compare it with the unit’s technical drawing to avoid alterations.
4. Combine jobs. Having the washbasin, tap and toilet installed in one job means a single call-out and often a lower price for each item.
