A handyman handles all the jobs that are too small to be worth giving to a renovation company: a hanging light, a leaking tap, a flat-pack cabinet or a window blind. The difficulty with pricing is that everyone charges differently: some by the task, others by the hour and others for the entire visit. We collected public price lists from handymen and tradespeople offering individual jobs, so you can see how much to pay for a specific task.

How much does a handyman charge per hour?

Handymen rarely quote a single hourly rate: most price lists break the service down into individual tasks, with a typical task costing PLN 94 ‑ 170. Some companies charge for a visit of a set duration, and these are the most expensive offers, at up to PLN 298 per visit. By comparison, a specialist electrician charges about 120 PLN/h.

When paying by the hour, ask when the clock starts, whether it is upon arrival at the flat or when the tradesperson leaves their base, whether travel is charged separately and whether there is a minimum call-out fee. If you have several minor jobs, paying per visit can be better value than paying separately for each task.

Is hiring a handyman cost-effective?

A handyman is cost-effective when you have several minor jobs in different fields to complete at once: one visit instead of three tradespeople saves on travel and minimum fees. For five minor jobs at the median price of PLN 115, the bill is about PLN 580, while separate visits from a plumber and an electrician can cost a similar amount for just one or two jobs.

A handyman cannot replace a specialist where qualifications or specialist tools are required:

  1. New electrical circuits and points. The median cost of an electrical point installed by an electrician is PLN 170, and work on electrical installations requires appropriate qualifications. Read more in the article electrical installation in a house: cost.
  2. Alterations to water and drainage systems. A new plumbing point is a job for a plumber.
  3. Gas. All work on gas installations requires gas qualifications.
  4. Major renovations. For a bathroom or an entire flat, hiring a renovation team works out cheaper. We cover the costs in the article how much does renovating a flat cost.

What jobs does a handyman do and how much do they cost?

A handyman carries out minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry and finishing work that does not require a team or a plan. The typical scope includes installation, replacement and adjustment, rather than building something from scratch. Below are the most common jobs and how they are usually priced.

  • Furniture assembly. Assembling flat-pack furniture most often costs PLN 125, a desk about PLN 65, and fitting a kitchen cabinet about PLN 270. Details are available on the furniture assembly page.
  • Lighting. Installing a light, wall light or chandelier usually falls within the rate for a minor job, which is PLN 94 ‑ 170 per item. A heavy chandelier or high ceiling increases the price.
  • Taps and mixers. Installing an exposed tap most often costs PLN 100, while installing a concealed tap built into the wall costs about PLN 635, as this is a job for a plumber. Sources are available on the tap installation page.
  • Blinds and pleated blinds. The median cost of installing an internal blind is PLN 120, a pleated blind costs about PLN 150, and an external roller shutter about PLN 300. Read more on the blind installation page.
  • Doors, locks and handles. Replacing a lock or cylinder most often costs PLN 175, while installing an internal door with a frame costs PLN 320. For door-related work, many handymen will refer you to a carpenter or specialist installer.
  • Sockets and switches. Replacing an electrical socket most often costs PLN 125. Replacing a fitting with an identical one is a minor job, but installing a new point is a job for an electrician. Details: electrical socket replacement.

A local handyman will usually complete most of these jobs during a single visit, so you save the most by making a list of tasks.

Differences between cities are substantial because local price lists cover different tasks. In large cities, tradespeople are more likely to add travel and parking charges, while lower rates are easier to find in smaller localities.

What are you paying a handyman for, and what affects the price?

The price of a handyman depends mainly on the type of task and how it is charged: per item, per metre, per hour or for the entire visit. Installing a light, cabinet and tap involves different rates, while having several jobs completed during one visit usually reduces the price of each one.

What increases the bill:

  • Travel. Some tradespeople charge separately for it, while others include it in the minimum fee.
  • Materials. Wall plugs, screws, silicone, seals and connectors are usually added to the labour cost.
  • Difficult surfaces. Drilling into concrete, porcelain tiles or stone takes longer and wears out drill bits.
  • Timing. An evening or weekend visit, or a same-day booking, may cost more.
  • Unexpected problems. A rusted valve, rotten door frame or old electrical back box can turn a straightforward replacement into a longer repair.

How can you find a good handyman and avoid overpaying?

The most reliable approach is to send a list of jobs with photographs and ask for a separate price for each item. This makes it easy to compare two quotes and check whether the rates fall within the typical range of PLN 94 ‑ 170 for a minor task.

Before commissioning the work, ask:

  • whether the price includes travel and installation materials,
  • whether there is a minimum call-out fee,
  • whether the tradesperson has their own tools (hammer drill, laser level),
  • whether they provide a guarantee for the work and issue a bill.
