Third-party liability insurance is the only type of car insurance you cannot do without: it is compulsory for every registered car, even one kept in a garage. Yet the same policy can cost one driver several times more than another, even for an identical car. We collected average premiums from insurance comparisons and guides to show how much the cheapest third-party liability insurance costs, who pays the most and what you can do to pay less.

How much does the cheapest car third-party liability insurance cost?

The cheapest third-party liability insurance for a passenger car in the comparisons collected costs from 400 PLN/year per year. These premiums are available to experienced drivers (usually aged 35 to 60) with a long claim-free driving history, who live in a small town or village and own a small car. The average policy costs 650 PLN/year, according to 5 sources collected by indekscen.pl, while the most expensive examples for experienced drivers reach 900 PLN/year.

Comparison sites usually show a single calculation or an advertised price ‘from’. We compare medians from several sources and options for different drivers, with details and quotations available on the third-party car insurance (OC) page.

How much does car third-party liability insurance cost without a no-claims discount?

Third-party liability insurance without a no-claims discount, meaning for a driver with no insurance history, usually costs about 1,950 PLN/year per year. This is what mainly young drivers aged 18 to 25 pay when taking out a policy in their own name for the first time. It is several times more than the average premium (650 PLN/year).

The no-claims discount increases with every claim-free year, while each third-party liability claim sets the driver back by several levels. This is why the first few years behind the wheel are the most expensive, with subsequent years becoming noticeably cheaper. We explain how much it costs to obtain a licence in the article how much does a driving licence cost.

What determines the price of third-party liability insurance?

The third-party liability insurance premium depends on several factors, each carrying a different weight. From the most important:

  1. The driver’s age and experience. Young drivers pay several times more than experienced drivers.
  2. Claims history and no-claims discount. Claim-free years reduce the premium, while every claim increases it.
  3. Where the owner lives. Insurance is more expensive in major cities, particularly Warsaw, than in small localities.
  4. The car: its type (small car, compact, SUV or premium), engine capacity and power, and age.
  5. How the policy is purchased. Some insurers offer a discount for buying online.

Does the cost of third-party liability insurance depend on where you live?

Yes, where the car owner lives is one of the main factors affecting the price of third-party liability insurance. In comparisons for the same driver and car, the premium in Warsaw is clearly higher than in Kraków, Wrocław or Poznań, and lowest in villages and small towns. Insurers assume that major cities have heavier traffic, more collisions and more expensive repairs. We do not have separate median third-party liability insurance prices for individual cities, so we do not provide figures for particular localities.

Does third-party liability insurance depend on the car’s value?

Third-party liability insurance depends on the car’s value only indirectly: its type and class matter, rather than its market price. A premium car or powerful SUV has a higher premium than a small city car because it statistically causes more expensive damage. The car’s value is crucial for comprehensive insurance, however, as this protects your own vehicle. Comprehensive insurance alone has a median price of 2,000 PLN/year, with a typical range of 1,200 ‑ 2,650 PLN/year, depending on the car’s value and age.

How much does third-party liability and comprehensive insurance for a new car cost?

A third-party liability and comprehensive insurance package costs an average of 1,389 PLN/year per year, but the premium is usually higher for a new, expensive car because comprehensive insurance is calculated based on the vehicle’s value. A young driver pays about 3,550 PLN/year for a third-party liability and comprehensive insurance package. The cheapest comprehensive policies, from 300 PLN/year, are for older cars and policies with a high excess, while the most expensive, up to 5,000 PLN/year, are for new cars with full cover and repairs at an authorised service centre.

Which insurer offers the cheapest third-party liability insurance?

No single insurer offers the cheapest third-party liability insurance for everyone. Each insurer assesses the driver’s age, place of residence and car model differently, so the same insurer may be the cheapest for one driver and one of the more expensive options for another. This is why we do not recommend specific companies: the cheapest offer can only be found by comparing several quotes based on your details, a few weeks before your current policy expires.

How can you pay less for third-party liability insurance?

  • Compare offers every year. Policies renew automatically, often at a higher price. Cancel your policy and buy a cheaper one before the current period of cover ends.
  • Buy online. Some insurers offer a discount for purchasing online.
  • Maintain a claim-free record. It can sometimes be cheaper to pay for a minor collision yourself instead of claiming on your third-party liability insurance, so you do not lose your discount. Calculate the costs before reporting the claim.
  • Young driver: joint ownership. Adding a parent with a claim-free history as a joint owner reduces the premium, but a claim will later affect both people’s no-claims discounts.
  • Pay in one instalment. Instalment payments are usually more expensive than paying for the whole year upfront.
  • Do not buy extras without checking. Breakdown assistance and personal accident insurance can be worthwhile, but check whether you already have them under another policy.

When you buy a used car, the previous owner’s third-party liability insurance transfers to you until the end of the period for which it was purchased. You can cancel it and buy your own policy, as explained in the article re-registering a car without changing the number plates.

Scrapping a car and third-party liability insurance

When a car is scrapped, the remaining third-party liability insurance premium is not lost: after the vehicle has been dismantled and deregistered, the insurer refunds the premium for the unused period. You will need a dismantling certificate from an authorised dismantling facility and an application to the insurer. Deregistration at the local authority office costs about PLN 10. Do not stop paying for third-party liability insurance on a car that is still registered, even if you do not drive it: having no valid policy may result in a penalty from the Polish Insurance Guarantee Fund.

Third-party liability insurance is not the only fixed cost of owning a car

Your annual car budget should also include the compulsory roadworthiness test, which costs about PLN 149, as well as ongoing repairs. You can read more about inspection costs in the article how much does a car inspection cost. We compare other policies, including flat, house, health and pet insurance, in the insurance category.

Frequently asked questions

Does the cost of third-party liability insurance depend on engine capacity?

How much does third-party liability insurance cost for a 3-litre engine?

Osobnej mediany dla dużych silników nie mamy. Duża pojemność przesuwa składkę w górę, zwykle w stronę górnej granicy zebranych cen, czyli 900 PLN/year dla doświadczonego kierowcy. Dokładną kwotę pokaże kalkulacja dla konkretnego auta.

What does car third-party liability insurance cover?

What happens to third-party liability insurance when a car is scrapped?

Po oddaniu auta do stacji demontażu i wyrejestrowaniu go możesz zażądać od ubezpieczyciela zwrotu składki za niewykorzystany okres polisy. Samo wyrejestrowanie kosztuje około PLN 10.

Does third-party liability insurance renew automatically?

Tak, polisa OC odnawia się automatycznie na kolejny rok, jeśli jej nie wypowiesz przed końcem okresu ubezpieczenia. Żeby przejść do tańszego towarzystwa, wypowiedz starą polisę najpóźniej ostatniego dnia jej obowiązywania.
