Borehole well total cost 2026: examples for 20, 30 and 50 m
indekscen.pl editorial team · published 30 September 2026 · prices according to the 5 October 2026 index
The total cost of a borehole well is the drilling price multiplied by the depth, plus the pump and tank. The median drilling cost is 250 PLN/linear metre (typically 195 ‑ 300 PLN/linear metre), so drilling a 30 m borehole alone costs about PLN 7,500. A borehole pump costs about PLN 850, and a pressure tank about PLN 650. According to the sources, a complete well up to 30 m deep costs about PLN 9,000.
At a glance (as at 5 October 2026)
- Drilling a borehole well usually costs 195 ‑ 300 PLN/linear metre, with a median of 250 PLN/linear metre.
- Drilling a 30 m borehole alone costs about PLN 7,500 at the median rate, typically PLN 5,900 ‑ 9,000.
- A borehole pump costs about PLN 850, and a pressure tank about PLN 650.
- According to the sources, a complete borehole well up to 30 m deep, including materials, costs about PLN 9,000.
- A mains water connection usually costs 250 ‑ 290 PLN/linear metre, so a well can be cheaper when the mains is far away.

A borehole well provides a private water supply on a plot without a mains water connection, but its price consists of several items, not just one. Drilling companies usually quote a rate per metre, while the pump, pressure tank and connection to the house are separate costs. Below, we break down the total cost, calculate examples for 20, 30 and 50 m, and compare a well with a mains water connection. The figures are medians from public price lists published by drilling companies and construction guides.
How much does a borehole well cost: price per metre
The median cost of drilling a borehole well is 250 PLN/linear metre, and half of the collected rates fall within the 195 ‑ 300 PLN/linear metre range. According to 4 price lists and guides collected by indekscen.pl, the lowest rate is 180 PLN/linear metre and the highest is 350 PLN/linear metre.
The rate per metre usually includes drilling and the casing pipe. It does not include the pump, tank, connection to the house’s plumbing or formalities. The price per metre depends on:
- The type of ground. Drilling through sand and clay is cheaper, while rock and gravel containing stones increase the rate.
- The casing pipe diameter. A wider well is more expensive, but allows a higher-capacity pump to be used.
- The depth. Some companies charge a minimum price for a well and a higher rate for each metre beyond 30 m.
- Access for the drilling rig. A confined plot or waterlogged ground may require smaller equipment and more time.
Borehole well total cost: examples for 20, 30 and 50 m
The total cost of a borehole well is the sum of three items: the borehole (rate per metre multiplied by depth), the borehole pump (about PLN 850) and the pressure tank (about PLN 650). The table below shows the items for three typical depths, each calculated using the median and typical range of rates per metre.
| Item | Cost at the median rate | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| 20 m borehole | PLN 5,000 | PLN 3,900 ‑ 6,000 |
| 30 m borehole | PLN 7,500 | PLN 5,900 ‑ 9,000 |
| 50 m borehole | PLN 13,000 | PLN 9,800 ‑ 15,000 |
| Borehole pump | PLN 850 | depending on power and capacity |
| Pressure tank | PLN 650 | depending on capacity |
| Complete well up to 30 m (package offer) | PLN 9,000 | minimum price charged by some companies |
The table shows that for a shallow well, the equipment and the company’s minimum charge have a greater impact on the price than the depth itself. For a deep well, drilling is the main expense. A package offer for a well ‘up to 30 m’ at about PLN 9,000 usually includes materials and all the work, so if the water is relatively shallow, it is worth comparing this with a per-metre quote.
Costs not included in the table are: connecting the pump to the house’s plumbing, the electricity supply, a casing or inspection chamber for the wellhead, and a possible water treatment system if the water contains a lot of iron or manganese. These items depend on the particular plot, so ask the contractor for a turnkey quote.
Borehole well: how deep do you need to drill?
A borehole well is usually between a dozen and several dozen metres deep. Its depth is determined by the aquifer beneath the plot, not by the investor’s preference. Each additional metre costs an average of 250 PLN/linear metre, so at the median rate the difference between a 20 m and 50 m well is about PLN 7,500. Local drillers usually know the water depth from nearby boreholes, and hydrogeological maps can also help.
Water from deeper layers separated from the surface by an impermeable layer is usually better protected against contamination than water from a shallow dug well. Regardless of the depth, have the water tested by a laboratory before drinking it.
Borehole well: permit or notification?
A borehole well up to 30 m deep for household use does not require planning permission, and notification is usually sufficient. A well deeper than 30 m requires a geological works plan approved by the county authority and additional formalities, which increase the total cost. If water is found close to the 30 m threshold, it is therefore worth asking the driller whether the well can be kept within this depth. Confirm the requirements for the particular plot with the county authority and Wody Polskie, as the procedure depends on the depth and the amount of water drawn.
How far should a borehole well be from the house?
A borehole well must comply with statutory distances, including 5 m from the plot boundary and 15 m from a septic tank, with greater distances required from the drainage system of a domestic sewage treatment plant and from sewers. The regulations do not specify a fixed distance from the owner’s house. In practice, drillers leave several metres from the wall to provide enough room for the drilling rig and to allow the pump to be removed later. It is best to plan the location of the well together with the site development plan.
Is a borehole well worth it?
A borehole well is most worthwhile when the water mains is far away. A mains water connection usually costs 250 ‑ 290 PLN/linear metre, so at the median rate a 50 m connection costs about PLN 14,000, similar to a 30 m borehole (PLN 7,500). If the water mains runs directly beside the plot boundary, a connection is usually cheaper and simpler.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deep well | 250 PLN/linear metre | 195 ‑ 300 PLN/linear metre | 4 |

The second consideration is the bills. There are no water charges for water drawn from a borehole well for personal household use, as this is considered ordinary water use. You pay for electricity to run the pump, servicing and any filters. If you have a large garden that needs watering in summer, the savings on bills can become noticeable after just a few seasons.
A well is often planned together with sewage disposal, for example with domestic sewage treatment plant. In this case, the required distance between them must be maintained from the outset. We discuss the cost of utilities and construction stages in more detail in the article cost of building a house.
What are the disadvantages of a borehole well?
The main disadvantages of a borehole well are the high initial cost (a 30 m borehole alone costs about PLN 7,500), dependence on electricity and the risk that the water will require treatment. In addition:
- No water during a power cut, unless you have a generator or backup power supply for the pump.
- Pump and filter servicing every few years. Replacing the pump costs roughly the price of a new pump, about PLN 850.
- Uncertain drilling outcome. The water yield and quality are not known until drilling is complete.
- Additional formalities for deeper wells.
What should you ask a drilling company?
- What the price per metre includes: are the casing pipe, filter and flushing by pumping included in the rate?
- Whether there is a minimum charge for a well, and from what depth the price per metre increases.
- Who handles the formalities, notification or plan, and how much this costs.
- Whether the company guarantees the water yield and what happens if the yield proves insufficient.
- Whether the price includes installing the pump and pressure tank and connecting them to the house.
