Even so, many people buy the cheapest policy at the last minute without checking the coverage limits and exclusions. We have collected prices from price lists and sample quotes to show how much a week of cover really costs, how much a family will pay and which extras are worth paying for.

A basic policy covers medical treatment abroad, assistance services (arranging a doctor’s appointment, transport and an interpreter) and personal accident insurance. Higher-tier options also include luggage insurance and personal liability cover. Trip cancellation and sports cover are not usually included as standard: they must be purchased separately.
How much does family travel insurance cost?
Travel insurance for a family of two adults and one child for a week in Europe costs around 200 PLN/week. Many family policies cost less than three separate policies because children receive a discount or are covered together with their parents. Sample costs based on the median price per person:
| Trip to Europe | At the median price | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person, 7 days | 55 PLN/week | 43 ‑ 66 PLN/week |
| 1 person, 14 days | around PLN 110 | PLN 90 ‑ 130 |
| 2 people, 7 days | around PLN 110 | PLN 90 ‑ 130 |
| Family of two adults and one child, 7 days (family policy) | around 200 PLN/week | depends on the cover |
| 4 people, 7 days (separate policies) | around PLN 220 | PLN 170 ‑ 260 |
The estimates for several people and longer stays are calculated by multiplying the weekly price, so treat them as a guide. In practice, the daily price falls slightly on longer trips, and family policies may cost less than the combined price of separate policies.
What affects the price of travel insurance?
The price of travel insurance depends primarily on the destination, the length of the trip and the medical expenses cover limit. The main factors are:
- Destination. Europe is the cheapest, worldwide cover costs more, and policies for the USA and Canada are the most expensive because medical treatment costs the most there.
- Length of the trip. The insurer charges for each day, but the daily rate usually falls for longer trips.
- Medical expenses cover limit. The cheapest policies have low limits, typically in the tens of thousands of euros. It is worth choosing a much higher limit for travel outside Europe.
- Number and age of travellers. Older travellers pay more, children pay less, and families receive discounts.
- Additional cover. Winter and water sports, pre-existing medical conditions, luggage, personal liability and trip cancellation costs all increase the premium.
Is travel insurance worth buying?
Travel insurance is worth buying for every trip abroad because a weekly policy usually costs 43 ‑ 66 PLN/week, while a single day in a foreign hospital or medical transport back to Poland can cost many times more than the entire holiday. Although an EHIC is free, it is not enough: it only applies to public healthcare providers in EU countries and does not cover transport home or mountain rescue operations.
If you have private health insurance (medical subscription) for around 115 PLN/month, check whether it covers stays abroad at all. It usually does not, as the subscription provides access to a Polish network of healthcare facilities.
How many days before travelling should you buy travel insurance?
You can buy travel insurance even on the day of departure, provided you do so before crossing the border, because a policy purchased abroad usually has a waiting period. Trip cancellation insurance is different: it usually has to be purchased no later than 3 to 7 days after booking the trip or paying the deposit. If you are planning an expensive holiday well in advance, buy cancellation cover straight away and add medical cover later.
What should you look for in travel insurance?
The medical expenses cover limit and the list of exclusions are the most important aspects of travel insurance, followed by the price. The cheapest policy at 25 PLN/week may not cover the most common incidents. Before buying, check:
- The medical expenses and assistance cover limits, separately for Europe and the rest of the world.
- Pre-existing medical conditions. A flare-up of a condition for which you are receiving treatment is excluded by many policies or requires additional cover.
- Sports. Skiing, diving, mountain biking and even riding a scooter may fall outside the scope of a basic policy.
- Alcohol. Some insurers refuse to pay if an accident happens after drinking alcohol.
- Excesses and deductibles in luggage insurance.
- The assistance centre’s emergency number. Save it on your phone before departure, as many policies cover medical expenses only after you contact the centre.
How much does travel insurance outside Europe cost?
Travel insurance outside Europe is considerably more expensive than the median of 55 PLN/week for a week in Europe, and we do not yet have a separate median for trips to other continents. Insurers usually divide the world into zones: Europe and the Mediterranean, worldwide excluding the USA and Canada, and worldwide. North America carries the highest premium because hospital stays and medical transport cost the most there. Do not economise on the medical expenses cover limit for a long-haul trip: a limit that is sufficient in Europe may not cover even a single operation in the USA.
How can you reduce the cost of travel insurance?
The easiest way to reduce the cost of travel insurance is to tailor the cover to the trip instead of going without protection. A few options:
- An annual policy for frequent travel. If you travel several times a year, an annual policy may cost less than several weekly policies.
- A family option instead of separate policies for each person.
- No unnecessary extras. For a low-cost flight with hand luggage, luggage insurance is rarely worthwhile, while sports cover is only needed if you genuinely plan to take part in sports.
- Compare policies with the same scope of cover. A difference of several dozen PLN often means a medical expenses cover limit several times higher.
Where is the best place to buy travel insurance?
The most convenient option is to buy travel insurance online, directly from an insurer or through a comparison website, as you can see the prices and scope of several offers at once within minutes. We do not recommend specific companies: the best policy is one whose cover limits and exclusions suit your trip. Compare offers with the same scope of cover, not just the lowest advertised price. It is also worth checking the policy included by a travel agency or with a payment card, as these often have low medical expenses cover limits.
