How much does it cost to replace a car’s front windscreen?

Front windscreen replacement in a passenger car most often costs PLN 525, including the windscreen and labour, according to 6 price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall within PLN 350 ‑ 890. The cheapest prices, from PLN 180, cover fitting the windscreen alone, while the most expensive, up to PLN 3,000, are for windscreens with a full set of electronics in premium cars. Details are available at windscreen replacement.

The price includes the windscreen, fitting labour and basic installation materials, namely adhesive and primer. ADAS camera calibration and new seals and trim are usually charged separately if the old ones do not survive removal.

Front, rear or camera-equipped windscreen: cost comparison

A windscreen with a rain sensor, heating or an ADAS camera costs around PLN 1,100, considerably more than a standard front windscreen. A rear windscreen is cheaper because it usually has no electronics apart from heating.

Type of repair Cost according to price lists Notes
Resin chip repair PLN 185 ‑ 200 small chips only
Rear windscreen replacement around PLN 325 with heating
Standard front windscreen replacement PLN 350 ‑ 890 without electronics
Front windscreen with sensors or camera around PLN 1,100 plus camera calibration

The price also depends on whether you choose an original windscreen bearing the car manufacturer’s logo or an aftermarket alternative. Good aftermarket windscreens are often made by the same factories as original ones and cost less. For a windscreen with a camera, however, it is worth asking the workshop whether the alternative is certified as compatible with the model’s ADAS system.

What determines the cost of windscreen replacement?

The cost of windscreen replacement depends primarily on the windscreen’s equipment and the car model, and only then on the workshop. Two windscreens for the same model can have very different prices if one has only a tinted strip while the other has a rain sensor, heating and a camera mount. The workshop will ask about:

  1. Windscreen features: rain and light sensors, heating across the entire surface or in the wiper area, an ADAS camera, a head-up display (HUD), acoustic glass.
  2. Car model and year. Many aftermarket alternatives are available for popular cars, while rare models often require an original windscreen.
  3. Original or aftermarket. The difference in the price of the windscreen itself can be substantial, while a good aftermarket alternative offers comparable quality.
  4. Camera calibration. After replacing a windscreen with a camera, the workshop must recalibrate the system, which requires a special target board and diagnostic equipment.
  5. Payment method. For cashless replacement under an insurance policy, the insurer often decides which windscreen and workshop will be used.

If the car has lane assist, traffic sign recognition or emergency braking, the camera is most likely mounted behind the front windscreen. Ask about calibration when requesting the initial quote, not when collecting the car.

Chip repair or windscreen replacement?

Repairing a chip with resin most often costs PLN 190, several times less than replacing a front windscreen. Workshops usually repair coin-sized chips that are outside the driver’s field of vision and not too close to the edge of the windscreen. Details are available at car windscreen chip (crack) repair.

Do not delay the repair. Dirt and moisture enter the chip, and in winter the temperature difference between a warm interior and freezing conditions can turn a small chip into a long crack during a single journey. Replacement is then the only option. Until your workshop appointment, simply cover the chip with clear tape.

What kind of windscreen crack can you drive with?

You should not drive with a cracked front windscreen in the driver’s field of vision, and an inspector may classify such damage as a defect and refuse to approve the vehicle during its roadworthiness test. The police may also issue a fine for driving a car with damaged glass that restricts visibility. A small chip outside the driver’s field of vision is usually not a problem during the test, but it is worth repairing before it spreads.

You can read about the other items checked by the inspector in our article how much does a car roadworthiness test cost.

Is it worth claiming for windscreen replacement under comprehensive insurance?

Claiming for windscreen replacement under comprehensive insurance is usually worthwhile for an expensive windscreen with a camera, costing around PLN 1,100, but less often for a standard windscreen costing PLN 525. It all depends on the policy terms: with some insurance policies, a windscreen claim reduces the no-claims discount on comprehensive cover, while with others it does not if optional windscreen cover was purchased.

Before reporting the claim, check the general insurance terms and conditions:

  1. Whether a windscreen claim affects the no-claims discount in the following year.
  2. Whether there is an excess and how much it is.
  3. Whether the insurer allows you to choose the workshop or appoints one.
  4. Whether it covers an original windscreen or only an aftermarket alternative.
  5. Whether ADAS camera calibration is included in the price.

If another driver damaged the windscreen, for example in a collision, the repair is covered by their third-party liability insurance. If a stone was thrown up by a lorry’s wheels, however, it is difficult to identify the liable party. Read more about policies in our article the cheapest car third-party liability insurance.

How long does car windscreen replacement take?

Replacing a front windscreen itself usually takes one to two hours at a workshop. The adhesive then needs time to cure, so the car remains at the workshop or in its car park for a while longer: from one hour to several hours, depending on the adhesive and temperature. A windscreen with a camera also requires time for calibration.

For the first 24 hours after replacement, do not slam the doors, use an automatic car wash or remove the tape holding the trim in place. Some workshops offer mobile windscreen replacement at the customer’s home, but in rain or freezing conditions it is better to arrange the work indoors.

How can you avoid overpaying for windscreen replacement?

  • Provide the VIN when requesting a price. The same car model may have several windscreen versions, and the VIN allows the workshop to quote for the correct one.
  • Compare the price of an original windscreen and an aftermarket alternative at the same workshop.
  • Ask whether seals, trim and calibration are included in the price to avoid extra charges when collecting the car.
  • Ask for a leak warranty. A poorly fitted windscreen may leak or create wind noise at higher speeds.
  • Repair chips immediately. A repair costing PLN 190 is much cheaper than replacement.

What about the glass in a window?

Replacing an insulated glass unit in a uPVC window is a completely different service: it most often costs PLN 400, typically PLN 300 ‑ 525. A glazier measures the window, orders the glass unit and replaces it in the frame without replacing the entire window. Details are available at window pane replacement.
