Close-up of a car windscreen as a specialist injects resin into a small chip using a suction-mounted tool

A stone flies up from beneath a lorry’s wheels, there is a crack and a small star appears on the windscreen. The first thought is usually ‘windscreen replacement’, but a resin repair costing a fraction of that amount is often enough. We compared automotive glass service price lists to show how much chip repair costs, when it is worthwhile and when the entire windscreen must be replaced.

How much does car windscreen chip repair cost?

Car windscreen chip repair most often costs PLN 190 per chip, according to 5 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the offers fall within the narrow range of PLN 185 ‑ 200, the cheapest start at PLN 120, and the most expensive reach PLN 300. Details and quotations from price lists are available on the car windscreen chip (crack) repair page.

The price includes filling the chip with pressurised resin, curing it with a UV lamp and polishing the repaired area. The price rises when:

  1. The damage has branches. A bullseye chip is the cheapest to repair, while a ‘spider’ chip with cracks spreading outwards requires more resin and labour.
  2. There are several chips. Services usually charge separately for each chip, although the second one may be cheaper.
  3. The specialist travels to the customer. Mobile repair at your home or business costs more than repair at a workshop.
  4. The windscreen is unusual, for example in a van or with full-surface heating.

Chip repair or windscreen replacement: which is better value?

Chip repair usually costs several times less than windscreen replacement, so if the damage is suitable for repair, fixing it with resin is always cheaper. The median cost of replacing a windscreen, including labour, is PLN 525, while in cars with a rain sensor, heating or a driver assistance system camera it is around PLN 1,100, excluding camera calibration.

Situation What to do Approximate cost
Small, recent chip outside the field of vision resin repair PLN 185 ‑ 200
Two or three small chips repair each separately around PLN 380 for two
Chip in front of the driver’s eyes or near the edge replace the windscreen typically PLN 350 ‑ 890
Long crack replace the windscreen typically PLN 350 ‑ 890
Windscreen with an ADAS camera, sensor or heating replacement and calibration around PLN 1,100 plus calibration

The second benefit of repair is less obvious: the factory-fitted windscreen and original bonding remain in place. Replacement always carries a risk of leaks, noise or the need to calibrate the camera. When does a chip require windscreen replacement?

A chip requires windscreen replacement when it is too large, lies in the driver’s field of vision or is too close to the edge. Automotive glass centres usually apply similar criteria:

  • Size. Chips up to roughly the diameter of a two-złoty coin, about 2 cm, and cracks up to a few centimetres long can be repaired. Price lists often set a limit of ‘chips up to 10 mm’ for the lowest price.
  • Location. Damage in the area directly in front of the driver, within the sweep of the wiper, usually rules out repair because the resin mark could distort the view.
  • Distance from the edge. A chip less than several centimetres from the edge of the windscreen can easily develop into a crack running across the entire pane.
  • Depth. Repair is not worthwhile if the inner layer of the laminated glass is also damaged.

The automotive glass centre makes the final decision after examining the windscreen. It is worth taking a photo of the chip with a coin next to it and sending it to two centres before making the journey.

Is it worth repairing windscreen chips?

Repairing windscreen chips is worthwhile because, for around PLN 190, it stops damage that could develop at any time into a crack requiring windscreen replacement costing PLN 525 or more. A chip grows when temperatures change: heating the windscreen with the blower on a frosty morning, using a car wash with hot water or driving over a potholed road can be enough to cause a crack across half the windscreen.

Cover the chip with clear tape until your appointment. This protects it from dirt and water, and clean damage can be filled more effectively with resin.

How much does repairing several chips at once cost?

Repairing several chips costs roughly a multiple of the price for one, which means around PLN 380 for two chips and around PLN 570 for three if the service does not offer a discount for additional repairs. It is worth doing the sums, because with three or four chips the bill approaches the price of a basic windscreen without electronics. If the windscreen has already been heavily dulled by sand and has several damaged areas, replacement may be more sensible, especially if it is covered by an insurance policy. Ask the service for both quotes and compare them with the median replacement price of PLN 525.

How long does windscreen chip repair take?

Windscreen chip repair usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, including cleaning, resin injection, lamp curing and polishing. The car can be used immediately after the repair. Replacing the entire windscreen takes longer: installation itself takes one or two hours, after which the adhesive must cure before the car can be driven safely.

Can you drive with a chip in the windscreen?

You can drive to an automotive glass centre with a small chip outside your field of vision, but it is best not to delay. A police officer may decide that a cracked or damaged windscreen restricts visibility and issue a fine or retain the vehicle registration certificate, while an inspector may fail the car at its vehicle inspection. We explain the inspection process in the article how much does a vehicle inspection cost.

Will insurance cover windscreen chip repair?

Windscreen chip repair is often covered by comprehensive motor insurance or additional glass insurance, usually without affecting your no-claims discount, because insurers prefer to pay for a repair rather than a new windscreen. comprehensive car insurance (AC) itself usually costs 1,200 ‑ 2,650 PLN/year per year, so it is not worth buying solely for windscreen cover. If you already have comprehensive cover or a glass package, check the policy terms to see whether chip repairs are covered and which centres offer cashless settlement. You can claim for windscreen repair under the responsible party’s third-party liability insurance only if you know who caused the damage, which is rare when a stone flies up from beneath another vehicle’s wheels.

How can you avoid overpaying for chip repair?

  • Ask about the price for the first and each additional chip. The difference can be substantial when several areas are damaged.
  • Ask about the guarantee. A reputable service guarantees that the repaired area will not crack further, or deducts the repair cost from the price of windscreen replacement.
  • Do not pay for a call-out if the service is on your way. Mobile repair is convenient but more expensive.
  • Do not agree to replacement without an assessment. If one service immediately recommends a new windscreen, ask another for an opinion based on a photo.
