Hiring a 100 kg or 500 kg plate compactor: which should you choose and how much does it cost?
Hiring a 100 kg plate compactor usually costs near the lower end of the 100 ‑ 175 PLN/day range, while heavier machines cost more. Weight determines how deeply the compactor compresses the ground, so choose it according to the layer thickness, not the size of the area.

A 500 kg plate compactor is designed for large yards and access roads. For a domestic driveway, a reversible plate compactor weighing 150 to 200 kg is usually sufficient if you compact the aggregate in layers of 15 to 20 cm. The price lists in our index do not provide a separate median for 500 kg machines, so we do not quote their prices. Ask the hire company for the rate for a specific model.
A polyurethane mat must be fitted beneath the plate when compacting the paving blocks themselves to avoid scratching or chipping them. Ask whether the hire company includes one in the price.
How much does it cost to hire a plate compactor for several days?
At the median rate, hiring a plate compactor for two days costs around PLN 260, but many hire companies reduce the rate from the second or third day. A week usually costs less than PLN 910, which is the price of seven full days. Some companies also offer a rate for several hours or a fixed weekend rate from Friday afternoon to Monday morning.
Example: a 60 m² block-paved driveway built as a DIY project. You compact the sub-base in layers on the first day, then the bedding layer and laid paving on the second day. You therefore need the plate compactor for two days (around PLN 260) and a trailer to transport it if you do not use the delivery service.
How should you compact the ground to avoid paying for extra days?
Ground compaction is fastest when the aggregate is damp, spread evenly and compacted in thin layers. An excessively thick layer is the most common mistake: the surface looks hard, while loose areas remain underneath and sink after winter. You then have to remove the paving and hire the equipment again.
Follow these steps for a driveway or path:
- Compact the existing soil at the bottom of the excavation before adding the aggregate.
- Lay geotextile fabric if the soil is clayey or damp.
- Spread a 15 to 20 cm layer of aggregate and dampen it slightly.
- Pass over each layer several times in overlapping strips, working from the edges towards the centre.
- Spread the bedding layer, level it with a screed and lay the paving blocks.
- Compact the laid paving with a mat, then fill the joints with sand and pass over it once more.
Following this sequence, two days of hire are usually sufficient for a domestic driveway. A third day is generally needed only for a large area or because of rain.
What will you pay in addition to the daily rate?
In addition to the daily plate compactor hire rate, you will usually pay a refundable deposit, fuel and possibly delivery. These items can significantly increase the first day’s cost, so ask about them when booking.
- Refundable deposit. Hire companies collect it when the equipment is issued and return it after the equipment is brought back. The amount depends on the machine’s value.
- Fuel. Petrol or diesel plate compactors are supplied with a full tank, and you pay for any shortfall when returning them.
- Delivery and collection. This may be charged at a fixed rate within the town or per kilometre. Hiring a trailer is an alternative, and car trailer hire typically costs 53 ‑ 70 PLN/day.
- Net or gross. Some price lists quote net (excl. VAT) prices for businesses. A private individual pays the gross (incl. VAT) price, so the difference is noticeable.
- Damage and cleaning. Returning equipment with dried concrete or mud on it may incur an additional charge.

It is worth hiring equipment that you will use for several days on a single construction or renovation project. Buying a plate compactor, demolition hammer or generator costs many times the daily hire rate, and the equipment would then sit unused at home for years. Plate compactor hire or a paving contractor: which is better value?
Hiring a plate compactor is worthwhile when you are building a driveway or path yourself. If you commission a company to do the work, compaction is included in the service price. For laying paving blocks with materials, companies usually charge 255 ‑ 270 PLN/m², labour alone costs around 75 PLN/m², and ground preparation around 85 PLN/m².
Doing the work yourself saves on labour but requires time and physical effort. A poorly compacted sub-base leads to ruts and sunken paving after the first winter, and repairing it costs more than an additional day of hire. - Book in advance during the busy season. Plate compactors are often fully booked in spring and summer, and the last machine available is frequently the heaviest and most expensive.
- Prepare the site before collection. The excavation, aggregate and bedding material should be ready before the hire day starts.
- Ask about a discount for a longer period and a weekend rate.
- Check the equipment on collection. Take photographs, start the engine and check whether a paving mat is included.
- Compare delivery with trailer hire. Delivery may be more convenient over a short distance, while a trailer may be cheaper over a longer one.
