All that remains is printing and binding, a small expense, but one that is easy to overpay for when everything is left until the last minute. We checked the price lists of copy shops and printers to find out how much printing, soft binding and hardback binding cost, and calculated an example for a typical bachelor’s thesis.

How much does it cost to print a bachelor’s thesis?

Printing a bachelor’s thesis costs around PLN 0.50 per black-and-white A4 page, while binding is usually PLN 14 per copy, according to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. The cost of one copy therefore has two components: printing all the pages and binding them. A bachelor’s thesis is usually 40 to 80 pages long, so binding can make up the larger part of the bill, especially hardback binding. Printing accounts for a greater share of the cost of a longer master’s thesis.

Hardback binding with lettering on the cover costs more, at the upper end of the range up to PLN 49.90, but it looks elegant and is often chosen for a personal or family copy.

The most common types of binding are:

1. Soft channel binding (the spine is pressed into a metal channel): the cheapest, quick and neat-looking.
2. Soft glued binding (thermal binding): durable and suitable for a thicker thesis.
3. Hardback with a spine: rigid covers, often in the faculty’s colour.
4. Premium hardback with embossing or gold lettering: the most expensive, with the author’s name and thesis title on the cover.
5. Spiral binding: inexpensive, but rarely accepted by universities for theses.

Can you print a bachelor’s thesis yourself?

You can print a bachelor’s thesis yourself on a home printer and order the binding from a copy shop, typically for PLN 10 ‑ 20 per copy. The saving on printing is small because a copy shop charges around PLN 0.50 per page, while home printer toner or ink and paper also cost money. The risk is greater: streaks, misaligned margins or running out of ink on the night before the deadline.

If your home printer fails at the last minute, printer repair usually costs PLN 125 ‑ 185 and takes several days, so a copy shop is the faster option in this situation. Printing it yourself makes sense if you have a reliable laser printer and a supply of paper.

How long does it take to print a bachelor’s thesis?

Printing and binding a bachelor’s thesis at a copy shop usually takes from several minutes to an hour for a single order. Before the thesis defence periods in June and September, copy shops near universities have queues, and hardback binding with embossing may not be ready until the following day. Online printers complete orders within one or two days, plus delivery time.

A safe plan is to print the thesis three to five days before the deadline for submitting it to the dean’s office. This leaves time for corrections if the supervisor spots an error at the last minute or the binding is crooked. Before printing all copies, ask for one proof copy and check it page by page.

Colour printing: when is it worthwhile?

Printing a bachelor’s thesis in colour is worthwhile only for pages containing charts, photographs or maps, because a colour page costs several times more than a black-and-white page at around PLN 0.50. We do not yet have a separate median for colour printing, so we do not give a price. Most copy shops offer mixed printing: black-and-white text with selected pages in colour.

For mixed printing, prepare a list of the colour page numbers or two separate PDF files. The copy shop staff will not go through the entire thesis, and a mistake could mean paying for every page in colour. It is worth designing charts so that they are also legible in greyscale, making colour unnecessary in the copies submitted to the university.

Master’s thesis and bachelor’s thesis: how do their costs differ?

A master’s thesis costs more to print because it is usually longer, but binding costs the same, typically PLN 10 ‑ 20 per copy. For a thesis of more than 100 pages, soft channel binding may not accommodate the thick spine, so the copy shop will suggest glued or hardback binding. The same applies to an engineering thesis with a large number of appendices.

What else do you need to pay for before your defence?

Besides printing and binding, there are usually a few smaller expenses before the defence, depending on the university:

• Fee for the diploma and diploma supplement. The university sets the amount and provides details through the dean’s office.

How can you avoid overpaying for printing and binding your thesis?

• Check the university’s requirements before printing. The number of copies, type of binding and single-sided or double-sided printing requirements vary between faculties.
• Save your thesis as a PDF. A Word document may lose its formatting on the copy shop’s computer, and reprinting doubles the cost.
• Compare a copy shop near the university with an online printer. Binding price differences are noticeable when ordering several copies.
• Do not print on the final day. Express service can cost more, and printing errors are harder to correct.
• Choose hardback binding for your own copy and soft binding for the university copies, if the regulations allow it.
