An old chain inherited from your grandmother, single earrings, wedding rings from a previous relationship: a goldsmith can use this gold to make new wedding rings or a ring, with you paying mainly for labour. Below, we have collected rates from goldsmiths’ price lists, compared wedding rings, rings and small jewellery priced by the gram, and checked what may be added to the price: extra precious metal, stones, design and engraving. We do not list the price of gold itself because it depends on market quotations, not service price lists.

How much do wedding rings made from your own gold cost?

A pair of wedding rings made from your own gold usually costs PLN 590 ‑ 1,150 in labour, while the median from 3 price lists collected by indekscen.pl is PLN 900. The cheapest offer in our sources is PLN 275 for a pair of plain, single-colour wedding rings, while classic wedding rings from a more expensive workshop start at PLN 1,446.

This wide variation results from three factors: the wedding ring’s profile (plain, flat or rounded, or textured), the number of gold colours and whether the workshop makes the rings by hand or casts them in a mould. Quotes from price lists and the dates of the prices are available on the making jewellery from the customer's own gold page.

How much does it cost to have a ring made from your own gold?

According to goldsmiths’ price lists, having a ring made from your own gold costs about PLN 800 per item. This is the price for a ring without stones: setting and purchasing a stone, as well as a 3D design for an unusual pattern, are charged separately.

Some workshops price rings by the gram of the finished item, as they do earrings and pendants. According to the sources, the labour rate is then about PLN 70, and the final price depends on the ring’s weight. For a light, simple ring, pricing by the gram can be cheaper than a per-item price; for a heavy signet ring, the opposite applies.

How many grams of gold are needed for one wedding ring?

One wedding ring usually requires three to six grams of gold: a narrow women’s ring weighs less, while a wide men’s ring weighs more. A pair of classic wedding rings therefore usually requires anywhere from several to over ten grams of precious metal. The goldsmith will calculate the exact amount based on the ring size, width and thickness.

Some metal is lost during remelting, and old gold may be contaminated with solder and components made from other alloys. You should therefore bring slightly more gold to the workshop than the finished wedding rings are expected to weigh. If there is not enough precious metal, the workshop will charge for the missing gold according to its own price list; this surcharge is not included in the labour cost.

How much does 1 g of gold jewellery made from your own gold cost?

According to goldsmiths’ price lists, one gram of jewellery made from your own gold costs about PLN 70, because you are paying only for labour. Goldsmiths usually price earrings, pendants, small rings and chains this way. When buying ready-made jewellery from a shop, the price per gram also includes the precious metal and the retailer’s margin, so it cannot be compared directly with the labour rate.

How long does it take to make wedding rings from your own gold?

Making wedding rings from your own gold usually takes workshops between one and several weeks, depending on their workload and whether the gold first needs to be purified and brought to the required fineness. Simple plain wedding rings are completed faster than textured designs or rings featuring two colours of gold or stones. During the wedding season, from spring to autumn, workshops receive more orders, so lead times are longer.

Before beginning the work, the goldsmith will weigh the gold in your presence, check its fineness and calculate how much precious metal is needed for wedding rings in your chosen size. Only then will they give you the final price: labour, any surcharge for missing gold or a refund for the excess. If the workshop will not record the weight of the supplied gold on the receipt, choose another one.

Wedding rings made from your own gold or ready-made ones from a shop?

Wedding rings made from your own gold are usually cheaper than ready-made ones only if you have all the precious metal required: you then pay solely for labour, typically PLN 590 ‑ 1,150 per pair. The price of ready-made wedding rings from a shop includes the gold, labour and margin, but they are available immediately and in many designs. If you have little gold, the total cost depends on the surcharge for the missing precious metal, which changes with gold quotations.

Is it worth remelting gold into jewellery?

Remelting gold into jewellery is most worthwhile when you have enough precious metal for the entire item and its sentimental value matters to you. You then pay only for labour, for example PLN 900 for a pair of wedding rings, instead of buying the gold again.

It is less worthwhile if you have little gold and need to buy most of the required amount, or if the old jewellery is valuable as a complete item (signed, antique or set with stones). In that case, jewellery repair (e.g. a chain) may be a better option: the median cost of soldering a broken chain is PLN 45, while replacing a clasp costs about PLN 115.

Steps worth taking before placing an order:

  1. Weigh the gold and check its fineness on every item (the stamped hallmark, for example 585 or 333).
  2. Separate the stones and non-gold components, or ask the goldsmith to do so.
  3. Have your finger measured at the workshop, preferably in the afternoon, when your hands are slightly swollen.
  4. Record in writing the weight of the supplied gold, the target fineness and the completion date.
  5. Ask about the return of any excess precious metal and the surcharge if there is not enough.

What additional costs apply to wedding rings made from your own gold?

In addition to the labour cost, typically PLN 590 ‑ 1,150 per pair, there are usually extra items worth asking about when requesting a quotation:

  • Engraving inside the wedding rings: engraving a small item costs about PLN 20, with longer text or a design costing more.
  • Stones and setting them, charged separately.
  • 3D design for an unusual shape.
  • Two colours of gold or a texture (satin or hammered finish), which increase the labour cost.
  • Size adjustment after collection: making a ring smaller a gold ring costs about PLN 120.

How can you avoid overpaying for an item made from your own gold?

  • Ask two workshops for quotations using the same specifications: width, profile, fineness, colour and engraving.
  • Ask whether the price is per pair or per item, as price lists use both options.
  • Choose a simple profile if budget is important: plain, single-colour wedding rings are the cheapest in the price lists.
  • Do not leave your gold without a receipt stating its weight and describing the items.
  • Order well in advance, preferably several weeks before the wedding.
