An engagement ring bought without trying it on, a wedding band that no longer fits after a change in weight, or a family heirloom that slips off your finger: reducing a ring is one of the most common jewellery services. The price depends mainly on the metal. Below, we compare silver and gold, explain how long the alteration takes and when reducing a ring is not worthwhile.

How much does it cost to reduce the size of a gold ring?

Reducing the size of a gold ring at a jeweller’s costs around PLN 120, which is clearly more than for a silver ring. Gold requires solder of the same fineness and colour, more precise grinding and polishing of the joint, and white-gold rings often also need replating with rhodium after the alteration. A ring with stones or an unusual profile costs more, and the most difficult alterations in our data cost up to PLN 300.

If it is an engagement ring with a single stone in a raised setting, reducing it is usually straightforward: the jeweller cuts the shank at the back, removes a piece of metal and solders the band well away from the stone.

How much does it cost to reduce the size of a silver ring?

Reducing the size of a silver ring most often costs PLN 55, based on 5 jewellery price lists and guides collected by indekscen.pl, while the typical range is PLN 50 ‑ 175. The cheapest workshops charge from PLN 20 for a simple, plain band. Details and verbatim quotations from price lists are available on the making a ring smaller page.

How long does it take to reduce a ring?

Reducing a simple ring at a jeweller’s usually takes one to several working days, and small workshops can sometimes do it while you wait, in an hour or two. The work itself takes several dozen minutes for a plain band. The wait is longer at chain jewellery shops that send items to a central workshop, usually one to two weeks.

Turnaround times are longer for:

  1. Set stones, which must be protected or removed before soldering.
  2. White gold, as it needs rhodium plating after the alteration.
  3. Engravings that need to be recreated if the alteration cuts through the inscription.
  4. The wedding and pre-Christmas seasons, when jewellers receive the most orders.

If you need the ring by a specific date, for example for a wedding or proposal, ask about the turnaround time when leaving it with the jeweller and request written confirmation.

How does a jeweller reduce a ring?

A jeweller reduces a ring by cutting out part of the shank, soldering the band back together and polishing the joint until it is invisible. Plain bands can also be reduced without cutting: the band is compressed slightly using a special tool, but this only works for a small size difference. The usual process is as follows:

  1. Measuring the finger with ring sizers and determining the target size.
  2. Inspecting the ring: metal, fineness, stones, engraving and previous repairs.
  3. Protecting the stones from heat or removing them from their settings.
  4. Cutting out part of the shank at its lowest point, away from the stones and inscription.
  5. Soldering with solder of the same fineness and metal colour.
  6. Grinding and polishing, followed by rhodium plating for white gold.
  7. Checking the size on a mandrel and trying it on upon collection.

Try the ring on when collecting it. If it is too tight or you can feel the joint with your finger, the jeweller can correct it immediately before you leave the workshop.

How many sizes can a ring be reduced by?

A ring can usually be reduced by one to three sizes without any visible change in appearance, and a plain band can be reduced by even more. With a substantial reduction, the pattern around the band no longer lines up and stones set around it begin to touch. The jeweller may then suggest a different solution.

In Poland, ring sizes correspond to finger circumference: size 12 means a circumference of 52 mm, while size 15 means 55 mm. Reducing a ring by one size means removing about one millimetre of metal from its circumference. The piece of gold that has been cut out is either kept by the workshop or returned to the customer, so it is worth asking about this before commissioning the work.

What should you do if a ring is too large?

If a ring is half a size or one size too large, it does not always need to be altered. There are three options, differing in price and durability:

  • A silicone insert or ring size adjuster fitted inside the shank: the cheapest temporary solution, with no alteration to the metal.
  • Sizing beads or an inner ring guard soldered inside: the jeweller adds two small beads that hold the ring on the finger. This is useful when the knuckle is wider than the base of the finger.
  • Reducing the ring: a permanent solution, usually PLN 50 ‑ 175 for silver and around PLN 120 for gold.

Finger circumference changes throughout the day and with temperature. Before having the ring altered, measure your finger several times, preferably in the evening and in a warm room, to avoid making the ring too small.

When is reducing a ring not worthwhile?

Reducing a ring is not worthwhile when the size difference is very large, the ring has stones around the entire band, known as an eternity ring, or it has a pattern that cannot be cut without leaving a visible trace. In this situation, the jeweller may suggest melting it down and making a new ring from the same precious metal.

The making jewellery from the customer's own gold service costs considerably more than an alteration: labour per gram for small jewellery items is around PLN 70, while a new ring priced per item costs around PLN 800. By comparison, the median price for a pair of wedding bands made from the customer’s own gold is PLN 900.

How can you avoid overpaying to have a ring reduced?

  • Ask for the price for the specific metal and number of sizes. Some jewellers charge separately for each additional size.
  • Check whether polishing and rhodium plating are included in the price. Rhodium plating often costs extra for white gold.
  • Ask for an engraving quote if the alteration will affect it. engraving a small item usually costs PLN 18 ‑ 26.
  • Combine services. If you are taking in a ring, bring a broken chain too: having it soldered at the same workshop (jewellery repair (e.g. a chain)) usually costs PLN 40 ‑ 58.
  • Check the guarantee. The shop where the ring was bought may be able to resize it as part of the purchase or at a discount, so ask about this when collecting it.
