Your dentist says, ‘Please have a panoramic dental X-ray,’ and hands you a referral, leaving you wondering where to go, how much it will cost, whether it is available through the NFZ and whether anything else is needed. We collected prices from the price lists of X-ray imaging centres and dental practices to show how much a private panoramic dental X-ray costs, when the NFZ will cover it and how it differs from the more expensive dental CT scan.
How much does a private panoramic dental X-ray cost?
According to 3 imaging centre price lists collected by indekscen.pl, a private panoramic dental X-ray most often costs PLN 100, with a typical range of PLN 95 ‑ 115. The cheapest offers, from PLN 89, are available for online bookings at X-ray imaging centres, while the most expensive, up to PLN 139, are at practices that charge extra for a CD or report. The price covers the digital panoramic image itself.
What may be charged separately:
- A report by a radiologist. Some imaging centres include the report in the price, while others charge separately. If your dentist assesses the image, a report is often unnecessary.
- Recording the image on a CD instead of sending it by e-mail or providing online access.
- A package with other images, such as cephalometric imaging for orthodontic treatment.
Price differences between imaging centres are small, so location, appointment availability and whether your dentist can access the digital image are usually more important when choosing one.
Can you have a panoramic dental X-ray through the NFZ?
Yes. Since January 2025, the NFZ has funded a panoramic dental X-ray with a report for adults once every five years, but only as part of root canal treatment or before prosthodontic treatment through the NFZ. An NFZ-funded panoramic dental X-ray is not a standalone check-up: you cannot have one free of charge ‘just in case’ or before private treatment. The referral is issued by the dentist providing your NFZ treatment, and the examination is performed at a facility contracted by the fund.
If you are receiving private treatment, you will typically pay PLN 95 ‑ 115 for a panoramic dental X-ray. By comparison, the other treatment costs are considerably higher: the median price of root canal treatment for a single-rooted tooth is PLN 645 (root canal treatment), while a dental check-up costs PLN 215.
Do you need a referral for a panoramic dental X-ray?
Yes, you need a referral from a doctor or dentist for a panoramic dental X-ray, including a private examination, because it uses X-rays. The referral is usually issued by a dentist, orthodontist or oral surgeon. Some X-ray imaging centres assist patients without a referral by arranging a short consultation on site, but this depends on the facility, so ask when booking.
How long a referral for a panoramic dental X-ray remains valid depends on the facility and the purpose of the examination. If the referral is several months old and the condition of your teeth has changed, your dentist may want a new image. The simplest option is to ask the imaging centre when booking.
Are a panoramic dental X-ray and a dental X-ray the same thing?
No. A panoramic dental X-ray and an intraoral X-ray of a tooth are two different images with separate prices in price lists. An intraoral X-ray provides a close-up of one or two teeth and is useful during root canal treatment or when checking a single filling. A panoramic dental X-ray is one image of the entire upper and lower jaw, including the temporomandibular joints and sinuses. The third option is a CBCT scan, which produces a three-dimensional image.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panoramic dental X-ray | PLN 100 | PLN 95 ‑ 115 | 3 |
| Dental CT scan (CBCT) | PLN 235 | PLN 170 ‑ 300 | 6 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
| Examination | What it shows | Typical price | When it is ordered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panoramic dental X-ray | all teeth in 2D, upper and lower jaw | PLN 95 ‑ 115 | first appointment, treatment planning, orthodontics, wisdom teeth |
| CBCT scan, one arch | upper or lower jaw in 3D | PLN 170 ‑ 300 | implants, complex root canal treatment, impacted teeth |
| CBCT scan, smallest area | part of the arch in 3D | from PLN 150 | one tooth, area of a single procedure |
A dental CT scan costs considerably more than a panoramic dental X-ray, but it provides information that a panoramic image cannot show: bone thickness, the course of root canals in three dimensions and the position of a nerve. Dentists usually order one routinely before placing an implant. We discuss the cost of the procedure itself in the article how much does a dental implant cost, while details of CT scans are available on the dental CT scan (CBCT) page.
What is a panoramic dental X-ray and when is it taken?
A panoramic dental X-ray is an X-ray image of all the teeth, taken as the machine moves once around the patient’s head. The patient stands up, bites down on a plastic piece and remains still for several seconds. Dentists most often order a panoramic dental X-ray in the following situations:
- a first appointment with a new dentist, to see the condition of all the teeth at once,
- orthodontic treatment planning before braces are fitted,
- assessment of wisdom teeth before deciding whether to remove them; we discuss extraction costs in the article private and NFZ-funded tooth extraction,
- before prosthodontic treatment, such as crowns, bridges or dentures,
- a follow-up after treatment and identifying the source of pain that is not visible during an examination.
How should you prepare for a panoramic dental X-ray and how should you interpret the result?
No special preparation is required for a panoramic dental X-ray: you do not need to fast or stop taking medication. Before the examination, you remove jewellery from your ears and neck, glasses, hair clips, tongue piercings and removable dentures, as metal obscures parts of the image. During the examination, the technician will usually give you a protective apron or collar. If you are or may be pregnant, mention this before the examination.
Interpreting a panoramic dental X-ray yourself is rarely useful. The image shows teeth, roots, fillings and bones, but determining whether a shadow is tooth decay, inflammation or overlapping structures requires medical expertise. Discuss the result with the dentist who ordered the examination. If you want a written report, order it when booking, as adding a report later can be more expensive.
Panoramic dental X-rays for children: are they available and how much do they cost?
At imaging centres, a panoramic dental X-ray for a child costs the same as for an adult, usually PLN 95 ‑ 115. It is most often ordered by an orthodontist to assess developing permanent teeth before braces are fitted. The child must remain still for several seconds, so the examination is usually performed on children who are able to cooperate. The dentist overseeing the child’s care decides whether and when a panoramic dental X-ray is needed.
Where can you get the cheapest panoramic dental X-ray, for example in Warsaw?
The cheapest panoramic dental X-rays in our data, from PLN 89, are offered by a Warsaw X-ray imaging centre for online bookings. We do not yet have panoramic dental X-ray prices for individual cities, so use the nationwide range of PLN 95 ‑ 115 when comparing local offers. How to avoid overpaying:
- Check the price when booking online, as it may be lower than the price at reception.
- Ask whether the report is included in the price and whether your dentist needs one at all.
- Request the result in digital form instead of on a CD if the imaging centre charges extra for it.
- Do not repeat the X-ray unnecessarily. If you have a recent panoramic dental X-ray from another facility, take it to your appointment.
