A filling is the most common dental procedure, yet it can be difficult to find a single price. Dental surgeries charge for filling one, two or three tooth surfaces, with separate fees for anaesthesia and X-rays, while some price lists only give a starting price. We have compiled public price lists and compared how much a private filling costs, what the NFZ covers and when root canal treatment is needed instead of a filling.

How much does a private filling cost in 2026?

A private filling most often costs PLN 225 per permanent tooth, according to 3 public price lists and articles collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the prices fall between PLN 215 ‑ 300, the cheapest dental surgeries start at PLN 200, while large fillings in major cities cost up to PLN 500.

The price of filling usually includes removing decay from the cavity and placing the filling material. Anaesthesia and an X-ray may cost extra. This means that the total bill for a single appointment may be higher than the price of the filling shown in the price list.

How much does a filling in one tooth cost, and what affects the price?

A filling in one tooth costs from PLN 200 to PLN 500, with the size of the cavity being the main factor determining where your bill falls within this range. Factors listed in dental surgery price lists include:

  1. Number of tooth surfaces. A small cavity on one surface is at the lower end of the price range, while a filling covering two or three surfaces (for example, between teeth) is considerably more expensive.
  2. Material. Different grades of composite have different prices, while an aesthetic restoration of a front tooth costs more than a standard filling in a molar.
  3. Microscope and rubber dam. Working under magnification and using a rubber dam, which isolates the tooth, increases the price.
  4. City. Fillings are usually more expensive in major cities than in smaller localities. We do not yet publish filling prices for individual cities because we have too few local price lists.
  5. Extras. Some dental surgeries charge separately for anaesthesia and X-rays.

How much is an NFZ filling, and how does it differ from a paid one?

An NFZ filling is free for the patient if treatment is provided by a dental surgery contracted by the National Health Fund. The main difference compared with a paid filling is the material: for adults, the NFZ funds aesthetic light-cured fillings only in front teeth, with simpler materials used for back teeth. Children and young people under 18, as well as pregnant women, have broader coverage.

The rules governing the NFZ benefits package can change, so it is best to confirm the current coverage with the dental surgery or on the NFZ website before your appointment. In practice, a paid filling means a choice of material, shorter waiting times and often more time for the dentist to work on a single tooth. We explain how this works for tooth extractions in our article private and NFZ tooth extraction.

Filling, root canal treatment or extraction: cost comparison

A filling is the cheapest way to treat a tooth affected by decay: it usually costs PLN 215 ‑ 300, while root canal treatment costs PLN 585 ‑ 750 for a single-canal tooth, excluding restoration. The longer a cavity is left untreated, the more expensive the treatment becomes. These are the prices of procedures most commonly associated with treating a tooth:

Decay has reached the nerve, tooth with four canals root canal treatment around PLN 1,700
Repeat root canal treatment root canal retreatment around PLN 1,500
Tooth requiring removal extraction PLN 325 ‑ 415

After root canal treatment, the tooth still needs to be restored with either a large filling or a crown, which is charged separately. A missing tooth is most often replaced with an implant, and we discuss the costs in our article how much does a dental implant cost.

How long does a dental filling last?

A composite filling usually lasts from several years to more than a decade. Large fillings in molars, which bear the greatest chewing forces, wear out faster than small fillings in front teeth. Teeth grinding, poor oral hygiene and secondary decay around the edge of the filling also reduce its lifespan.

A dentist assesses the condition of old fillings during a check-up, which usually costs PLN 175 ‑ 245 privately. Replacing a leaking filling is priced like a new filling, so regular check-ups cost less than waiting until the tooth starts to hurt.

Light-cured, chemically cured and temporary fillings: how do they differ?

A light-cured filling is a composite filling that the dentist hardens with a curing light. It matches the colour of the tooth and is the type usually covered by private prices of PLN 215 ‑ 300. A chemically cured filling hardens after its components are mixed, is less aesthetic and is the type funded by the NFZ for adults’ back teeth.

A temporary filling protects the tooth between appointments, for example during root canal treatment, and is not intended for permanent use. Temporary filling products from a pharmacy are only intended to cover a cavity until you can see a dentist. Old-style amalgam fillings have no longer been used in the European Union since 2025.

How long does it take to place a filling, and does it hurt?

Placing a filling usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour per tooth. A dentist can treat a small cavity on one surface more quickly, while a large filling between teeth takes longer because the shape and contact point with the neighbouring tooth must be recreated. If several cavities need treatment, dental surgeries often suggest treating several teeth during one longer appointment.

For medium and deep cavities, the dentist will usually offer local anaesthesia, making the procedure painless. The tooth may be sensitive to cold for a few days afterwards. If the pain gets worse or occurs spontaneously, return to the dentist, as this may mean that the decay has reached deeper than it appeared on the X-ray. Do not eat until the anaesthetic has worn off to avoid biting your cheek.

What else might appear on your dental bill?

In addition to the filling itself, the bill may include:

  • Check-up or consultation: PLN 175 ‑ 245, sometimes included in the first treatment appointment.
  • Panoramic dental X-ray: PLN 95 ‑ 115. A small X-ray of one tooth costs less.
  • Professional teeth cleaning: PLN 370 ‑ 400 for scaling and air polishing. Dentists often recommend it before treatment because tartar makes cavities difficult to assess.
  • Anaesthesia: included in the price at some dental surgeries and charged separately at others.

Check all these items in the dental surgery’s price list before your appointment. If you have several cavities, ask for a treatment plan with a price for each tooth so that you know the total cost.

How can you avoid overpaying for a filling?

  • Ask for the price based on the number of surfaces, rather than just the starting price. A large filling can cost twice as much as a small one.
  • Ask about anaesthesia and X-rays, and whether they are included in the price.
  • Consider NFZ treatment for front teeth, as aesthetic fillings are also funded for adults in these teeth.
  • Attend regular check-ups. A small filling costs a fraction of the price of root canal treatment.
  • Always ask your dentist about the choice of treatment, because an examination, not a price list, determines whether a filling will be sufficient.
