A dental CT scan is an examination usually requested by a dentist before an implant, the removal of an impacted wisdom tooth or difficult root canal treatment. The patient is told, ‘Please get a CBCT scan’, and only at the imaging centre learns that the price depends on the area covered. We collected price lists from dental clinics and X-ray centres to show how much each option costs and how CT differs from a panoramic X-ray.
How much does a private dental CT scan cost?
A private dental CBCT scan most commonly costs PLN 235, according to 6 price lists collected by indekscen.pl. Half of the offers fall within the PLN 170 ‑ 300 range, the cheapest start at PLN 150, and the most expensive reach PLN 350. Detailed price lists and quotations are available on the dental CT scan (CBCT) page.
The variation is mainly due to what exactly the examination covers. Price lists generally include three levels:
| Dental CT scan area | Indicative price | When it is sufficient |
|---|---|---|
| Small area (one or several teeth) | from PLN 150 | root canal treatment, one implant, a single wisdom tooth |
| One arch (upper or lower jaw) | typically PLN 170 ‑ 300 | several implants in one arch, surgical planning |
| Both arches, full scan | up to around PLN 350 | treatment of all teeth, orthodontics, prosthodontics |
Some clinics include a specialist report in the price, while others charge for it separately. When comparing offers, ask two questions: what area the scan covers and whether the report is included in the price.
What does a dental CT scan show?
A dental CT scan provides a three-dimensional image of the teeth, roots and bone, which can be viewed layer by layer from every angle. Structures overlap on a standard 2D X-ray, while CBCT lets the dentist see the precise thickness and height of the bone, the course of the nerve canal in the lower jaw, the floor of the maxillary sinus and the position of the roots.
For this reason, CBCT is most commonly requested for:
- Implant planning. The dentist checks whether there is enough bone and how long an implant can be fitted without risking damage to the nerve. The dental implant itself usually costs PLN 3,000 ‑ 3,500, so the scan represents only a small part of the total treatment cost. We describe the full cost in the article how much does a dental implant cost.
- Removing an impacted wisdom tooth. The scan shows how close the roots are to the nerve. The wisdom tooth extraction itself usually costs PLN 625 ‑ 850.
- Difficult root canal treatment and retreatment. CBCT can reveal additional canals, root fractures and lesions around the root tip. The median price of initial root canal treatment is PLN 645, while retreatment costs around PLN 1,500.
- Orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery, when the position of impacted teeth or the temporomandibular joints needs to be assessed.
How does dental CT differ from a panoramic X-ray and a dental X-ray?
A dental CT scan produces a three-dimensional image, a panoramic X-ray is a single flat image of all the teeth, and an intraoral X-ray shows one or two teeth. They differ in price, radiation dose and what they reveal.
| Service | Median | Typically | Sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dental CT scan (CBCT) | PLN 235 | PLN 170 ‑ 300 | 6 |
| Panoramic dental X-ray | PLN 100 | PLN 95 ‑ 115 | 3 |
Median and typical range from public price lists, as at 5 October 2026. Each price includes a source and quotation on the service page.
A panoramic X-ray, or panoramic dental X-ray, usually costs PLN 95 ‑ 115, roughly half as much as CBCT. It is sufficient for an overview of all the teeth, an assessment of wisdom teeth and an initial evaluation before treatment. When the dentist needs bone measurements or a cross-sectional view, a panoramic X-ray is not sufficient and a CT scan is required at an additional cost. Read more about panoramic X-rays, referrals and NFZ in the article private and NFZ panoramic X-rays.
Dental CT should not be confused with conventional cT scan, which usually costs PLN 435 ‑ 490 for one area of the body. A CBCT scanner is smaller, the examination takes less time, and the radiation dose for a small area is lower than with a conventional CT scanner.
Can inflammation be seen on a dental CT scan?
A dental CT scan shows the effects of inflammation in the bone: a radiolucent area around the root tip, periapical lesions and bone loss, often earlier than on a standard X-ray. Inflammation of soft tissues, such as the dental pulp, is not always visible in the image. Leave the interpretation of the scan to a dentist, who will compare the image with your symptoms.
Is dental CT available through NFZ?
In an ordinary dental clinic, dental CBCT is effectively a private examination for which the patient usually pays PLN 170 ‑ 300. Reimbursed imaging examinations of the jaw are sometimes performed in hospitals and maxillofacial surgery clinics, but only with a doctor’s referral and as part of treatment, not as a standalone examination before an implant. It is best to ask your doctor or an NFZ branch what is covered in your particular case.
A panoramic X-ray is easier to obtain through NFZ: adults can have one every five years, but only during root canal treatment or before prosthodontic treatment.
How long does a dental CT scan take and how should you prepare?
A dental CT scan is quick: the scan itself takes several seconds, while the entire appointment usually lasts 10 to 15 minutes. The patient stands or sits, bites down on a special bite block, and the scanner arm rotates around their head.
Preparation is straightforward:
- remove earrings, glasses, hair clips, necklaces and removable dentures, as metal interferes with the image,
- bring the referral or a note from your dentist specifying the scan area (tooth, one arch or both arches),
- tell the technician if you are pregnant or may be pregnant; the doctor will decide whether the examination is currently necessary,
- ask how you will receive the results: on a disc, USB drive or via a download link.
How can you avoid overpaying for a dental CT scan?
A dental CT scan costs least when the scan area is matched to the clinical need. A common mistake is ordering a scan of both arches when the dentist needs an image of just one tooth, or the reverse: having a small area scanned and then repeating the examination because it did not include the planned implant site.
- Ask your dentist about the scan area, preferably in writing. The difference between a small-area scan and a full scan may equal or exceed the price of a panoramic X-ray.
- Compare prices with and without a report. If you are being treated by a surgeon or implant dentist, they will often review the images themselves, so a paid report may be unnecessary. Ask them in advance.
- Check whether the clinic includes CBCT in a package. For implants, some clinics add the CT scan to the treatment plan, while others offer a discount when the scan is performed on site.
- Keep the disc containing the scan. A recent scan can be used by another dentist if you change clinics, saving you from having to repeat it.
Is dental CT more expensive in large cities?
In our data, dental CT prices are similar across the country, and we do not yet have separate medians for cities such as Wrocław or Radom. In the price lists we collected, the scan area and whether a report is included make a greater difference than the location itself. If you are looking for a scan in your city, compare two or three imaging centres and measure their prices against the median of PLN 235.
When comparing offers, look at the median rather than the lowest advertised price: ‘from PLN 150’ usually applies to the smallest scan area.
