Surgical extraction, for example of an impacted tooth, costs around PLN 775, while wisdom tooth removal usually costs PLN 625 ‑ 850. Tooth extraction is free at a dental practice with an NFZ contract.

The price of a tooth extraction can vary severalfold: a simple extraction of a front tooth is very different from the surgical removal of an impacted wisdom tooth involving bone removal. How much does private tooth extraction cost?

According to 4 price lists collected by indekscen.pl, private tooth extraction most often costs PLN 365, while half of dental practices charge within the range of PLN 325 ‑ 415. This refers to a simple extraction of a permanent tooth under local anaesthetic. The cheapest practices charge from PLN 300, while the most expensive simple extractions cost up to PLN 450.

How much does a dentist charge for tooth extraction and what affects the price?

A dentist usually charges PLN 325 ‑ 415 for tooth extraction if the tooth is visible in the mouth and has straight roots. The price rises with the difficulty of the procedure. The most important factors are:

1. Type of extraction. A simple extraction using forceps is cheaper than surgery involving a gum incision.
2. Position and roots. Molars have several roots, while curved roots make the procedure take longer.
3. Condition of the tooth. A severely damaged crown may break, requiring the roots to be separated or bone to be removed.
4. City and dental practice. Clinics in large cities and oral surgery practices charge higher rates.
5. Extras. Follow-up appointments, medication, X-rays and sedation may be charged separately.

Do you have to pay for tooth extraction through the NFZ?

Tooth extraction through the NFZ is free for insured patients if the procedure is performed by a dental practice with a contract with the National Health Fund. Under the NFZ, dentists extract teeth under local anaesthetic and usually refer more difficult procedures, such as impacted teeth, to an oral surgery clinic.

The drawback is the waiting time. In many cities, patients wait longer for an NFZ appointment, while time matters when a tooth is painful. This is why many people choose to pay PLN 365 privately. Funding rules may change, so confirm the scope of covered services with your chosen practice.

How much does surgical wisdom tooth removal cost?

According to 3 price lists, private wisdom tooth removal most often costs PLN 800, typically PLN 625 ‑ 850. Surgical removal of an impacted wisdom tooth, particularly a lower one, can cost up to PLN 1,200. An erupted upper wisdom tooth may cost less, from PLN 400.

Why is wisdom tooth removal expensive? Wisdom teeth often have insufficient space in the dental arch, grow at an angle or are partly embedded in the bone. The dentist must then make an incision in the gum, expose the tooth and sometimes divide it into sections before removing it piece by piece. Can you have a wisdom tooth removed through the NFZ?

Wisdom tooth removal through the NFZ is available free of charge if the procedure is performed by a dental practice or oral surgery clinic with an NFZ contract. An erupted wisdom tooth is often removed by a general dentist, while an impacted tooth or one embedded in the bone is usually removed by a surgeon, who normally requires a referral from a dentist.

For a wisdom tooth that is not painful but needs to be removed, for example before orthodontic treatment, using the NFZ is a reasonable option if the available appointment fits your treatment plan.

How much does tooth extraction under general anaesthetic cost?

According to the limited number of available price lists, tooth extraction under general anaesthetic costs around PLN 540 per tooth, but some facilities charge according to the duration of the anaesthetic: around 2,000 PLN/hour. When several teeth are removed at once, an hourly charge may be better value.

Standard local anaesthetic is usually included in the price of a routine extraction. General anaesthetic is used for severe anxiety, extensive procedures or patients who are unable to cooperate with the dentist. A doctor decides whether it is appropriate following a consultation.

Which days are the worst after tooth extraction?

The first 2 to 3 days after tooth extraction are usually the worst: swelling and pain are at their most severe, particularly after surgery. The discomfort should then begin to ease. If the pain gets worse after several days or you develop an unpleasant smell or fever, contact your dentist, as this may indicate a healing complication known as dry socket.

Your dentist will give you instructions to follow after the procedure. These usually include:

• do not eat or drink hot beverages for around 2 hours,
• do not rinse your mouth vigorously during the first 24 hours, as this could dislodge the blood clot,
• do not smoke or drink through a straw for several days,
• apply a cold compress if swelling occurs.

Your dentist will select suitable painkillers and prescribe an antibiotic if necessary. Do not take antibiotics without medical advice.

What comes after tooth extraction: how much does replacing the missing tooth cost?

After a side or front tooth has been extracted, it is worth planning to replace it because neighbouring teeth gradually tilt into the gap. The most durable solution is an implant: the implant itself costs around PLN 3,350, while the complete procedure including the crown costs around PLN 7,500. A bridge or denture is a cheaper alternative.

How can you avoid overpaying for tooth extraction?

• Ask whether the price is for a simple or surgical extraction. The difference is roughly PLN 365 compared with PLN 775.
• Check what the price includes. Anaesthetic, stitches, a follow-up appointment and an X-ray may be charged separately.
• For wisdom teeth, ask for an assessment based on an X-ray. A panoramic dental X-ray costing around PLN 100 makes it possible to price the procedure before it begins.
• Consider the NFZ if the tooth is not painful. A planned extraction of a tooth that is not causing pain can usually be arranged at a dental practice with an NFZ contract.
