Vehicle deregistration may bring to mind a visit to the vehicle registration office, a queue and piles of paperwork. In practice, it is one of the cheapest administrative procedures, and following the change in regulations in June 2026, you often do not need to do anything when scrapping a vehicle. Most misunderstandings concern vehicle sales, as deregistration is often confused with reporting a sale. We explain how much it costs, what to do in each situation and what the deadlines are.
How much does it cost to deregister a vehicle?
Deregistering a vehicle at the owner’s request costs PLN 10 in stamp duty for issuing an administrative decision. Vehicle deregistration after scrapping: what changed on 30 June 2026?
From 30 June 2026, a vehicle delivered to a dismantling facility is deregistered automatically, without an application from the owner. The dismantling facility electronically submits information about accepting the vehicle to the central vehicle register, and the county authority deregisters it on this basis. Previously, the owner had to submit an application to the authority within 30 days of dismantling.
How vehicle scrapping works step by step:
- Choose an authorised dismantling facility or vehicle collection point. Only an authorised operator can issue a certificate of dismantling.
- Deliver the vehicle with its registration certificate and number plates. The facility accepts the documents and plates.
- Collect the vehicle dismantling certificate and keep it, as it will be useful when settling your third-party liability insurance policy.
- Check the vehicle’s status after a few days, for example in the mObywatel app or at the vehicle registration office. You can still apply for deregistration yourself if you prefer to have the decision in hand.
Scrapping itself is usually free for the owner. An authorised facility will often pay for the vehicle, on average around PLN 450, with the amount depending mainly on the vehicle’s weight and completeness.
Which comes first: scrapping or deregistration?
Scrapping comes first, followed by deregistration. Deregistration is based on the vehicle dismantling certificate or information submitted by the dismantling facility to the register, so the authority cannot deregister the vehicle until it has been delivered to the facility. Do not remove the number plates or discard the registration certificate beforehand: the facility accepts them with the vehicle. Do not take the vehicle to an unauthorised scrap dealer either, as it cannot issue a certificate and the vehicle will remain registered in your name.
How long do I have to deregister a vehicle after scrapping?
For dismantling carried out after 30 June 2026, the owner no longer has a deadline for submitting an application, because the authority deregisters the vehicle using data from the facility. If the vehicle was delivered to a facility before that date, the application had to be submitted within 30 days of dismantling. Anyone who missed the deadline for an earlier scrapping and whose vehicle is still listed in the register should contact the vehicle registration office with the dismantling certificate as soon as possible.
An application to deregister a vehicle after scrapping is submitted to the county authority responsible for the owner’s place of residence, in person, by post or online through gov.pl using a trusted profile. The fee for deregistering a scrapped vehicle on request is PLN 10. Ask your vehicle registration office to confirm whether a fee is charged when the authority deregisters the vehicle automatically.
Do you deregister a vehicle after selling it?
A vehicle sold in Poland is not deregistered. The seller reports the sale to the vehicle registration office within 30 days, and the buyer re-registers the vehicle in their name within the same period. Reporting the sale is free, while the buyer pays from PLN 66.50 for re-registration without changing the number plates. Read more about these costs in our article on re-registering a vehicle without changing the number plates.
Deregistration after a sale applies only to a vehicle sold abroad. In this case, the owner submits an application with a document confirming the sale abroad, the registration certificate and the number plates, and pays PLN 10 in stamp duty.
What is the difference between reporting a vehicle sale and deregistration?
Reporting a vehicle sale informs the authority that the vehicle has a new owner, while deregistration removes the vehicle from the register because it is no longer used on Polish roads. After the sale is reported, the vehicle remains registered, but in the new owner’s name. Once deregistered, the vehicle no longer has a registration number and cannot legally be driven on a public road.
| Situation | What you do | Official fee |
|---|---|---|
| Sale of a vehicle in Poland | report the sale within 30 days | no fee |
| Sale of a vehicle abroad | apply for deregistration | PLN 10 |
| Scrapping after 30.06.2026 | nothing, the authority deregisters it automatically | no application required |
| Vehicle theft | apply with a police certificate | PLN 10 |
What is the penalty for failing to report the sale of a vehicle?
If a vehicle sale is not reported within 30 days, the county authority may impose an administrative penalty amounting to several hundred PLN. This is a penalty, not a service fee, so we do not include it in the price index. The penalty applies to failure to report the sale, not failure to deregister the vehicle, because a vehicle sold in Poland is not deregistered. You can report the sale online through gov.pl, so it is easiest to do so on the day of the sale.
If you have received a penalty and have proof that you reported the sale on time, such as confirmation from gov.pl or a stamp on the application, keep it. For advice on appealing the penalty, it is best to consult a lawyer or an official at the vehicle registration office.
What happens to third-party liability insurance after vehicle deregistration?
The third-party liability insurance contract ends when the vehicle is deregistered, and the insurer refunds part of the premium for the unused period. After scrapping, it is worth sending the insurer a copy of the dismantling certificate and requesting a refund. After a sale, the third-party liability insurance policy passes to the buyer, who may cancel it. We explain how to compare third-party liability insurance offers for your next vehicle in our article on the cheapest third-party liability car insurance.
Online vehicle deregistration: how does it work?
You can deregister a vehicle online through the service on gov.pl after signing in with a trusted profile, e‑ID card or online banking. You attach scans of the documents and confirmation that the PLN 10 stamp duty has been paid into the city or municipality’s bank account. However, the number plates and registration certificate must still be surrendered in person, unless they have already been left at the dismantling facility.
